Rubrik, How Are My SLAs Doing?

At Rubrik, we hold a hackathon every year so that engineers have an opportunity to work on their creative ideas. Hackathon projects can include product features, productivity related improvements, and exploratory concepts. This year was our second hackathon, which was held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA. There was a tremendous amount of excitement built up to the day of the hackathon. As it neared, we were constantly reminded to think of ideas, form teams, and chalk up a plan of execution. Our customers love Rubrik’s simplicity. Rubrik’s UI is minimalistic, user-friendly, and intuitive. The question I asked myself was how can I redefine how customers interact with their Rubrik cluster? The answer – a voice based conversational interface that would make our product even more easy to use. Let’s begin by answering our customers’ most important question – “How are my SLAs doing?” So how did I set out to do this? First, I figured out what building blocks to use. Amazon Lex enables one to quickly and easily build sophisticated, natural language, conversational bots. With Amazon Lex, I could define intents and train the bot to identify these intents. A simple example of intent is to know the…

Designed for Security: Introducing Software Encryption at Rest

There’s been a lot of buzz around the recent launch of version 3.1 of Rubrik Cloud Data Management. As our 7th product release, this version introduces a variety of rich new features to our platform that help make data management even more comprehensive. In previous posts, we discussed Rubrik Envision, which delivers visual data for platform analytics, and support for physical Windows servers. Version 3.1 also bolsters our security capabilities by adding software encryption for data at rest. The update is available on the r300 appliances, which ship with a built-in Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip. Rubrik already supports hardware-based encryption on r528 appliances. So, now customers can enable data-at-rest encryption across Rubrik appliances, as well as role-based access control, to protect their data. Here are some of the key benefits our software encryption feature delivers: Comprehensive Protection We use AES 256-bit encryption to protect all of the data associated with your Rubrik cluster. We encrypt all files in Atlas, Rubrik’s cloud-scale file system. In addition, metadata, logs, and generated stats are encrypted. Simplicity Software encryption for data at rest is supported for the r300 appliance series. It is easily enabled at bootstrap and requires no user intervention thereafter. It…

Rubrik - - Using Automation to Validate Applications and Services in Rubrik Backups

Using Automation to Validate Applications and Services in Rubrik Backups

The ability to restore files, folders, applications, and entire servers is the ultimate goal of data protection. With that in mind, there are a lot of checks in place to validate that all source data has been correctly stored within the Rubrik Cloud Data Management (CDM) fabric. This includes CRCs to ward against corruption, over-the-wire encryption to prevent tampering, and the use of erasure coding to opportunistically place data across hardware components to avoid single points of failure. In addition, it’s a good idea to validate that a backup can be restored. The best method is to perform a restore of the data to ensure that whatever is required – be it files, folders, applications, or entire servers – can be presented back to the users. Traditionally, this has been clunky. Solutions that offer such workflows are often quite slow to complete and limited in scope. Plus, they operate in a closed-source orchestration engine that is tightly coupled to the solution itself. Wouldn’t it be great if you could perform backup validation using your existing configuration management engines instead? With Rubrik, validating is easy. Because the entire CDM fabric is designed to operate at scale across any on-premises or cloud…
