Rubrik & Oracle: Not Just a Dumb Target

Oracle databases are a critical part of many IT environments. With the Rubrik Alta release, we are excited to announce support for Oracle. Our goal is to provide core Rubrik benefits such as immutability and a single policy engine for retention + archival + replication, while tightly integrating with native Oracle capabilities. Our approach is to integrate with RMAN to offer agentless support and allow Oracle DBAs to continue using familiar tools. The integration provides support for ASM – a notable difference from array-based snapshot methods. Rubrik supports all database topologies (RAC, Exadata, etc.) and recovery types. While an easy and technically feasible approach would have been providing an NFS export and stopping there, Rubrik is intentionally not a “dumb target” for database backups. Our engineers rejected that approach as not staying true to the core Rubrik platform benefits. However, we are using NFS as a transport mechanism for ingesting RMAN backups into Oracle. From there, Oracle backups are preserved in an immutable format and managed via the same Rubrik policy that applies to all other datasets. Under the Hood The core new feature that supports Oracle backups is the concept of a Managed Volume – an NFS mount point exposed to…

The Untold Origin Story of World Backup Day

On March 31st, we join our industry colleagues in celebrating and promoting World Backup Day. After all, friends don’t let friends go without backups. But…have you ever heard the tragic story of how World Backup Day came to be? Although it was thought to be lost in the mists of time and reddit, origin stories aren’t just for superheroes. It was back in the late 2000’s – a time when virtual machines were breeding out of control, budgets were beginning to shrink, and backup administrators were slowly drowning in increasing waves of data growth and virtualization sprawl. Imagine–if you will–our protagonist in his office, slumped in his knock-off Aeron chair. The lights are off, and the luminous glow of his food-chained CRT is casting his face in stark relief. A foreboding backup console has his full attention; he has left the failed complexity of his primary backup server interface and is now scouring individual server backups. His office door opens. Our hero flinches but doesn’t turn around. “If we can’t recover the payroll backups, our heads will roll. It’ll be the last excuse our CIO needs to sign the wholesale outsourcing contract with IBM. His golf buddy was pitching it on…

The Accelerating World of Ransomware

Have you been hearing more about ransomware recently? It seems like every day there’s another news headline, vendor presentation, or story about data held ransom. So, what’s driving this “buzz”? Is it just a media-created frenzy, or are there actual changes in the ransomware landscape? Ransomware: A Maturing Landscape Per ZDNet, the cost of ransomware attacks rose from $25M in 2015 to $1B in 2016–an incredible rate of growth. The landscape is evolving into a structure similar to the IT market; there are ransomware vendors, “channel partners” or providers, and (of course) customers. Ransomware vendors now sell “kits” to aspiring hackers that offer various degrees of customization, encryption types, and technical skill required to use. This is a thriving industry, as exemplified by the barrage of stories on organizations such as public transportation services, school districts, and hospital after hospital. Customer Service from Ransomware Once your files are encrypted by ransomware, you are their customer–albeit a very unwilling one. In a darkly ironic twist, ransomware providers are ramping up their customer service efforts to give technical support on using Bitcoin and other related tasks. In some cases, the hacker even pays a percentage of ransoms back to the vendor. This new sector reveals a maturing marketplace with continuing investment that will…

The Interesting Challenge of Backing Up NAS

Rubrik is pleased to announce support for Network Attached Storage (NAS) backups such as NetApp and Isilon with our 3.0 Firefly release. Given that NAS support is one of the most common customer requests in 2016, we are offering an innovative solution for managing NAS data that provides faster Recovery Point & Recovery Time Objectives (RPO & RTO), incremental-forever backups, and cloud archive capabilities. We’re delivering these capabilities without sacrificing storage efficiency or tying the customer to a complex NDMP-based (Network Data Management Protocol) solution. What makes NAS backups so difficult? Two characteristics make NAS backups difficult:  Agents – It is impossible to install an agent since NAS is sold as an appliance.  Dataset Size – NAS systems and datasets have grown in size with the industry. When NDMP was first introduced, a very large NAS dataset might have been 10 TB. Today, NAS datasets typically tend to be huge, running into 100s of TBs or PBs. For these reasons, traditional backup vendors using ancient approaches like NDMP have failed to keep pace in providing fast, incremental-forever backups with efficient storage usage and short RTOs. What are the advantages and differentiators of our NAS approach? Vendor Agnostic – Our approach works with all…

Accelerating Our Automation Focus

If you follow Rubrik, it’s hard to miss that we’re focused on enabling automation in the datacenter. We built an API into Rubrik from the very beginning and frequently talk about automation — whether in blog posts, customer discussions, or presentations. As 2017 begins, we plan to expand this focus. Our goal is to give back and help the IT community by showing users what can be done with the Rubrik API and automation. We’ll even have some product announcements around API support! Automation Is the Future of the Modern Datacenter Simply put, we believe that the IT world is heading towards automation. If you’d like an intro on this topic, this post entitled “Over $500M invested in API companies in 2016, with 16 acquisitions” is a great primer. Today’s IT environments are becoming increasingly more complex. In some cases, companies such as Rubrik do a lot of hard work under the covers to abstract that complexity underneath policy-driven architectures. A lot of work and decision-making goes into turning a large amount of architecture + development, as pictured above, into simple policies. However, customers will always need additional capabilities and the ability to link multiple products together. These needs may be satisfied via…

Isolated Recovery & Ransomware: Cost vs. Value

Has a vendor been talking to you about Isolated Recovery recently? Or have you been thinking about duplicating and air gapping your backup systems with scheduled updates to protect against ransomware? Could there be a less expensive, less complex way to achieve similar benefits? Let’s dive into these ideas to explore the concept and limitations of Isolated Recovery–and where Rubrik can help. What is Isolated Recovery? From a network perspective, the concept of air gapping isn’t new. Simply put, there’s physical isolation between two networks – most commonly a secured and an unsecured network. While Isolated Recovery shares this “physical isolation” characteristic, it is built on the concept of having a separate data center infrastructure that is disconnected from the primary infrastructure via an air gap. In the case of Isolated Recovery, the air gap is closed on a regular schedule for replication updates. Think of this as being similar to the operational overhead of a DR infrastructure. In theory, if your files are encrypted by ransomware, there is complete surety that your air-gapped data isn’t affected and is available for restore. Is there a real benefit? You might already be thinking about update schedules. What if the ransomware isn’t detected…
