One Cloud to Rule Them All

Looking at modern IT infrastructures, it is clear we have mostly entered a cloud-first era. Even more traditional enterprises are incorporating a cloud strategy at the risk of being out-innovated or outpaced by their competition. “We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction.” — Bill Gates While the public cloud has gained a lot of attention with the rise of Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure, it is important to still ask yourself which “cloud-like” characteristics and services can benefit your particular environment. Not every business will benefit from moving completely into the public cloud. To solve for your specific use case, you need to look at all the tools at your disposal. Journey to the Cloud Not everyone takes the same path to the cloud, nor should they. As Eric Shanks wrote in his Gestalt IT blogpost, “Rubrik’s own Internet page title is ‘The Cloud Data Management Company’ which just screams at customers that it’s a cutting edge future looking company.” I agree that cloud-washing is rampant, and cloud should be considered less of a check box and…

Rubrik Is Named to the Forbes Cloud 100

Rubrik is honored and humbled to be named to the Forbes Cloud 100 alongside so many innovative companies. Compiled with the help of partners Bessemer Venture Partners and Salesforce Ventures, the Forbes Cloud 100 recognizes the “best and brightest” of private cloud companies. The list is based on operating metrics such as revenue and funding, alongside input from 25 public cloud CEO peers. Rubrik has become the fastest growing enterprise company ever. In addition to nearing $100M run rate in booking in only six quarters selling, we have grown our customer base 11x over the past year and half, and have delivered rapid innovation via nine major product releases. The future is bright with cloud. Rubrik built the first Cloud Data Management Platform to empower customers to mobilize applications, automate protection policies, recover from ransomware, and search and analyze application data at scale. We’ve brought meaningful numbers of large enterprises and their applications to the Cloud, like Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP, Driscoll’s, and Tampa Bay Rays. We do this by making the Cloud incredibly simple, and by delivering compelling new capabilities using the Cloud that can be delivered anytime, anywhere. Rubrik was architected from Day 1 to deliver…

Data Protection for the Changing Enterprise

The modern enterprise is changing. We are moving towards a world of containers, API-first architectures, and cloud-native applications; the latter two are discussed by Chris Wahl, Rubrik’s Chief Technologist, in a previous post. Enterprise technology is moving from email to Slack, relational databases to NoSQL, and more. But not every company is moving at warp speed, and both Oracle and Microsoft are still relevant in almost every data center. While Rubrik protects the enterprise on-premises, we are far more than a converged data management hardware appliance. We support multiple architectures beyond hardware via Rubrik Edge, our software-only appliance for ROBO, and Cloud Cluster for cloud-native apps and public cloud data protection. Rubrik is evolving and growing rapidly to meet cutting-edge business requirements while maintaining a Google-like, web-scale architecture and striking simplicity. Let’s Talk Applications! Tim Carr is right (don’t tell him I said that) — DBAs typically do not like to step outside of their comfort zone or native toolsets. Luckily, with our new Oracle integration, Rubrik provides its core benefits such as immutability and policy-driven management while integrating with native Oracle capabilities. Our approach is to integrate with RMAN, which provides agentless support (yay!) but still allows Oracle DBAs to use…

Rubrik Cloud Data Management: Security by Design

Since the beginning, Rubrik’s Cloud Data Management platform has been designed with security as one of its core principles. Our goal is to ensure that data is managed in a secure and responsible manner, independent of its location. This capability is growing more important with the changes to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which goes into effect on May 25, 2018, for any organisation that processes or stores data from individuals in the EU. For companies that must comply with GDPR, security by design is imperative. The regulation requires companies to use solutions in which data protection is designed into the development rather than added on at a later point. Requirements apply to on-prem and cloud environments, as well as to measurements that prevent employee-caused breaches. Data Management Designed for Protection Rubrik delivers end-to-end encryption across all environments while maintaining performance. It starts at the point of ingesting the data from your production systems. For both virtual and physical environments, we encrypt data in-flight to protect it from eavesdropping. Once the data arrives to the Rubrik cluster, customers can choose the method for encryption at-rest, either using software-based encryption or FIPS 140-2 Level 2 Certified hardware-based encryption. Rubrik also offers robust key management…

Superior Architecture for a Cloud-Native World

If there’s anything that years of consulting with enterprise clients has taught me, it’s that the world of technology continues to accelerate through iteration after iteration of new architectures, models, and solutions at a pace that is difficult to grasp. We previously lived in a world where all applications resided on bare metal, and waterfall projects took years to release. Now, the rules of small steps and cloud-first are percolating throughout the minds of cloud architects, driving innovation. As Rubrik’s Chief Technologist, I’ve applied a lens to my experiences as an architect to really scratch the surface on this whole cloud data management ideal in an exploratory series of blog posts. In a nutshell, being cloud native, entirely API-driven, infinitely scalable, having instant data access, and, most importantly, being software fueled are the ingredients necessary for moving the needle in the stagnant world of data protection. The Road Traveled Thus Far Two years later, one only has to look so far as incumbent solutions using yet another coat of paint to hide long-tailed technology debts to see the short, dismal future ahead when compared to newer ways of thinking. By wiping the technology slate clean in an effort to make backup…
