How Rubrik Delivers a World-Class Customer Experience

Rubrik recently received the NorthFace ScoreBoard AwardSM from Omega Management Group Corp. for providing excellent customer support in 2016. Giri Iyer, VP of Global Customer Support and Success, explains how he maintains high-quality service among a rapidly-growing customer base. What makes Rubrik’s customer support different from other companies? Rubrik places customer satisfaction at the forefront of support. One way this is achieved is through customer advocacy, meaning that we work with customers to better strategize our product and experience. This internal engagement allows us to understand the needs and pain points of our customers. We have established multiple channels for our “Voice of the Customer” program. In addition to closed case surveys, customers can use embedded thermometers for every case update to provide real-time, one-click feedback. The VOC program also provides an “ideas forum” where they can submit new product ideas, view existing ideas from other customers, and up or down vote ideas. This platform allows customers to connect with Rubrik support, product management, and engineering. All feedback we receive is reviewed – no matter what – and then acted upon by the team. Constant monitoring of results is also a critical step of this process. What is your philosophy…

Rubrik Raises $180 Million at $1.3 Billion – Why it Matters

This past week, we announced that we raised $180 million at a $1.3 billion valuation. The round is led by IVP (same folks who invested in Slack, Snapchat, AppDynamics, MuleSoft) with strong participation from our existing investors Lightspeed Venture Partners and Greylock Partners. Why raise another round? We have not even dipped into the $61 million from Series C since we’ve been judiciously fueling our hyper-growth with cash flow. Simply put, Rubrik is growing extremely fast. We’ve grown our employees by more than 15x in the past two years. We’ve expanded to 5 continents in 5 quarters. We approached $100 million in bookings in just six quarters of selling. We’ve amassed a customer base numbering into several hundred enterprises, with huge penetration into the Fortune 500 and large governments. When several investors approached us to pre-empt the next round of funding, my co-founders and I saw the opportunity to double down on accelerating our business at a rate that the industry has not seen before. The market demand is there and we can further amplify our innovation lead by investing heavily in R&D. To date, we have rolled out 8 product releases with the latest managing data for cloud-native applications while…

Leadership Lab: Ashish Gupta on Building a Team of Relentless Learners

Ashish Gupta recently joined Rubrik as VP of Engineering, India to spearhead a team in Bangalore. With 20 years of experience in technology, including his previous position as VP of Engineering at Flipkart, he is well-versed in driving rapid revenue and team growth. I had the chance to chat with Ashish about recruiting world-class talent and building a strong engineering culture. What is your philosophy on building new teams and recruiting top talent? I believe in the power of small, two-pizza teams in which every individual has ownership of large product problems with significant impact. There are 3 core parts of this strategy:  World-class talent: Hiring top talent refers to skill, as well as the intellectual capacity and courage to go up against tough unsolved problems. Mentorship: Build a pool of senior engineers who have deep experience in solving product problems from scratch and building large-scale, distributed systems. Put one senior engineer in every team to mentor teammates. Large, challenging problems: Identify raw problems at the product problem-statement level that engineers would love to solve. Pairing talent with problems, and giving your people the autonomy and confidence to execute, achieves the best results. This creates a virtuous cycle of world-class…

Rubrik Joins Global .NEXT Series for 2017

Rubrik is excited to sponsor Nutanix .NEXT in Washington D.C. and .NEXT Europe in Nice, France. We’re also sponsoring the .NEXT on Tour series, which takes place in major cities worldwide. Rubrik’s strategic partnership with Nutanix began in 2015, and we’ll be showcasing our product at all of the Nutanix events. Nutanix’s hyperconverged infrastructure stack eliminates the bloat of legacy architecture, simplifies datacenter management, and deploys in under an hour. Rubrik Cloud Data Management (CDM) collapses physically separate hardware and software resources – like backup software, catalog management, deduplicated storage, and data orchestration – into a single fabric that scales up to thousands of nodes. Deduplication, compression, and other data services scale in-line with the cluster to maximize efficiency and savings. Rubrik provides complete data protection for Nutanix environments, including automated backup, instant recovery, unlimited replication, and data archival. Nutanix customers can get Rubrik up and running in less than an hour. Rubrik automatically discovers the entire infrastructure running on the Nutanix platform. Users create data protection policies for backup, replication, and archival in a single policy engine. They assign these to the applications based on data governance needs. Customers achieve near-zero RTO and flexible RPOs, conduct instant recovery testing, and repurpose backup…
Rubrik - - The Untold Origin Story of World Backup Day

The Untold Origin Story of World Backup Day

On March 31st, we join our industry colleagues in celebrating and promoting World Backup Day. After all, friends don’t let friends go without backups. But…have you ever heard the tragic story of how World Backup Day came to be? Although it was thought to be lost in the mists of time and reddit, origin stories aren’t just for superheroes. It was back in the late 2000’s – a time when virtual machines were breeding out of control, budgets were beginning to shrink, and backup administrators were slowly drowning in increasing waves of data growth and virtualization sprawl. Imagine–if you will–our protagonist in his office, slumped in his knock-off Aeron chair. The lights are off, and the luminous glow of his food-chained CRT is casting his face in stark relief. A foreboding backup console has his full attention; he has left the failed complexity of his primary backup server interface and is now scouring individual server backups. His office door opens. Our hero flinches but doesn’t turn around. “If we can’t recover the payroll backups, our heads will roll. It’ll be the last excuse our CIO needs to sign the wholesale outsourcing contract with IBM. His golf buddy was pitching it on…

Leadership Lab: Mark Smith on Understanding Balance in Business

Mark Smith recently joined Rubrik as EVP of Global Sales and Business Development. He brings over 25 years of experience building high-performance global sales, marketing, and business development teams at companies such as Arista Networks, Infoblox, and NetScreen. He has also been named one of VARBusiness’ Top 100 Executives of the year. At Rubrik, we’re excited for Mark’s expertise, successful track record, and sense of humor. I had a chance to sit down with Mark and chat about what he’s learned throughout his career.   As a sales leader at four highly successful companies, what is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned? I’ve learned that everyone needs to be on the same page and share mutual respect. All teams must pull with the same energy and in the same direction to accomplish great things. Achieving this balance means eliminating the cynics and the passengers who are not pulling their weight. You’ve helped four companies grow from the startup stage to IPO. How does going public shape a company’s progress and innovation? From a sales and marketing perspective, it provides a huge uplift in awareness. The IPO itself is an enormous PR event and has a huge immediate impact. The growth a…

Fireside Chat with Rubrik’s Founders: Our First Three Years

In 2014, a VC and three engineers embarked on founding Rubrik. Three years later, the company has grown at an unprecedented pace. In celebration of Rubrik’s 3rd Birthday, I sat down with each co-founder to learn about their experiences and insights on innovating a previously untapped industry. Bipul Sinha – CEO What has been the biggest surprise about starting a company? Hiring top-quality talent. When we started the company, all of us had careers that involved working with highly-talented people. Part of me expected our network to follow us to Rubrik. I found that this wasn’t the case, as many people who are established in their careers are hesitant to take on the risk of a startup. We have managed to succeed in hiring excellent talent, but it was much more difficult than I expected. How has your mindset on leading a business changed since founding Rubrik? The biggest shift has been in my mental framework. As a VC, you’re a skeptic and are looking at the downside. As a founder, you’re an optimist. I think of human beings as having two states: a state of intellect and a state of will. The VC is in this state of intellect. The founder,…

Leadership Lab: Stephen Alfieris on Scaling Teams and Selling in the Federal Market

I had a chance to chat with Stephen Alfieris, who recently joined Rubrik as VP of Federal. Stephen spent 21 years at EMC in various positions, including DVP Federal. He also served as CEO of IntelliDyne and recently built the Federal Division for ServiceNow. He has developed a specialty in the federal market with a history of building strong sales teams. How did you get into the federal government sector? After 13 years and 8 different positions within EMC, leadership asked me to make a transition from commercial sales to a role leading the federal sector market. Over the next seven and a half years, I learned the market, built a global business, and (along with a few failures) experienced great success. What’s unique about the sales strategy for the federal sector? Federal Government is a highly-regulated market. The Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) defines how government organizations contract with commercial entities for “goods and services.” In addition, there are ever-evolving certification and compliance requirements. There are two primary aspects of the federal sector that make it different from other markets. Congress warrants contracting officers with priorities that often do not align with the priorities of the business owner. Secondly, there are over…
Rubrik - - The Interesting Challenge of Backing Up NAS

The Interesting Challenge of Backing Up NAS

Rubrik is pleased to announce support for Network Attached Storage (NAS) backups such as NetApp and Isilon with our 3.0 Firefly release. Given that NAS support is one of the most common customer requests in 2016, we are offering an innovative solution for managing NAS data that provides faster Recovery Point & Recovery Time Objectives (RPO & RTO), incremental-forever backups, and cloud archive capabilities. We’re delivering these capabilities without sacrificing storage efficiency or tying the customer to a complex NDMP-based (Network Data Management Protocol) solution. What makes NAS backups so difficult? Two characteristics make NAS backups difficult:  Agents – It is impossible to install an agent since NAS is sold as an appliance.  Dataset Size – NAS systems and datasets have grown in size with the industry. When NDMP was first introduced, a very large NAS dataset might have been 10 TB. Today, NAS datasets typically tend to be huge, running into 100s of TBs or PBs. For these reasons, traditional backup vendors using ancient approaches like NDMP have failed to keep pace in providing fast, incremental-forever backups with efficient storage usage and short RTOs. What are the advantages and differentiators of our NAS approach? Vendor Agnostic – Our approach works with all…
