Converged Data Management Unwrapped – Cloud Native

Intelligently placing data into a variety of different formats and across geographical locations is non-trivial. With data protection, however, this isn’t just a nice to have; it’s often a functional design requirement. Doing so provides layers of safeguards against data-specific failures as well as local or regional catastrophes. In this fifth and final deep dive series post, I’m going to pick apart how Converged Data Management offers a truly Cloud Native experience for data protection workflows, and how that differs from the traditional approaches. There’s a fundamental difference between adapting a platform to take advantage of cloud data services, such as public object storage with Amazon S3, versus natively making it part of the platform. This difference can be extrapolated into one metric – simplicity. The amount of complexity that surrounds a platform drives greater inefficiencies and increased chances for error. Additionally, the base foundation of a platform ultimately dictates what features and properties are available for a long-term strategy. Without re-writing the platform from scratch – which is something largely avoided in the enterprise market – the choices are limited. After all, the spin-out and spin-in model used by large corporations to innovate doesn’t exist without reason. In the…

Learning Uptime at Castilleja with Rubrik

Terry Young, Senior Network and Systems Administrator, talks about using Rubrik to overcome the hidden costs in other backup software and easing into cloud services for long-term data retention. Tell me about your role at Castilleja. I’m the Sr. Network and Systems Administrator at Castilleja, and am responsible for anything technology-related to infrastructure. Network, servers, storage, backup. I previously worked down the street at Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD). What challenges have you faced working in academia? What I’ve found challenging with IT environments in academia is the lack of a holistic approach in building out the environment to address the needs. Solutions are tacked on over time without a general framework in mind, resulting in a hodgepodge configuration. At Castilleja, after experiencing two application outages, we started looking for a separate, easy to use, single backup solution stack that has the ability to restore and run on its own stack (without re-hydrating on primary storage and loss of performance), support multi-purpose use cases beyond recovery such as staging and test/dev, and be cost-effective. Prior to Rubrik, our backup software required re-hydration on the primary storage due to performance issues. I had to reserve x-amount of space on our…

Converged Data Management Unwrapped – Instant Data Access

Now that the Rubrik team has returned from an energizing trip to VMworld Barcelona and TechTarget’s Backup 2.0 Road Tour, it’s time to peel the onion a bit further on Converged Data Management in the fourth installment of this deep dive series. In this post, I’ll put the magnifying glass up against Instant Data Access – which is the ability to see and interact with data in a global and real-time manner – to better understand why it’s a critical property in the architecture shown below: First, let’s take a step back. There’s a lot of hemming and hawing on the Internet about data lakes, big data, the Internet of Things (IoT), and so forth. The rub is that data is growing (exponentially), is largely unstructured, and there’s no way to put our hands around it in any meaningful way without machine learning and a plethora of automation. ImageNet is a great example of this in a real world, practical format. This has led to some really nifty architectures being crafted to deal with large data sets and a rise in the popularity in storage systems that are eventually consistent, such as object storage clustering, rather than strongly consistent as typically…

rediCloud Delivers Flexible Service Provider Offerings with Rubrik

Scott Mayers, Director of Data Center and Cloud Technologies, discusses why he switched to Rubrik to power rediCloud’s backup-as-a-service offering. What’s the story behind ATSG and rediCloud? rediCloud, a division of ATSG, is a suite of cloud solutions that bring ultimate flexibility and simplicity to the traditional cloud model. We provide turnkey VM and infrastructure services, virtual desktops, disaster recovery, backup, object storage, and hosted voice. These services can be consumed in piecemeal or in conjunction and can be hosted in our datacenters or placed as a pod on-premises.rediCloud’s mission is to democratize access to leading-edge technologies that can be easily deployed on- or off-prem at prices affordable for organizations with 100 to 4,000+ users across all verticals (HIPAA and PCI compliant). rediCloud’s mission is to democratize access to leading-edge technologies that can be easily deployed on- or off-prem at prices affordable for organizations with 100 to 4,000+ users across all verticals (HIPAA and PCI compliant). What led you to Rubrik? rediBackup is our Backup-as-a-Service offering in the making. We had selected a backup software vendor, one which is fairly common in the managed service provider space and which our engineering team was fairly acquainted with already. However, we recognized…

It’s Official: Rubrik is VMware Ready!

We all enjoy adding new, innovative technology solutions to our data centers to increase productivity, solve difficult challenges, and gain a competitive edge in the market. However, this often requires a bit of a balancing act against the risk of making changes to the status quo – both in terms of the technology used and assuaging stakeholders that financially critical workloads will continue to function. In the case of Rubrik’s Converged Data Management solution, the r300 Series Hybrid Cloud Appliance, adoption has been spectacular and customers have shared some really snazzy feedback on how their operations and work-life balance has improved. We sweep away a very large set of the complexity surrounding data protection, disaster recovery, and workload restores, allowing IT professionals to innovate their skill sets and processes. The large number of customer testimonials we feature certainly help back up our claims, but there’s still more we can do! Today, I’m really excited to share that we’re making data center adoption of Rubrik’s flagship product line even easier with the announcement of our VMware Ready endorsement. This is VMware’s highest level of endorsement and requires passing a grueling battery of testing and standards requirements, proving that we’re fully invested in…
