In the Eye of the Beholder: Rubrik Alta 4.2

In any new release, there are the major features–the items you mention when asked for a 30-second version of “what’s new.” Rubrik Alta 4.2 is no exception, and we’ve talked a lot about the high-level themes and larger features. Perhaps it’s my IT Operations background, but while I get excited about the banner features, I also find the “smaller” items fascinating. I still remember reading release notes as a customer and seeing a feature or feature improvement that, while minor to many, was hugely impactful and an indication of development maturity. If developer cycles aren’t also put towards improvement to existing features or “minor additions,” that’s not healthy and is especially challenging for current customers. Given that, I’d like to take a few minutes to focus on a few less notable, but still important, 4.2 features. Let’s call them “In the Eye of the Beholder” features. Edge on AHV & Hyper-V I’ve spent a lot of time with customers who have extensive Remote Office / Branch Office (ROBO) architectures. Backup and recovery in these environments can be painful–lack of physical space, tape rotation, budget challenges, performance, and more. While Rubrik in the data center traditionally has a 3 or 4 node minimum,…

NAS Recovery for the Cloud Era

At Rubrik, we have architected our product for enterprise scale. Our typical NAS customer has at least a few hundred TBs, up to many PBs, of NAS in their environment.  Backing up this large of an environment while ensuring SLA compliance is a huge challenge for them, as it requires a platform that is highly parallelized, vendor-agnostic, and policy-based. With our customers’ pain points at the forefront of our minds, we have built an innovative solution to managing NAS. A Modern Approach to Backing Up NAS We’re focused on developing a solution that delivers both simplicity and high performance, even in large-scale environments. For enterprise customers with NAS systems, our approach delivers four key benefits: Cost-effectiveness: Just like Rubrik is disrupting the overall backup and recovery industry, we’re developing a truly innovative way of protecting today’s enterprise environments. We take a cloud-first approach to our NAS solution so that users can enjoy the flexibility and cost-efficiency of the cloud. Not only do we provide our customers with the ability to archive to on-prem targets such as NFS and object stores, but we also allow users to store files of both structured data (like documents or spreadsheets) and unstructured data (like PDFs…

Cloudy Explorations at Cloud Field Day 3

As Chris Wahl wrote previously… It’s not often that I get to present to a room full of amazingly talented colleagues gathered from all around the world. But when I do, it’s typically during one of Gestalt IT’s Field Day presentations. While Rubrik has presented 5 times at Tech Field Day Events, presenting at Cloud Field Day 3 was particularly special. For the first time, we were able to host the delegates at our groovy HQ in Palo Alto. The tree outside turned out to be a great location for the Cloud Field Day 3 group photo. BUT…before the Rubrik presentations, we loved watching a brand new company launch from stealth – Droplet Computing. It brought a tear to our eyes as we remembered how we ended our own stealthy ways not even three short years ago. Chris Wahl kicked off our sessions with an introduction to Rubrik, our vision for the future, and recent announcements, including Rubrik Datos IO and the new Polaris SaaS platform. His intro helped set the stage for the upcoming presentations, which was appreciated by Tim Crawford and Scott D. Lowe. Next, we moved into a deep dive and demo of CloudOut, our long-term retention technology…

Intro to Rubrik Datos IO 2.5: Your Primer on Our Newest Product

At Rubrik, we believe Rubrik Datos IO has come along at a perfect time. As more organizations choose NoSQL databases to rapidly build their modern applications, they also struggle with ensuring these applications are protected. Rubrik Datos IO was built to tackle this problem head on. We recognize that many of you are interested in learning more about Rubrik Datos IO for NoSQL and distributed databases, and we recently held a webinar to discuss our product – and our customers – in greater detail. Here’s a quick rundown of what we covered in the webinar, which is available to watch on-demand here. The background: why NoSQL databases need data protection Enterprises are increasingly investing in NoSQL and cloud-native infrastructure. As with most big trends in technology, there are many factors behind this: these platforms take advantage of distributed commodity hardware, are designed with today’s unstructured data in mind, and are easier to configure as highly available. Today, applications built on NoSQL databases like MongoDB and Apache Cassandra / Datastax are at the center of many Fortune 500 companies’ operations. Companies that selected these products to help their application developers build faster 10 years ago now have many critical applications at…

Design Centers and You

A Bit of History I still find technology fascinating – don’t you? There’s a certain joy in tinkering, building, and ultimately creating that never gets old. This goes back to my earliest days when I used ResEdit to change the Welcome to Macintosh screen to say Be very, very afraid, but it remained true after graduating from college and diving headfirst into learning Novell Netware and eDirectory. For those of us with a CNA, it never actually expires and doesn’t technically have to be removed from your resume. I’ll let you decide if it stays or not though. Over time, part of my responsibilities both as a data center architect at a customer and then later as a presales technical director at a solutions integrator involved input on new product evaluations. I had to determine how the various products would or wouldn’t fit into my data center or our solutions portfolio. There are many facets to these kind of evaluations, so it can be daunting to keep track of the mountains of minutia – everything from technical to operational to financial and more. What’s a Design Center? In time, one idea that I came to focus on was a concept…

CarePoint Health Simplifies Operations with Rubrik and Microsoft Azure

Headquartered in Jersey City, New Jersey, CarePoint Health is a leader in the delivery of preventive medicine, healthcare education, and disease management. Each year, CarePoint Health delivers hundreds of thousands of healthcare services to residents in Hudson County through its three area hospitals. Lev Goronshteyn, CTO at CarePoint Health, discusses how Rubrik and Microsoft Azure simplified CarePoint’s data management operations and helped them eliminate tape. What challenges were you experiencing with data protection? When we combined the three hospital IT environments, it created a lot of complexity and performance challenges for us. Our old system was inherently difficult to use, our backups were taking 12 hours or longer to complete, and our restores could take hours. We were spending a lot of time on backups, and we wanted to free our employees up to work on other initiatives. We also were sitting on a vast amount of tape, which was challenging to manage and needed to be eliminated. Why did you choose Rubrik and Microsoft Azure? We knew that by transitioning to a hybrid cloud we could unlock cost savings and efficiency gains that weren’t possible with our legacy systems. To get the results we wanted, we knew that we needed…

Built for Government: Rubrik Achieves DODIN APL Certification

Today, I’m thrilled to announce that Rubrik has become the first Cloud Data Management platform to be certified by the U.S. Department of Defense Information Network Approved Products List (DODIN APL). This certification, which placed us under the CyberSecurity Tools category, reflects Rubrik’s commitment to building a secure, next-generation platform for government agencies. As the only backup and recovery solution on the Approved Products List, we are excited by the opportunity to further support defense agencies in modernizing their infrastructure and on-ramping to the cloud. The DODIN APL provides a consolidated list of products that are approved for purchase after rigorous evaluation. DOD components are required to fulfill their system needs only through APL listed products, meaning that the APL must be consulted prior to purchasing a system or product. By meeting the strict security standards, Rubrik’s solutions can immediately be used within existing government networks and streamlines the purchase process for customers. In alignment with this certification, Rubrik’s technology also supports compliance with the Data Center Optimization Initiative (DCOI) and Modernizing Government Technology Act (MGT) mandates. These require agencies to improve their infrastructure to be more efficient, secure, resilient, and cost-effective, particularly through increased cloud adoption. The mandates provide…

Worried About Viruses? Ransom? Data Loss? The Cure is Here!

This is not hype! This is reality. Companies across industries get hit with viruses all the time. In the always-on economy, companies rely on 24/7 data availability, so any downtime can severely impact the business. The good news is that with a strong data management solution, you can quickly recover from a disaster without any data loss. Before we dive into how Rubrik delivers that solution, let’s go over what happens during a virus attack. The Lifecycle of a Virus Attack Before Rubrik As the above diagram shows, a typical attack has several phases: you get hit with the virus, your systems are under attack, and your business loses access to the encrypted data. Once it’s detected, your IT team documents and implements steps to prevent the virus from spreading. But since most organizations rely on data to perform daily operations, the data loss you’ve already experienced has a severe impact on the organization. Unfortunately, for many organizations, a virus’ life doesn’t end with patching the vulnerability. Even with a sophisticated antivirus software, viruses can remain in your system undetected. This often leads to further data corruption and a vicious cycle of attack, recover, and patch. For this reason, many…

Chapters Health System Chooses Rubrik to Combat Ransomware and Manage Nutanix AHV Environment

Headquartered in Temple Terrace, Florida, Chapters Health System is a principal provider of care for persons affected by advanced and life-limiting illnesses. As one of the country’s first post-acute care systems, Chapters Health is a progressive leader in the delivery of hospice, palliative care, and home health services. Each year, Chapters Health delivers hundreds of thousands of healthcare services across eight counties in West Central Florida through its inpatient and outpatient locations. Chris Williams, Director of IT Operations at Chapters Health, and Mike Parkin, Director of IT Security, discuss how Rubrik protects against the threat of Ransomware and empowers their multi-hypervisor strategy. What challenges were you experiencing with data protection? CW: We were concerned with the growing threat of Ransomware, particularly given the prevalence of attacks targeting hospitals and healthcare systems. The previous solution also failed to provide adequate visibility, which resulted in us needing to physically call the vendor to check the status of a backup. Conducting maintenance was a pain, too. Every new software update would result in issues with our agents or logs not being truncated. MP: We wanted to implement Nutanix AHV, which, with our previous vendor, would have forced us to purchase additional hardware and…
