LKAB is a state-owned mining company that operates in the rich iron ore deposits located near the towns of Kiruna and Malmberget in the northern part of Sweden. The company produced 26.9 Mt of iron ore products in 2018 and have plans to increase production by 5% per year through 2021. The company takes environmental impact seriously and is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 12% by 2021, as well as limiting the amount of nitrogen emitted by the mining process.
“IT is a critical component of modern mining operations—perhaps even more so due to the type of mining we perform,” said Robert Pohjanen, IT Architect at LKAB. “We employ a deep mine that is 1.3 km underground. This type of mine is more costly to run than our competitors’ open mines, forcing us to be efficient and agile as a business. We utilize technology extensively in the mine, ranging from fiber optics for monitoring to equipping the entire site with Wi-Fi.”
“Our small IT department supports 4,000 employees in Sweden and 2,000 employees internationally. We are always looking at the total cost of operating our technology solutions and strive to automate processes wherever possible by employing cutting-edge, best-in-class technologies like Rubrik,” said Pohjanen.

Millions of Swedish kronor in downtime avoidance with Rubrik
“There are several applications which are vital to the financial well-being of our operation,” said Pohjanen. “The first is an in-house program that tracks all aspects of the mining production line. It’s also used in planning drilling activities and analyzing data produced in the mine. If this application failed and could not be restored, we would be forced to shut down the production line within 24-48 hours. It is extremely costly to restart the line, so a failure to restore this app is unacceptable.”
“Our people tracking system is equally important to our operation and very costly if it is unavailable,” said Pohjanen. “We need to ensure that the mine is clear of people before commencing our nightly blasting activity. Failure of this monitoring system can result in shutting down blasting operations for the night at a cost of 10 000 000 SEK (1,000,000 USD). We are confident that Rubrik is protecting our critical databases, including the Oracle and SQL Server systems, which drive these essential applications and can quickly recover if needed.”

Unified data management and cloud mobility
“Rubrik Edge has proved to be a great fit for our small, remote locations,” said Pohjanen. “We have three facilities in Sweden, in addition to subsidiary offices across the globe. Edge allows us to use existing hardware at these locations and manage their data from our central site. This has drastically streamlined our restore process. Previously, we had to locate the backup before starting a restore. Now, we can quickly recover any user’s data with Rubrik’s Google-like search.”
LKAB was also unable to leverage the cloud with their legacy, tape-based solution. “We were able to move to the cloud in 5 minutes with Rubrik’s seamless Azure integration,” said Pohjanen. “We keep backups onsite for 10 days with Rubrik, then archive to Azure. Our retention policies demand that we archive data for 365 days, and all financial records are kept for seven years to comply with Swedish regulations.”

LKAB is protecting their 98% virtualized environment with Rubrik, including physical Oracle and virtual SQL and Linux.
90%+ management time savings
“We used to spend eight hours per day managing backups, which has now been reduced to four hours per week on average. As a result, we have gained 234 additional days of productivity (the equivalent of over 700 000 SEK) back to the business and reallocated two staff members to more strategic projects. This has allowed our team to take a more proactive (instead of reactive) approach overall.”
95% faster ticket resolution times
“With our legacy solution, only Level 2 technicians could perform restores. Rubrik is so easy to use that Level 1 technicians can own this task, decreasing overall ticket resolution times. Previously, restore tickets could take an average of 5 hours to resolve, whereas now it only takes 15 minutes.”
Full visibility with Rubrik Polaris GPS
“We have many locations across the globe. Rubrik Polaris GPS allows us to manage our environment and track all our data from a single pane of glass.”
75% reduction in data center footprint
“We’ve gone from 24U to 6U in our data center with Rubrik.”
Seamless integration with Nutanix AHV
“Rubrik provides end-to-end data management for Nutanix, which means that we can access data instantly, automate protection policies, and manage our AHV workloads. With Nutanix and Rubrik, we feel confident that our mission-critical applications are protected.”
