Tampa Bay Rays on Pitching a Perfect Game with Rubrik

Juan Ramirez, Vice President of Information Technology at the Tampa Bay Rays, discusses how Rubrik transformed the game of data management, ensuring operations run smoothly both during the season and offseason. Tell me about your role at Tampa Bay Rays. I’m the Vice President of Information Technology at the Tampa Bay Rays and am responsible for the Rays’ technology strategies and operations. I joined the team in 2006 and am heading into my 10th season. When I joined the department, it was just myself and an assistant. Since then, the department has grown greatly from 2 to 12 people. What challenges were you experiencing with backup prior to Rubrik? Backup has always been an issue around here. Our previous solution was very cumbersome, and since our business grows so fast and is very sensitive, keeping up with the changes on a daily basis was a struggle. Particularly, we had a lot issues with tape and backing up to disk. Also, the recovery and response times were never there. We have 350 VMs, and we try to protect as much as we can. The baseball operations and workloads are the most important to us. Thus, if anyone needs to restore a…

Integrating Rubrik with ServiceNow for Rich Self-Service

A key part of simple, hands-free data management is automation. That’s why Rubrik provides a suite of RESTful APIs for creating custom workflows. This post walks you through Rubrik’s integration with ServiceNow and some common use cases. ServiceNow is a cloud-based IT service management platform designed to reduce costs and increase business agility across all ITIL processes. Their rich integration system is built into their platform and enables end users to connect with third-party systems that may be otherwise unavailable. Rubrik’s integration with ServiceNow is a custom app that provides common backup and recovery workflows to the end user and helpdesk team through items presented in the ServiceNow Service Catalog. Ultimately, this functionality provides a higher level of self-service that is ITIL compliant and aligns with existing business rules.   What exactly can you do with the ServiceNow & Rubrik integration? ServiceNow Service Catalog The Service Catalog lists form-based requests for the help desk or end users who use ServiceNow as a central point of inquiry. Rubrik’s integration includes catalog items that are easily found within the Rubrik category. These items can also be moved into more user-friendly categories to align with the service desk standards. While it may seem…

Top 3 Mistakes to Avoid When Automating Your Business

Businesses worldwide are leveraging automation to deliver services at a lower cost with a higher level of customer satisfaction. The return on investment for automation is well documented, both in financial benefit and higher customer retention rates. But not all efforts to implement automation are created equal, and many companies stumble to meet their goal. Integrating automation into a business requires planning and strategy. This post walks through the top pitfalls to avoid when implementing automation. Recreating the Workflow The first mistake many businesses make is automating the steps of an existing workflow. This may seem like a shortcut since the workflow provides a blueprint for the steps needed to achieve the end result. But workflows created around manual processes focus more on previously performed tasks than on the entire problem. I experienced this firsthand while developing a process to automate billing based on cloud usage. The existing workflow had many steps that required manually altering the output of the previous step and reformatting it before sending it to the next person in the chain. This process created a significant margin of error, as even minor changes caused the entire chain to break. This leads to our next major pitfall.…

Combating the Evolving Landscape of Ransomware

About one year ago today, we pointed out an emerging security crisis in the healthcare industry. Cyber threats targeting hospital data were becoming a regular event, with some computer systems held captive for a reputedly multi-million dollar ransom. Beyond the Bitcoin cost, ransomware puts patient care at risk since many organizations must stop operations for over a week. More recently, the worldwide spread of a virus known as “WannaCry” has been decimating operations at UK healthcare provider National Health Service (NHS) in addition to telecom, logistics, and car manufacturers. In total, it has caused havoc to over 230,000 computers in 150 countries. This attack has been aggressively accelerating while CIOs struggle to find a realistic solution. The root cause comes down to the usual suspects: a combination of phishing emails and poorly patched security vulnerabilities. This particular vulnerability was so caustic that Microsoft released an update to several of their deprecated operating systems such as Windows XP and Server 2003. Additionally, users need to stop using older protocols like SMB 1.0 because they create a multitude of vulnerabilities that allow attackers to commandeer a system. It’s on the vendor and partner communities to come up with innovative and effective methods…

The Challenges of DR: Achieving Near-Zero RTO

As the Director of Sales Engineering at Rubrik, I am privileged to meet many customers across different geographies and all verticals. I witness a variety of challenges, but there are some common themes. One challenge nearly every customer battles is how to effectively manage disaster recovery (DR). To provide disaster recovery, businesses often utilize several options, including various forms of replication (array based, application based, hypervisor based), DR automation tools (i.e. VMware Site Recovery Manager), and backups. These approaches are typically costly and complex; they require similar hardware at Production and the DR location site, and users must manage multiple tools. A good DR plan provides multiple layers of protection from a myriad of failure types. This can be accomplished with tools such as snaps, data replication, and data protection. Rubrik can play a key role in your DR plan. With our solution, customers reduce their RPO to 1 hour and achieve a near-zero RTO. Rubrik leverages components of a modern data center like converged architecture, flash, and deduplication to efficiently replicate data from Brik to Brik and instantly recover VMs. Each Brik provides 30k IOPs, which allows workloads to temporarily run directly from Rubrik until production issues are rectified.…
