Using Automation to Validate Applications and Services in Rubrik Backups

The ability to restore files, folders, applications, and entire servers is the ultimate goal of data protection. With that in mind, there are a lot of checks in place to validate that all source data has been correctly stored within the Rubrik Cloud Data Management (CDM) fabric. This includes CRCs to ward against corruption, over-the-wire encryption to prevent tampering, and the use of erasure coding to opportunistically place data across hardware components to avoid single points of failure. In addition, it’s a good idea to validate that a backup can be restored. The best method is to perform a restore of the data to ensure that whatever is required – be it files, folders, applications, or entire servers – can be presented back to the users. Traditionally, this has been clunky. Solutions that offer such workflows are often quite slow to complete and limited in scope. Plus, they operate in a closed-source orchestration engine that is tightly coupled to the solution itself. Wouldn’t it be great if you could perform backup validation using your existing configuration management engines instead? With Rubrik, validating is easy. Because the entire CDM fabric is designed to operate at scale across any on-premises or cloud…

Isolated Recovery & Ransomware: Cost vs. Value

Has a vendor been talking to you about Isolated Recovery recently? Or have you been thinking about duplicating and air gapping your backup systems with scheduled updates to protect against ransomware? Could there be a less expensive, less complex way to achieve similar benefits? Let’s dive into these ideas to explore the concept and limitations of Isolated Recovery–and where Rubrik can help. What is Isolated Recovery? From a network perspective, the concept of air gapping isn’t new. Simply put, there’s physical isolation between two networks – most commonly a secured and an unsecured network. While Isolated Recovery shares this “physical isolation” characteristic, it is built on the concept of having a separate data center infrastructure that is disconnected from the primary infrastructure via an air gap. In the case of Isolated Recovery, the air gap is closed on a regular schedule for replication updates. Think of this as being similar to the operational overhead of a DR infrastructure. In theory, if your files are encrypted by ransomware, there is complete surety that your air-gapped data isn’t affected and is available for restore. Is there a real benefit? You might already be thinking about update schedules. What if the ransomware isn’t detected…

3 Cloud Data Management Trends You’ll See in 2017

Data collection and analysis have become crucial for reaching business goals across industries. As the role of data has transformed, so has the way in which it is stored, protected, and managed. Growing use of the cloud, both private and public, has led to a marriage of hardware and software that provides cost-effective, simplified solutions. With no signs of slowing down, industry leaders and startups are spearheading innovation in the cloud data management space. Here are the top trends to watch for in 2017: 1. The Democratization of Data The amount of data that companies collect has never been higher, and cloud computing makes it more readily available to employees. Data that was once reserved for top directors is now imperative for lower-level workers to make smart business decisions. Democratization of data describes exactly this—providing employees access to relevant data. However, there are challenges to this newfound openness. In order for data to be delivered securely and efficiently, IT departments must be able to easily control who can and cannot access specific data sets. Another challenge is that as data usage increases, so does the amount of data in the environment due to actions such as dataset cloning. To simplify cloud data democracy…

Exploring Cloud Data Management at Tech Field Day 12

It’s not often that I get to present to a room full of amazingly talented colleagues gathered from all around the world. But when I do, it’s typically during one of Gestalt IT’s Field Day presentations. Recently, the Rubrik team sat down in front of a delegation from Tech Field Day 12 to get nerdy and deep dive into various components within the Rubrik Cloud Data Management stack. The goal was to dissect the simplicity that is baked into our enterprise-grade software offering and showcase how it works. If you missed the event, no worries! I’m going to walk you through the topics we covered and share all of the video recordings. As a special bonus, you can view Rubrik’s past appearances at Tech Field Day 10 and Virtualization Field Day 5. I also made sure to include a special slide for our friend Eric Wright over at Turbonomic because of his Tweet: Dear every single tech marketing team: please stop using the phrase "game-changing". Seriously, just stop. — Eric Wright (@discoposse) November 15, 2016 Rubrik Introduction The first segment provided a level set for those who are new to Rubrik, but also discussed what’s new with the latest and…
