NAS Recovery for the Cloud Era

At Rubrik, we have architected our product for enterprise scale. Our typical NAS customer has at least a few hundred TBs, up to many PBs, of NAS in their environment.  Backing up this large of an environment while ensuring SLA compliance is a huge challenge for them, as it requires a platform that is highly parallelized, vendor-agnostic, and policy-based. With our customers’ pain points at the forefront of our minds, we have built an innovative solution to managing NAS. A Modern Approach to Backing Up NAS We’re focused on developing a solution that delivers both simplicity and high performance, even in large-scale environments. For enterprise customers with NAS systems, our approach delivers four key benefits: Cost-effectiveness: Just like Rubrik is disrupting the overall backup and recovery industry, we’re developing a truly innovative way of protecting today’s enterprise environments. We take a cloud-first approach to our NAS solution so that users can enjoy the flexibility and cost-efficiency of the cloud. Not only do we provide our customers with the ability to archive to on-prem targets such as NFS and object stores, but we also allow users to store files of both structured data (like documents or spreadsheets) and unstructured data (like PDFs…

Cloudy Explorations at Cloud Field Day 3

As Chris Wahl wrote previously… It’s not often that I get to present to a room full of amazingly talented colleagues gathered from all around the world. But when I do, it’s typically during one of Gestalt IT’s Field Day presentations. While Rubrik has presented 5 times at Tech Field Day Events, presenting at Cloud Field Day 3 was particularly special. For the first time, we were able to host the delegates at our groovy HQ in Palo Alto. The tree outside turned out to be a great location for the Cloud Field Day 3 group photo. BUT…before the Rubrik presentations, we loved watching a brand new company launch from stealth – Droplet Computing. It brought a tear to our eyes as we remembered how we ended our own stealthy ways not even three short years ago. Chris Wahl kicked off our sessions with an introduction to Rubrik, our vision for the future, and recent announcements, including Rubrik Datos IO and the new Polaris SaaS platform. His intro helped set the stage for the upcoming presentations, which was appreciated by Tim Crawford and Scott D. Lowe. Next, we moved into a deep dive and demo of CloudOut, our long-term retention technology…

Intro to Rubrik Datos IO 2.5: Your Primer on Our Newest Product

At Rubrik, we believe Rubrik Datos IO has come along at a perfect time. As more organizations choose NoSQL databases to rapidly build their modern applications, they also struggle with ensuring these applications are protected. Rubrik Datos IO was built to tackle this problem head on. We recognize that many of you are interested in learning more about Rubrik Datos IO for NoSQL and distributed databases, and we recently held a webinar to discuss our product – and our customers – in greater detail. Here’s a quick rundown of what we covered in the webinar, which is available to watch on-demand here. The background: why NoSQL databases need data protection Enterprises are increasingly investing in NoSQL and cloud-native infrastructure. As with most big trends in technology, there are many factors behind this: these platforms take advantage of distributed commodity hardware, are designed with today’s unstructured data in mind, and are easier to configure as highly available. Today, applications built on NoSQL databases like MongoDB and Apache Cassandra / Datastax are at the center of many Fortune 500 companies’ operations. Companies that selected these products to help their application developers build faster 10 years ago now have many critical applications at…

Grove Bank & Trust Is Hurricane-Ready with Rubrik

A South Florida staple since 1926, Grove Bank & Trust is the oldest continuously operating bank in Miami Dade County. Named for the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami that hosts its headquarters, Grove Bank & Trust delivers checking, savings, lending, financial planning, insurance, and investment services to customers through its five branch offices in Miami, Aventura, and Coral Gables. At Grove Bank & Trust, CIO Sergio Garcia leads a team of three that handles all IT functions and initiatives across the entire bank. What challenges were you experiencing with data protection? Our legacy backup solution was unreliable, difficult to manage, and often resulted in failed backups. These inadequacies placed Grove Bank at risk of being non-compliant with SLAs and industry regulations. We have to hold a lot of our data for multiple years, and we weren’t backing up everything that we needed to in case of a disaster. It’s not just that the old solution was difficult to use, it’s that it made it difficult to provide the regulators with proof that we have backups, can recover, and have completed adequate testing. What were you looking for in your new solution? The bank is growing very rapidly, and we’ve been aggressively…

Harnessing Intelligent Application Instantiation with CloudOn

Almost one year ago, Rubrik’s 4.0 “Alta” release was launched to supply those looking to build amazing IT with a solution teeming with helpful features and ecosystem integration points. For application mobility or disaster recovery, Alta introduced CloudOn as an intelligent application instantiation feature that operates across data centers and clouds. The idea is to take all data earmarked for long-term retention and start actively using it to construct workloads in the public cloud, regardless of the source format. This has an added bonus of using data that has already been efficiently stored in the cloud to construct workloads without further incurring a network transfer hit. In a nutshell – Rubrik’s Cloud Data Management software knows which applications have been archived to Amazon S3 or Azure Blob Storage and can convert any of the backup points into runnable, native instances within those same public cloud environments. My team and I even showed this live at Cloud Field Day 2 back in 2017 – no hiding behind marketecture slides or canned videos for this crew! 🙂 While that’s all fine and dandy, the real value can be found in the use cases. I’ve stood up on my soapbox on this topic…
