The Future is Inside This Box

Searching for files in seconds, validating backup jobs, and more importantly, taking vacation. Jaime Huizar, Senior Architect at Power Integrations, talks about the benefits of adopting Rubrik early on. How did you become an Infrastructure Architect? I’ve always loved technology and tinkering with things. As a kid, I was fascinated by computers – taking them apart, putting them back together. Working in IT was a natural path to do what I love: test-driving and using the latest technologies. I’ve been in the business for 20 years. What does Power Integrations do? We’re a semiconductor manufacturing company that specializes in conversion from AC to DC, and vice versa. We can be found anywhere from a cell phone charger to a locomotive to a windmill. Tell me more about how your team supports Power Integrations? Our charter is to keep operations running 24/7 around the world. Any PI (Power Integrations) employee needs to be able to access information any time of the day globally. For us, that means keeping a pulse on the latest technology trends. For example, we were an early adopter of virtualization and started using VMware in 2007. Any technology that can give our business a competitive advantage and…

Welcoming Chris Wahl to Rubrik

Today at Virtualization Field Day 5 (#VFD5) we were thrilled to welcome the newest member of the Rubrik family, Chris Wahl. Chris is a respected voice in next-generation data center technologies and has earned his reputation in the community over the past decade with hands-on experience with enterprise infrastructure design, service orchestration, and data center automation. However, many of us know Chris through his blog, Wahl Network, which ranks in the Top 10 Virtualization Blogs and has earned the favorite independent blogger designation for three years running. He’s also led and presented at VMware User Groups (VMUGs) across the globe, co-authored Networking for VMware Administrators, and holds two VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) certifications. The Opportunity Ahead So, why did Rubrik and Chris join forces? “For far too long, backup and recovery has been a neglected corner of the data center,” Wahl says. “Recent technology breakthroughs have opened the door for Rubrik to create a simple solution that abstracts away the vast majority of data protection road blocks. It’s an extremely exciting time to be working in this space.” We couldn’t agree more. Getting the Word Out on Rubrik There’s no excuse for complex, brittle architectures, frustrating user experiences and worst of all…

Building an Infinitely Scalable Time Machine

A lot has changed in how we manage our personal data (e.g. photo albums) over the last decade. It used to require a lot of effort to store and protect our albums – you’d need to transfer photos from a camera to a computer, burn them on CD drives or external hard disks, and buy more storage as space ran out. Accessing albums was cumbersome – you had to locate the right media and manually browse through the albums to locate the desired photo. Today, we deal with none of the complexity from years past. We take pictures with our phone, and our photos are automatically backed up and managed in the cloud, which never runs out of space. Any photo can be accessed instantly from any device, anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, businesses still deal with all the complexity of managing their data that we, as consumers, faced in the past. In fact, business data is far more complicated than photo albums. Businesses have databases that are constantly changing and need to access both current and past versions of their data. Furthermore, businesses have stringent requirements around the availability and security of their data. Storing data is hard as…

The Need for Scale

For almost two decades, I’ve been advising clients on their storage and backup and recovery system architectures with solutions that are limited in scalability. The need for scale only becomes more paramount over time and often sneaks up on you. Data generation and consumption grow at exponential rates. Data volume and conversely, the need for scale, is driven by three leading factors: Company maturation – Information scales alongside company growth. Economies of scale – Economies of scale bring cost savings. For example, Managed Services Providers (MSPs) are aggregators of multiple SMB environments. Data explosion – Big Data, mobile cloud era, IoT. Need I say more? Now try to imagine AT&T Stadium at max capacity (80,000 people) after a Cowboys game, with just one exit hall. We’ll never get out of here. No thank you. This is what it’s like if you’ve been using current backup and recovery solutions available in the market today. I have spent the last few years setting up multiple media agents, servers, global dedupe pools that don’t dedupe across each other because they are silo’d, or even separate resource pools for dedupe data and snapshot data (it’s the same data!). It was the same story over, over, and…

Customer Perspectives: Nothing is as Easy as Rubrik

Twelve months ago, I saw the value of hyperconvergence when we welcomed Nutanix into our data center. We went from a provider of information technology to a deliverer of operational technology. The time we spent baby-sitting our primary infrastructure was now replaced with time spent propelling the business forward. While we had streamlined our primary environment by converging compute and storage, we continued to waste resources and time grappling with complexity in our secondary environment. We were using two different backup software solutions, which pointed to a backup storage target, and then running custom scripts in parallel. In early 2015, I joined Rubrik’s Early Access program after Jason found me. On March 11th, Eric arrived at Langs. We got the system setup within 15 minutes. The longest part of the Rubrik installation was unboxing and racking the system. Restore is What Matters We’ve been using Rubrik for 83 days now and nothing is as simple as Rubrik. With Rubrik, everything is measured in minutes (even seconds), not hours. Rubrik has restored my confidence in our backup and recovery infrastructure. Anybody in IT will agree with me that backup, by itself, is irrelevant. Restore is what truly matters. However, restoring takes so…
