Hello World! Welcoming Rubrik’s Python SDK

Rubrik’s ecosystem is already huge–spanning on-premises infrastructure, from the edge to private cloud, and three big public cloud platforms–and continues to grow with each release. We recognize that most enterprises are undergoing some form of digital transformation and are in very different stages of embracing automation. That’s why we built our platform to integrate with many other vendors that can help meet specific business needs. However, with this flexibility comes the challenge of simplifying an ecosystem that uses a variety of programming languages. We selected Python as the next programming software development kit (SDK) to help address these challenges and empower all Rubrik users to be computer programmers. Python was designed as an easy-to-understand programming language and has gained popularity for being beginner-friendly. One of its creators, Guido van Rossum, even claimed to have built Python to empower “all users to be computer programmers.” Being a high-level language, Python reads like English, taking the stress of learning language-specific syntax off beginner coders. It handles and obfuscates much of the complexity, which allows you to learn programming concepts without worrying too much about details. When designing the Python SDK, we wanted to build with the same “philosophy of simplicity” that our…

Rubrik Datos IO 3.0: Enterprise Data Protection for NoSQL Databases

More and more, leading enterprises are turning to next-generation databases to run their businesses and serve their customers. NoSQL databases have become mainstream, with MongoDB and Cassandra / DataStax powering some of the most prominent customer-facing applications. Earlier this year, Rubrik acquired market leader Datos IO after realizing the growing need for a solution built to protect NoSQL databases at enterprise scale. Today, we’re thrilled to announce Datos IO 3.0, codenamed Cygnus, which delivers Rubrik simplicity at NoSQL scale. Our Cygnus release is packed with capabilities to meet the stringent data management needs of large-scale production environments. These features span across three vectors: enterprise-grade features to provide a simple and powerful user experience at scale; new capabilities designed for growing, high change-rate MongoDB workloads; and complete hybrid and multi-cloud support. Here are the key highlights of our new offerings: Enterprise Readiness The majority of our customers are within the enterprise market segment. These organizations are becoming trailblazers of new products and technology for two simple reasons: digital transformation initiatives are accelerating adoption of modern applications and non-relational databases, and modern databases require durable data management that matches the standards of traditional relational databases like Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and DB2.…

Rubrik Named to LinkedIn Top Companies List Second Year Running

Today, LinkedIn has announced its 2018 Top Startups list, and we’re excited to be featured as #10 among many other innovative companies. The list highlights the 50 most sought-after startups to work for based on data from the LinkedIn community, focusing on four core areas: employment growth, engagement, job interest, and attraction of top talent. This achievement comes at time when Rubrik is experiencing unprecedented growth. In just four years, we’ve exploded to over 1,200 employees across 30 countries. We also recently added two industry veterans to our ranks, with John W. Thompson, Chairman of Microsoft, joining as a member of the board and John Chambers, Chairman Emeritus of  Cisco, as a board advisor. But even amidst this growth, we’re committed to staying true to our core values and empowering employees to do their life’s best work. Here are some ways Rubrik is redefining company culture: Building Game-Changing Technology At Rubrik, we know that engineers want to be challenged and build new technologies that solve big problems. This year, we launched Rubrik Polaris, the industry’s first SaaS platform for data management applications. In July, we released the Polaris app Radar, which leverages machine learning to detect and analyze security threats…

The Myth of Boring Backup

Am I crazy for thinking backup is exciting? Prior to joining Rubrik, I was a Gartner analyst for 20+ years and spent the majority of my time there covering primary storage and backup and recovery. As a storage analyst, I saw the consistently high client inquiry volumes on backup and recovery and decided to switch my coverage to this area. Some of my colleagues shook their heads and couldn’t understand why I wanted to cover a technology area that was so “boring.” To me, backup is not boring; it’s the biggest pain point in the entire data center infrastructure! It has often become a huge burden that slows down an organization’s quest for agility. As I studied the market and technologies, I realized that the pain was caused by too little innovation. All the major enterprise backup solutions only had incremental improvements in the past 20 years and couldn’t meet the new backup and recovery performance requirements. As a result of relentless data growth, backup windows have become longer and longer, while recovery is too slow to meet the requirement of new digital initiatives and changing expectations. Today, backup has become one of the most exciting fields because it’s experiencing…
