What led you to Rubrik? rediBackup is our Backup-as-a-Service offering in the making. We had selected a backup software vendor, one which is fairly common in the managed service provider space and which our engineering team was fairly acquainted with already. However, we recognized…

“Strawberry Fields Forever” with Rubrik

Nathan Bach, Senior Systems Engineer, and Jose Ambrosio, Systems Engineer, explain how Rubrik helped Driscoll’s overcome recovery challenges stemming from array-based snapshots. Tell me about yourself and role. How did you get here? Nate: Prior to Driscoll’s, I was a solution architect at a tech reseller helping SMB to enterprise customers implement solutions from VMware and HP. Driscoll’s was actually one of my customers. Driscoll’s gave me an opportunity to come in and start implementing virtualization. Today, we’re 95% virtualized. Jose: I started out picking blackberries in the field as a teen, and was invited to work for Driscoll’s. I interned in different functions—quality, research, IT. I went back to school with the purpose of coming back to Driscoll’s as a systems administrator. Why were you investigating new backup solutions? Nate: Array-based snapshots was our backup strategy. Our primary storage vendor’s vision was to buy more arrays, mirror and replicate to more storage arrays. Doing so became expensive since backups quickly consumed our production capacity, and this limited our retention policies. We ran the risk of having our backups located in the same site as our primary storage. Managing this was incredibly difficult given the lack of file granularity. Locating…

How Red Hawk Eliminated Tape for Good

Jake Warren, Systems Administrator at Red Hawk Casino, shares how he finally eliminated tape and started using public cloud (Amazon Web Services) as a cost-effective long-term data retention resource with Rubrik. What led you to Red Hawk? I’ve been building computers and networks since I was in high school so working in IT was a natural career choice. I honed my IT chops working as a desktop technician for a medical company during my college years and then worked my way up over the next 20 years from being a network admin to designing and implementing new technologies at casinos. When Red Hawk opened its doors in 2008, I left home (Michigan) to help build the IT environment and team from scratch at the Northern California-based casino. What makes running IT at a casino unique? Like most places today, IT is chartered with keeping the business running 24/7. Within a casino, that means ensuring guests can play slots, poker, whatever they want at any time they want. A casino environment is unique since there is a significantly larger number and greater variety of systems that each admin needs to manage. At Red Hawk, we have two sys admins managing close…

Building a Managed Service Business with Rubrik

Mike Leone, Sr. Network Engineer at Protected Trust, talks about building a reliable, secure managed service business with Rubrik (and the single bane of his existence). Tell me about what you do at Protected Trust. I’ve been at Protected Trust for the last 6 years. As a network engineer and system architect, I wear multiple hats, dealing with networks, servers, and systems. Protected Trust started out as an Exchange hosting company for high-security level clients and over the years has evolved into a full-service managed services shop (simple email encryption, Exchange hosting, secure cloud, and disaster recovery). Our job is to not only make IT easy for our users, but also make IT secure. Our clients don’t need to see the data center unless they want to. What led you to Rubrik? Protected Trust offers backups as part of its DR-as-a-Service offering. It’s been a challenge trying to find an effective solution to execute on our vision of protecting the full data lifecycle in a secure and reliable fashion. After data creation by our clients, it’s our job to process, archive, and dispose of it properly. We’ve tried multiple backup solutions and found them to be fairly complicated. As you…

The Future is Inside This Box

Searching for files in seconds, validating backup jobs, and more importantly, taking vacation. Jaime Huizar, Senior Architect at Power Integrations, talks about the benefits of adopting Rubrik early on. How did you become an Infrastructure Architect? I’ve always loved technology and tinkering with things. As a kid, I was fascinated by computers – taking them apart, putting them back together. Working in IT was a natural path to do what I love: test-driving and using the latest technologies. I’ve been in the business for 20 years. What does Power Integrations do? We’re a semiconductor manufacturing company that specializes in conversion from AC to DC, and vice versa. We can be found anywhere from a cell phone charger to a locomotive to a windmill. Tell me more about how your team supports Power Integrations? Our charter is to keep operations running 24/7 around the world. Any PI (Power Integrations) employee needs to be able to access information any time of the day globally. For us, that means keeping a pulse on the latest technology trends. For example, we were an early adopter of virtualization and started using VMware in 2007. Any technology that can give our business a competitive advantage and…
