0-60 in 1.9 Seconds: Rubrik Goes “Plaid” with Microsoft Azure

Today, just months after the Rubrik Alta 4.1 release, we’re excited to announce that Rubrik has been designated an ISV co-seller through the Microsoft Partner Network to offer our hybrid cloud management solution on Microsoft Azure. Expanding our partnership with Microsoft enables enterprise, government, and nonprofit customers to transform their organizations and fully leverage a hybrid cloud model. Rubrik’s unprecedented growth and the breadth of its development mirrors some of the most innovative companies to date. As I was finalizing the content of this joint announcement, my son texted me: Tesla released a roadster, and it’s exactly everything you could ever want from a car. Welcome to “Plaid Mode.” To me, our extended partnership with Microsoft is Rubrik’s Plaid Mode. In a mere few months, Rubrik has gone from being a small partner to being a top MS ISV. We began our Azure journey earlier this year. The initial step was to target new features for Azure  to bring us into a leadership position among cloud providers. Our engineers delivered at lightspeed with the release of Rubrik Alta 4.1. The release expanded our CloudOn services to Microsoft Azure, pioneering server-less conversion of VMs to cloud instances. This lowers the costs…
Rubrik - - For CIOs, Focus on the Service Experience is Paramount

For CIOs, Focus on the Service Experience is Paramount

Four years ago, I sat down with Frank Slootman, now Former CEO of ServiceNow and Data Domain, and shared my idea of re-architecting backup and recovery from the ground up to manage the data explosion in a cloudy world. Backup and recovery was overdue for a technology refresh. There was opportunity to bring the power of public clouds to backup, expand the role of backup data into a business asset for test/dev and analytics, and replace the traditional cumbersome architecture and user experience with one that was radically simple and infinitely scalable. Fast forward to ten product releases and 600+ employees, Frank and I caught up on why he invested in Rubrik and how our vision resonated with him. During the discussion, we traded notes on where IT is headed and what’s top of mind for CIOs. Four out of the five business days, I’m usually found on the road, meeting with customers around the world across all industries. After countless trips, I have noticed a clear trend in my discussions with CIOs – the CIO of today is starkly different from the CIO of yesterday. They are business strategists and spend their time figuring how best to leverage technology…
Rubrik - - The Startup Funding Journey

The Startup Funding Journey

Eric Shanks recently wrote a fascinating article analyzing startup funding using Rubrik as an example. If you haven’t already, go read it now – I’ll wait here until you come back. I’ve always loved figuring out how things work, whether it’s exploring SimCity, learning Netware out of college, understanding channel reseller business models, and now IT startups. However, as Eric Shanks explored, fascination with technology often expands into understanding all the factors surrounding its creation. As we all know, the best technology doesn’t always win. Let’s have a moment of silence for OS/2, Betamax, Novell Netware + eDirectory, and many more. For startups, one major factor is funding, which I’d like to share a few thoughts on. Please note this is my own personal perspective built over the last 15+ years. All About the People Before Round A, it’s more about the people than the product. There’s typically not much of a product at this point, so the main thing to gauge is the team. Looking at Rubrik, all four co-founders, as well as the founding engineers, could literally work almost anywhere they wanted in Silicon Valley. In the past, they’d held positions at Oracle, Facebook, VMware, Google, and more. And…

Top 3 Mistakes to Avoid When Automating Your Business

Businesses worldwide are leveraging automation to deliver services at a lower cost with a higher level of customer satisfaction. The return on investment for automation is well documented, both in financial benefit and higher customer retention rates. But not all efforts to implement automation are created equal, and many companies stumble to meet their goal. Integrating automation into a business requires planning and strategy. This post walks through the top pitfalls to avoid when implementing automation. Recreating the Workflow The first mistake many businesses make is automating the steps of an existing workflow. This may seem like a shortcut since the workflow provides a blueprint for the steps needed to achieve the end result. But workflows created around manual processes focus more on previously performed tasks than on the entire problem. I experienced this firsthand while developing a process to automate billing based on cloud usage. The existing workflow had many steps that required manually altering the output of the previous step and reformatting it before sending it to the next person in the chain. This process created a significant margin of error, as even minor changes caused the entire chain to break. This leads to our next major pitfall.…

Rubrik Raises $180 Million at $1.3 Billion – Why it Matters

This past week, we announced that we raised $180 million at a $1.3 billion valuation. The round is led by IVP (same folks who invested in Slack, Snapchat, AppDynamics, MuleSoft) with strong participation from our existing investors Lightspeed Venture Partners and Greylock Partners. Why raise another round? We have not even dipped into the $61 million from Series C since we’ve been judiciously fueling our hyper-growth with cash flow. Simply put, Rubrik is growing extremely fast. We’ve grown our employees by more than 15x in the past two years. We’ve expanded to 5 continents in 5 quarters. We approached $100 million in bookings in just six quarters of selling. We’ve amassed a customer base numbering into several hundred enterprises, with huge penetration into the Fortune 500 and large governments. When several investors approached us to pre-empt the next round of funding, my co-founders and I saw the opportunity to double down on accelerating our business at a rate that the industry has not seen before. The market demand is there and we can further amplify our innovation lead by investing heavily in R&D. To date, we have rolled out 8 product releases with the latest managing data for cloud-native applications while…
Rubrik - - Heartbroken by vSphere Data Protection?

Heartbroken by vSphere Data Protection?

Has the end of VMware’s vSphere Data Protection left you spurned? Getting dumped hurts. So, take your time and play the field. Just know that when you are ready to move on to a more serious relationship, Rubrik is ready for you. To add insult to injury, VMware is offering three years of Avamar Virtual Edition licensing for free. . .as long as you have less than 4 TB; otherwise, you have to pay. And, regardless of how much data you need to protect, you must continue to pay maintenance costs. Ouch! What is this – alimony? Love really can hurt. But it doesn’t have to! There are no limits to Rubrik’s love.  Have more than 4 TB of protected data? No worries! Rubrik uses a linear scale-out approach to solve data growth concerns. Simply add more briks to accommodate your company’s data growth. VMware will continue to focus on the vSphere Storage APIs – Data Protection (VADP), which Rubrik leverages to backup your virtual machines. This is great news, but your company may not use 100% VMware virtual machines. Fear not–we’re diversifying our portfolio by providing support for physical Windows and Linux servers, as well as Microsoft SQL databases. Speaking…
Rubrik - - 3 Cloud Data Management Trends You’ll See in 2017

3 Cloud Data Management Trends You’ll See in 2017

Data collection and analysis have become crucial for reaching business goals across industries. As the role of data has transformed, so has the way in which it is stored, protected, and managed. Growing use of the cloud, both private and public, has led to a marriage of hardware and software that provides cost-effective, simplified solutions. With no signs of slowing down, industry leaders and startups are spearheading innovation in the cloud data management space. Here are the top trends to watch for in 2017: 1. The Democratization of Data The amount of data that companies collect has never been higher, and cloud computing makes it more readily available to employees. Data that was once reserved for top directors is now imperative for lower-level workers to make smart business decisions. Democratization of data describes exactly this—providing employees access to relevant data. However, there are challenges to this newfound openness. In order for data to be delivered securely and efficiently, IT departments must be able to easily control who can and cannot access specific data sets. Another challenge is that as data usage increases, so does the amount of data in the environment due to actions such as dataset cloning. To simplify cloud data democracy…
Rubrik - -  Creating a Transformational Shift with Cloud Data Management

Creating a Transformational Shift with Cloud Data Management

Today, I’m excited to announce KV’s investment in Rubrik, a company that will transform how enterprises recover, manage, and secure all their data across private and public clouds. Rubrik is a company with an immense market that hasn’t seen innovation in decades and a great management team with a clear vision. That makes a killer combination. Revolutionizing an Archaic Market Backup and recovery is an extremely archaic market. In the past, it has served as an insurance payment rather than a business asset. From a CIO’s perspective, any money spent on backup and recovery was in hopes that they will never use it. In the best case, it was a complete waste. Think about it — enterprises are spending money that they hope will never be useful, and is of value only in the case of a disaster. Rubrik has redefined the backup and recovery market from an insurance payment to a functional data management platform. You need to manage your data every day, every year, every decade. Rubrik helps you do that very differently and the disaster scenario is only one of many data management functions. This gives CIOs greater flexibility to manage their data based on usage needs…
Rubrik - - Security 101: What Security Really Means For Data Management

Security 101: What Security Really Means For Data Management

Data security is not a new priority for enterprises. In earlier blog posts, we discussed the rising threat of ransomware and how a next-gen data management solution prevented a ransomware attack. Given the exponential growth of data and increasing trend in data breaches, it is imperatives that businesses apply the highest security standards to all their data. However, the concept of security is often confounded in the context of data management. To clarify the important terms, components, and their implications for data security within enterprise backup and recovery, I sat down with Adam Goldberg, who leads product development for Rubrik’s security solutions. Adam comes from a security background with previous experience at the Department of Defense.Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) FIPS 140-2 is the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) security standard used to accredit cryptographic modules. It is often a requirement for a product to be installed in a location where sensitive data is stored. The FIPS 140-2 standard extends far beyond the federal government. For example, financial and healthcare institutions collect, store, and transfer highly sensitive information that needs to be secured. While FIPS 140-2 features four levels of security, only Level…
