Security 101: What Security Really Means For Data Management

Data security is not a new priority for enterprises. In earlier blog posts, we discussed the rising threat of ransomware and how a next-gen data management solution prevented a ransomware attack. Given the exponential growth of data and increasing trend in data breaches, it is imperatives that businesses apply the highest security standards to all their data. However, the concept of security is often confounded in the context of data management. To clarify the important terms, components, and their implications for data security within enterprise backup and recovery, I sat down with Adam Goldberg, who leads product development for Rubrik’s security solutions. Adam comes from a security background with previous experience at the Department of Defense.Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) FIPS 140-2 is the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) security standard used to accredit cryptographic modules. It is often a requirement for a product to be installed in a location where sensitive data is stored. The FIPS 140-2 standard extends far beyond the federal government. For example, financial and healthcare institutions collect, store, and transfer highly sensitive information that needs to be secured. While FIPS 140-2 features four levels of security, only Level…

Evaluating Rubrik From an End User’s Perspective

Lee Merrill, a Senior Technical Support Engineer at Rubrik, was formerly a customer of Rubrik. In this blog post, Lee shares his experience and what he learned while evaluating Rubrik from an end user’s perspective. How did you hear about Rubrik when you were a customer? I had an excellent experience as a Rubrik customer. We had some pretty significant pain points with backup and had been mainly looking at storage to ease our pain. Disk space was our major issue with backups, so we had to remove backups to keep things going. This was a constant pain and consumed a lot of time. A vendor of ours had heard about “this product” that we should check out. He thought it would solve our backup issues. Afterwards, we had our hands on our first Brik. Describe your experience when installing Rubrik A memory I have with Rubrik is setting it up with Eric. After we ingested one small 50GB VM, I thought we should put our file servers to the test.  Thus, 4-5TB VMs were next. At first, these had a couple issue with ingestion, but some of it was due to us only having 1GB nics. Support and engineering was…

Pump up the Excitement – VMworld Approaches!

Has it really been a year already? Apparently so, because another gauntlet of VMworld conferences approach and is bristling with energy and excitement. The Rubrik team and I will once again be embarking on an adventure to tour the Las Vegas and Barcelona events, spreading some serious amounts of knowledge, heavy-hitting swag, and a plethora of other surprises. This year, with thanks to our swelling customer base and buzz around making data protection “not suck,” we’ve set the bar to ludicrous speed with a Platinum presence and all the trimmings that goes along with that. I’m stoked! Earlier, I blogged on Wahl Network with an outline of sessions in which I’m excited to present with the likes of Duncan Epping, Kyle Ruddy, Chris Gurley, and Eric Shanks. If you’re interested in learning more about Rubrik CDM, data center automation, PowerShell and PowerCLI scripting, vRealize Automation blueprints, or vRealize Orchestrator workflows – and you’ll be at either of the VMworld events – you’re in for a treat! Stay tuned for even more epic details as we get closer to the VMware event of the year! 🙂

New White Paper – Rubrik and VMware Virtual SAN

One common thread among all application requirements is the need for reliable, performant storage. Today, that comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes – from legacy, dual-controller arrays to software defined storage using distributed, scale-out architectures. All of the choice can be a tad daunting at times, especially when you consider the criticality of workloads that will be writing and reading their data. At Rubrik, we see a vast number of different storage solutions in production for our customer workloads. One of the first questions that crop up is around compatibility – can we provide data protection services for their VMware virtual machines? The simple answer is: sure! As I’ve rambled on about before, abstraction by way of vSphere APIs for Data Protection (VADP) allows our Converged Data Management fabric to largely ignore the underlying storage technology being used to provide data services to an application. While not all of them are fashioned in the same way, specific nuances are handled by the hypervisor directly. But it’s one thing to say that two technologies work together and quite another thing entirely to prove it out. My many years as an engineer and architect have taught me to “trust,…

How We Built More Efficient Data Archival with Cloud

The move to cloud is no longer a question of if but rather when. However, enterprises are still confused on how to adopt a cloud strategy within their own environments. As our CEO Bipul Sinha stated at the Looking AHEAD Tech Summit, in order to increase cloud adoption, “companies need to create killer applications to leverage the cloud.” At Rubrik, we create applications that help enterprises transition to cloud seamlessly. The first step in the path is to archive the backups. The challenge of archiving to public cloud is ensuring that data can be pulled down into an on-premises location without breaking the bank or your recovery time objectives. This is where Rubrik works its magic. When Rubrik manages your data, it keeps a record of the metadata that is quickly accessible without data rehydration. You can locate VMs and files instantly with Google-like search. Just type a few letters into Rubrik’s predictive search engine, and you’ll get served results instantly. In this post, I will describe how Rubrik archives data and makes data rehydration fast and efficient. Snapshot Upload We have jobs running per VM that archives snapshots depending on the configured SLA policy for that VM. When an…
