Combat Ransomware & Increase Resiliency with Rubrik and Azure

It’s 2020, and the frequency of and repercussions from ransomware are getting worse. Bad actors are taking advantage of increases in remote work and the lapses or gaps in security measures as the attack-surface spreads. In Q1 2020, the average enterprise ransom payment increased to $111,605, up 33% from Q4 of 2019. Business interruption costs are often 5-10x higher than direct ransomware incident costs. Lost revenue, downtime, and brand damage are factors that severely affect victims of ransomware if they’re unable to recover quickly. Recently, Karl Rautenstrauch, Principal Program Manager with the Microsoft Azure engineering team, gave a highly informative presentation about how Rubrik and Microsoft Azure are a powerhouse combination in helping to defeat ransomware. Here are some key takeaways from the presentation: A Common Ransomware Reality The following scenario happened to an Azure customer. It’s a bad story, but it’s one everyone can learn from. The customer’s entire network was impacted by a particularly nefarious form of ransomware that not only deleted content on users’ workstations where the ransomware was first encountered, but reached out across the network and deleted content from NAS appliances and from an appliance used to back up to the Azure Cloud. The ransomware…

3 Truths About Moving Large Workloads to the Cloud

We are in the age where data is no longer the endgame for businesses, it’s merely a place to start. Deep insights that drive innovation, enhance customer engagement, and improve business outcomes can be pulled from data. So, how you treat your data can have a profound bearing on the conclusions you draw and the business success you realize. Businesses that want to move their big data applications to the cloud (like SAP, Oracle, HPC) in order to open up the vast opportunities the cloud offers in terms of data treatment have, historically, faced significant barriers. Traditionally, the biggest obstacles have been bandwidth limitations in getting the applications to the cloud and a lack of control over data, both in-transit and at rest. After data has been migrated to the cloud, you won’t necessarily have the same suite of tooling to manage it that you would have on-premises. The business process differs as that data moves. And, of course, data-in-transit faces more potential exposure and is therefore more vulnerable. However, with advancements in both internet infrastructure and secure data management solutions, the barriers that have held companies back from the cloud in the past have been removed. Now, there is…

Be Data-Forward: Embrace a Hybrid Cloud Data Management Strategy

In a recent webinar, a panel of hybrid cloud experts from Microsoft, Rubrik, and HCL Technologies provided insight into hybrid cloud and data protection trends that will be evolving over the next 12 to 24 months. The panel also recognized some of the key positive business outcomes for customers, and discussed how Microsoft, Rubrik, and HCL have come together to help enterprises digitally transform through their joint solution. Trending in Technology A recent survey conducted by HCL and Vanson Bourne shows that: 47% of respondents said their IT infrastructure is “completely ready” to support digital initiatives, while 49% are not ready, and 4% are only partially ready 95% of organizations agree that IT infrastructure transformation will help them innovate faster 94% of enterprises said that cloud adoption is a priority for them The panel found that there were new directions to their conversations with customers. The following are the six trends shaping the solutions they are delivering. 6 Trends Shaping Hybrid Cloud Customer Conversations Service Over Servers: The service model itself is changing. Customers do not want to talk about servers and technologies. They want to focus on the services they will receive as business and technology move forward. Consuming…

Helping Customers with Their Cloud Journey

There was a time not so long ago when adopting the public cloud was considered too big of a risk for the enterprise. Today, enterprises are seeing public cloud vendors as strategic partners and exploring new ways to leverage the innovation, agility, and scale of providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Tim Carr explains how enterprises are embracing the public cloud in a phased approach in this Gestalt IT blog post.  Source: Can a Backup Appliance Really Help your Enterprise Cloud Strategy? – Part 2 These cloud journey phases often look like this: Phase 1: Leverage basic public cloud services that require minimal changes to current workloads or processes. Phase 2: Build out an infrastructure using public cloud resources for new workloads or migrating existing on-premises workloads. Phase 3: Refactor applications to take advantage of public cloud scale and innovations, including more advanced public cloud services. Rubrik was born in the cloud era providing a web-scale platform from day one. Our very first product natively integrated with AWS with a hybrid-cloud operating model, and we’re taking that journey with you. The platform use cases expand as you move up the pyramid of phases in Tim’s diagram…

Rubrik Intelligent Data Tiering Helps Customers Optimize Microsoft Azure Storage Consumption

The advantage of automation for archiving your protected data in storage tiers is really about one thing – optimizing storage consumption costs. Storing data in Azure Storage Archive or Cool tiers saves costs for enterprises but requires time and effort to retrieve or move that data. Many Rubrik customers store snapshots, or point-in-time images of their workloads, in the public cloud using blob storage. Storage tiering in Azure requires the use of General Purpose v2 (GPv2) storage accounts. Here is a table of the General Purpose v2 storage tiers: * Data housed in the Premium tier cannot be migrated to any other tiers currently Let’s dive a bit deeper into the use cases for utilizing this tiering. For example, suppose you have an audit requirement to store certain year-end financial data for up to 24 months and make the data readily accessible for up to 6 months. That data will be initially stored in the Hot tier for the first 6 months, then moved to the Archive tier, where it will remain until it expires in 17 months and is finally retired. Example use case for using Archive storage tiering In this scenario, tiering is optimal for satisfying retrieval and…

Expanding our Technology Solutions with Microsoft, NetApp, and VMware

At Rubrik, we build to make our customers’ work easier across their entire infrastructure, especially as they move to hybrid and multi-cloud environments. Customer feedback drives our product roadmap, and we heavily invest in our partners to deliver critical solutions that solve the biggest enterprise data management challenges.  We’re always looking for new ways to innovate and expand our partner ecosystem and are thrilled to introduce three upcoming solutions! Here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come: Protecting Azure NetApp Files with Rubrik Unstructured data brings about new data management challenges. In many large enterprises, the size of unstructured data is in double or even triple-digit petabytes and continues to grow exponentially. The sheer volume of data and number of files, which can run into the billions, makes it difficult for backup software to identify which files to protect, as the entire file system needs to be examined for changes since the last backup. This can result in horribly slow backups, failed backup jobs, and unfavorable resource consumption. To solve these challenges, we recently introduced Rubrik and NetApp StorageGRID, which enables users to automate data lifecycle management at cloud scale. We also introduced our first-to-market integration with SnapDiff APIs (expected…

Thanks to our partnership with DataStax, Rubrik Mosaic utilizes a new utility purpose-built by DataStax to offer support for DSE 6. If you’re considering an upgrade to DataStax Enterprise, you’ll want Mosaic 3.1. DataStax Enterprise Search is a popular feature, particularly for customers implementing catalogs, document repositories, ad-hoc reporting engines, and other applications that rely heavily on indexing. DataStax uses Apache Solr in the backend to enable search operations on any existing DSE table by creating a Solr index in DSE. With Mosaic 3.1, customers no longer need to rebuild…
