Designing A CloudOut to Amazon S3 Solution

The majority of Rubrik customers take advantage of our CloudOut capability to archive backup data to a public cloud service provider, often as a replacement for tape. Cloud offers better response times than tape in the event that you must restore data from archive. This solution provides a cost-effective approach and reliable long-term retention. Through the lens of Zaffre Fashion Group (Zaffre), our own field-tested fictional enterprise based on how customers commonly use our product, we’ll examine how a CloudOut to Amazon S3 solution can be architected. Solution Overview As part of their cloud-first strategy, Zaffre leverages CloudOut to support compliance, eliminate tape, and meet long-term retention requirements. Cloud adoption efforts began in 2017 by selecting AWS as the cloud archive location to store on-premises data for a regulatory period.  The long-term retention location is specified as a cloud archive within the Rubrik SLA Domain. This means that once a workload is protected, Rubrik automatically ensures that: Snapshots that have exceeded their local retention threshold are marked for archive. Snapshots and metadata are uploaded to the archive location. Snapshots are marked for expiry once the archive retention threshold is exceeded. Archive consolidation efficiently manages and removes expired snapshots. The following…

How We Use CloudOn & CloudOut to Protect Developer Environments

For many organizations, drawing up an effective Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and Disaster Recovery (DR) plan is imperative to ensuring business operations don’t stop during an unplanned outage, security threat, or attack. Most strategies focus on recovering mission-critical data and systems such as financial, customer, and ERP applications. In addition, many organizations, including those whose main business is developing software, often consider revenue-impacting systems and data as mission-critical, while software development is an afterthought.  Just like any other tech company, Rubrik is susceptible to unpredictable outages or disasters that can affect its on-premises or cloud infrastructure. That’s why we have a broader definition of mission-critical data and systems that includes our development work environments. We make recovering them a key part of our DR plan so we can continue to develop software in any scenario.  In order to achieve this, we use two powerful features of Rubrik Cloud Data Management: CloudOut: Archives backed up data to object storage platforms such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, and Azure Blob Storage for quick access and retrieval. CloudOut as a standalone feature might sound like elastic storage on cloud for quick and easy access, but when coupled with CloudOn, it becomes an…

Encrypting Your Data in the Cloud: Rubrik CloudOut with Azure Blob Storage

In a previous post, I discussed the role of data encryption as a critical component of any company’s security posture and the potential pitfalls of not using encryption properly. This is magnified when you are talking about storing data outside of customer data centers in public cloud storage repositories such as Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage. Since the beginning, security has been a key pillar of Rubrik’s Cloud Data Management platform. Our engineers have built security into every aspect of the platform, from end-to-end encryption to immutable backups. Naturally, this obsession with security extends to our integration with the cloud. As customers adopt the cloud, many are leveraging our CloudOut capability for long-time archive in the public cloud, often as a replacement for tape. This approach is typically more cost effective, more reliable, and offers better response times in the event that data restoration is required. I recently spelled out how Rubrik secures data that is sent to the cloud by encrypting data both in transit and at rest using a variety of methodologies with AWS. This post gives a more in-depth look at Rubrik’s main principles for encrypting data in the cloud, including using the…
