Next-Gen Backup at Wabash National, North America’s Leading Semi-Trailer Producer

This week, I chat with Steve Bunch, Server and Storage Manager at Wabash National, on how next-gen backup helps Wabash in its quest to keep America’s leading fleets operating efficiently. Tell me about your role at Wabash and how you landed there.   I’ve been working at Wabash for 12 years, right out of college. I started answering phones with the Tier 1 support team, worked my way up the chain, and left to get some server, backup, and virtualization experience. I received a call from Wabash with an offer to re-join as a server admin. The company was  starting to diversify and acquisitions were a part of the strategy, which meant plenty of help was needed to standardize data center environments. The team grew from 3 to 14 people, and I was promoted to Server/Storage Manager, handling everything from servers, storage, virtualization, and business critical applications. What type of backup challenges were you experiencing? Our company is active in M&A activity, which means we acquire lots of different data centers and IT stacks. It wasn’t until I brought in a backup administrator to streamline our multiple backup solutions and firmware upgrade process that I realized how challenging backup was!…

Langs Building Supplies Stops Ransomware Attack in its Tracks

A ransomware attack prevented by a reliable, next-gen backup solution Langs Building Supplies, a leading supplier of timber products in South Queensland, Australia, was recently hit by a ransomware attack. Due to its effective backup infrastructure, the company was able to thwart the threat and restore its data without paying a ransom. Ransomware is a special type of malware that encrypts victims’ data and prevents them from accessing it until a ransom is paid. In a previous post, our security lead David Ramos explained the rising threat of ransomware and strategies for prevention. As Ramos stated, “With an effective backup solution, ransomware can ideally be reduced to a minor inconvenience.” This was certainly true for Langs Building Supplies. We sat down with Matthew Day, ICT and Support Manager at Langs Building Supplies, to discuss his experience defending against a ransomware attack. Q: How were you able to identify a ransomware attack had occurred? A: We have monitoring tools in place to send alerts when there are high change rates in the data structure. An alert was triggered, and we were able to shut down the affected VDI desktop within minutes. Because we could stop the attack mid-stream, we were able…

Top 3 Reasons to Attend Looking AHEAD Tech Summit 2016

Among the myriad of various vendor and technology focused conferences, a few really set themselves apart for their dedication to thought leadership and exploration of today’s answers to tomorrow’s problems. One of them is run by a consulting firm named AHEAD, located in the iconic Chicago Loop, a place that I was fortunate enough to be part of for many years as a solutions architect and engineer. The Looking AHEAD Tech Summit, held on 23rd June of 2016, is a different sort of gathering of the minds because it blends folks from successful large enterprises like Amazon and Nutanix with its own mixture of extremely skilled and seasoned architects and principal consultants. I thought it’d be handy to highlight my top three reasons to attend this year’s Looking AHEAD Tech Summit from my own perspective. Without any further ado, here they are: Top 3 Reasons to Attend Looking AHEAD Tech Summit Dan Lyons, Writer and Producer of Silicon Valley For those whom are fans of the hit show Silicon Valley, the morning keynote should be especially noteworthy. Dan Lyons, who is a writer and producer for the show, is presenting a talk entitled How to Completely, Totally, Absolutely Screw Up…

Rubrik Heads to .NEXT

Angelo Luciani from Nutanix sat down with Rolland Miller to chat about the upcoming Nutanix .NEXT conference in Las Vegas during June 20-22. Here are the highlights.  What IT challenges are your customers facing? In the last decade, backup and recovery has suffered from a lack of innovation, resulting in widespread customer pain. Our customers often cite that while solutions have evolved over time, the improvements resemble bolt-ons to a dated architecture. Backup windows are shrinking as data continues to grow exponentially, leading to failed backups. Tape continues its torturous reign over backup admins. Finally, the amount of money to maintain a legacy backup and disaster recovery infrastructure results in a ridiculously high total cost of ownership (TCO). Backup sucks. That’s why we’re making backup sexy again by introducing simplicity and management ease in a plug-and-play 2U appliance. What are some of the technologies you plan on showcasing at .NEXT? We will be showcasing how next-gen backup and recovery works. Our Converged Data Management appliances (which we affectionately call Briks) collapse backup software, catalog management, replication, and deduplicated storage into a single appliance that scales linearly. Our Briks eliminate backup jobs and deliver dead simple policy-based management for automated backup, site-to-site replication, data…

Three Use Cases Demonstrate How Rubrik Rocks Recovery

Our customers and peers in the industry always want to hear about how others are using Rubrik to provide data protection. And as much as I love our technology, it’s really all about how our converged data management solution is being leveraged by those looking to ensure that their SLA requirements are being met (or exceeded). Recently, we wanted to bring in another pair of eyeballs to look at our customer testimonials. The tech-savvy team at ActualTech Media cropped up as a great fit to see what we’re doing, capture our use cases into a white paper, and help provide you with that lightbulb moment that is so awesome to experience when it comes to ditching backup jobs for declarative SLA policies. I humbly invite you to read their brand new paper, hot off the press, focused entirely on addressing three of the most common challenges beleaguering administrators looking to provide data protection for today’s data center and tomorrow’s applications. In this masterpiece of wordcraft, you’ll learn: Use Case 1: Ousting Tape-Based Backups Learn how using cloud and object storage can reduce costs by 60%, provide incredibly more efficient recovery workflows, and offer massively boosted availability for data. Use Case…
