Fireside Chat with Rubrik’s Founders: Our First Three Years

In 2014, a VC and three engineers embarked on founding Rubrik. Three years later, the company has grown at an unprecedented pace. In celebration of Rubrik’s 3rd Birthday, I sat down with each co-founder to learn about their experiences and insights on innovating a previously untapped industry. Bipul Sinha – CEO What has been the biggest surprise about starting a company? Hiring top-quality talent. When we started the company, all of us had careers that involved working with highly-talented people. Part of me expected our network to follow us to Rubrik. I found that this wasn’t the case, as many people who are established in their careers are hesitant to take on the risk of a startup. We have managed to succeed in hiring excellent talent, but it was much more difficult than I expected. How has your mindset on leading a business changed since founding Rubrik? The biggest shift has been in my mental framework. As a VC, you’re a skeptic and are looking at the downside. As a founder, you’re an optimist. I think of human beings as having two states: a state of intellect and a state of will. The VC is in this state of intellect. The founder,…

Leadership Lab: Stephen Alfieris on Scaling Teams and Selling in the Federal Market

I had a chance to chat with Stephen Alfieris, who recently joined Rubrik as VP of Federal. Stephen spent 21 years at EMC in various positions, including DVP Federal. He also served as CEO of IntelliDyne and recently built the Federal Division for ServiceNow. He has developed a specialty in the federal market with a history of building strong sales teams. How did you get into the federal government sector? After 13 years and 8 different positions within EMC, leadership asked me to make a transition from commercial sales to a role leading the federal sector market. Over the next seven and a half years, I learned the market, built a global business, and (along with a few failures) experienced great success. What’s unique about the sales strategy for the federal sector? Federal Government is a highly-regulated market. The Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) defines how government organizations contract with commercial entities for “goods and services.” In addition, there are ever-evolving certification and compliance requirements. There are two primary aspects of the federal sector that make it different from other markets. Congress warrants contracting officers with priorities that often do not align with the priorities of the business owner. Secondly, there are over…
Rubrik - - The Interesting Challenge of Backing Up NAS

The Interesting Challenge of Backing Up NAS

Rubrik is pleased to announce support for Network Attached Storage (NAS) backups such as NetApp and Isilon with our 3.0 Firefly release. Given that NAS support is one of the most common customer requests in 2016, we are offering an innovative solution for managing NAS data that provides faster Recovery Point & Recovery Time Objectives (RPO & RTO), incremental-forever backups, and cloud archive capabilities. We’re delivering these capabilities without sacrificing storage efficiency or tying the customer to a complex NDMP-based (Network Data Management Protocol) solution. What makes NAS backups so difficult? Two characteristics make NAS backups difficult:  Agents – It is impossible to install an agent since NAS is sold as an appliance.  Dataset Size – NAS systems and datasets have grown in size with the industry. When NDMP was first introduced, a very large NAS dataset might have been 10 TB. Today, NAS datasets typically tend to be huge, running into 100s of TBs or PBs. For these reasons, traditional backup vendors using ancient approaches like NDMP have failed to keep pace in providing fast, incremental-forever backups with efficient storage usage and short RTOs. What are the advantages and differentiators of our NAS approach? Vendor Agnostic – Our approach works with all…

Accelerating Our Automation Focus

If you follow Rubrik, it’s hard to miss that we’re focused on enabling automation in the datacenter. We built an API into Rubrik from the very beginning and frequently talk about automation — whether in blog posts, customer discussions, or presentations. As 2017 begins, we plan to expand this focus. Our goal is to give back and help the IT community by showing users what can be done with the Rubrik API and automation. We’ll even have some product announcements around API support! Automation Is the Future of the Modern Datacenter Simply put, we believe that the IT world is heading towards automation. If you’d like an intro on this topic, this post entitled “Over $500M invested in API companies in 2016, with 16 acquisitions” is a great primer. Today’s IT environments are becoming increasingly more complex. In some cases, companies such as Rubrik do a lot of hard work under the covers to abstract that complexity underneath policy-driven architectures. A lot of work and decision-making goes into turning a large amount of architecture + development, as pictured above, into simple policies. However, customers will always need additional capabilities and the ability to link multiple products together. These needs may be satisfied via…

Exploring Cloud Data Management at Tech Field Day 12

It’s not often that I get to present to a room full of amazingly talented colleagues gathered from all around the world. But when I do, it’s typically during one of Gestalt IT’s Field Day presentations. Recently, the Rubrik team sat down in front of a delegation from Tech Field Day 12 to get nerdy and deep dive into various components within the Rubrik Cloud Data Management stack. The goal was to dissect the simplicity that is baked into our enterprise-grade software offering and showcase how it works. If you missed the event, no worries! I’m going to walk you through the topics we covered and share all of the video recordings. As a special bonus, you can view Rubrik’s past appearances at Tech Field Day 10 and Virtualization Field Day 5. I also made sure to include a special slide for our friend Eric Wright over at Turbonomic because of his Tweet: Dear every single tech marketing team: please stop using the phrase "game-changing". Seriously, just stop. — Eric Wright (@discoposse) November 15, 2016 Rubrik Introduction The first segment provided a level set for those who are new to Rubrik, but also discussed what’s new with the latest and…

Star Wars & Swag – Does It Get Any Better?

We’re definitely believers in the phrase “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” If you look at that from an IT industry perspective, it’s hard to imagine a larger cultural Force when it comes to “acceptable toys for adults” than Star Wars. (Don’t worry, Star Trek fans – we know you’re out there too!) As you can tell from our latest Backup Wars campaign, we’re putting our money where our mouth is: Just for signing up, you’ll get a bunch of free stuff – details at the link below. Join the Rubrik Alliance, get your Backup Wars kit. And make sure to check out the fun new Backup Wars video. But wait, it gets better. Have you ever imagined the magic of truly using the Force? Moving your hands and controlling things through the sheer power of your mind? Finding the Dark Side and embracing it for all its beauty and…mwu-ha-ha-ha…. Sorry, I got a bit carried away there. But there was a point. If you tweet a Star Wars inspired photo or video and tag @RubrikInc + #backupwars, you’ll be entered to win a Sphero BB-8. Control a droid with the motion of your hands…well, your hands while…
Rubrik - -  Creating a Transformational Shift with Cloud Data Management

Creating a Transformational Shift with Cloud Data Management

Today, I’m excited to announce KV’s investment in Rubrik, a company that will transform how enterprises recover, manage, and secure all their data across private and public clouds. Rubrik is a company with an immense market that hasn’t seen innovation in decades and a great management team with a clear vision. That makes a killer combination. Revolutionizing an Archaic Market Backup and recovery is an extremely archaic market. In the past, it has served as an insurance payment rather than a business asset. From a CIO’s perspective, any money spent on backup and recovery was in hopes that they will never use it. In the best case, it was a complete waste. Think about it — enterprises are spending money that they hope will never be useful, and is of value only in the case of a disaster. Rubrik has redefined the backup and recovery market from an insurance payment to a functional data management platform. You need to manage your data every day, every year, every decade. Rubrik helps you do that very differently and the disaster scenario is only one of many data management functions. This gives CIOs greater flexibility to manage their data based on usage needs…
Rubrik - - This is Cloud Data Management

This is Cloud Data Management

The cloud is a democracy. In the past, we lived in a restrictive system, one where we were anchored to legacy platforms with a disparate view of our businesses. The cloud represents a new era that liberates enterprises by delivering universal access and automation over their applications. With cloud, enterprises can reduce cost and time-to-market while retaining business agility. The cloud adoption is not a question of “if” but rather “how.” Many enterprises are unable to realize the promise of the cloud because of the limitations within their own infrastructure. They have spent millions and millions on their data centers, and now they want to leverage the pay-as-you-use economics and automation of the cloud while maintaining control and visibility over their data. What they are missing is a killer application that bridges the gap between their owned systems and the cloud. Rubrik is this killer application. As the world’s first Cloud Data Management platform, Rubrik sets data free with an intelligent application providing a real-time, unified management plane over all application data in scalable and efficient manner – regardless of location. Recover, manage, and secure your data. Everywhere. What is Cloud Data Management? Cloud Data Management is a platform that…

Announcing Sponsorship of VMunderground at the 2016 VMworld US

It’s no secret that one of the most valuable things about the VMworld conference is the ability to network with your peers. With so many other folks around who are tackling challenges in the data center, the ability to hear their stories and pick their brain has a high value. Plus, some great friendships can be forged – some of my favorite people are those I met at a previous VMworld! One hallmark of the show is the VMunderground event. It’s a gathering of folks before the chaos begins – a chance to meet and mingle before we are all run ragged with announcements, sessions, keynotes, and other technical delights. I first attended this event when it was held at VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas at the Nine Fine Irishmen. And guess what – it’s back at the same venue! The other snazzy thing about VMunderground? Rubrik is a sponsor! We’re happy to support such a great, community-focused event and have a great amount of appreciation put forth by the team that runs such a high profile and excellently executed event each year. So, make sure to grab a ticket (and if you don’t have one, we’ll have a few…
