The Beauty of Immutability

Imagine one or more of your systems is unavailable because of some malicious attack, whether a nasty virus, ransomware, or sabotage from a disgruntled employee. No worries, these things happen —  you’ll recover from backup. Except you discover that your backups have been compromised in the same manner (this has happened). This is usually where the term air gap gets dropped. Someone will say, “you need a truly offline backup — tape! There’s no way ransomware can get into a tape backup!” While that’s true, how long does it take to recover from tape stored in a land somewhere far, far away? If a backup takes so long to restore that there’s major financial or business impact, does it actually exist? Realistically, there are ways to protect your data stored by backup systems even without this gap. I recently wrote a blog post about immutable infrastructures, but compute infrastructures are not the only way that immutability matters in the data center. Immutable, by definition, means the state is set or inflexible once constructed. In other words, it cannot be changed. The goal is to build a more reliable automated compute infrastructure in order to enable stable continuous delivery. Data has become…

Rubrik & Cloudian: Efficient Data Management for the Growing Enterprise

Managing data growth outside of primary storage has become increasingly complex with legacy architectures. Data centers are strapped with outdated hardware and software solutions. As enterprises become more and more reliant on data protection, a need for an affordable management solution has never been greater. Rubrik and Cloudian streamline how enterprises manage backups and long-term data retention in hybrid cloud environments. Rubrik provides unified end-to-end data management with capabilities such as instant data access, automated protection, and easy orchestration across multi-cloud environments. Enterprises around the world rely on Rubrik to securely manage their data, physical or virtual, across all locations – on-premises, edge of the data center, and cloud. Rubrik delivers a secure and intelligent on-ramp to Cloudian HyperStore. Cloudian HyperStore is designed for enterprise customers and service providers in data-intensive markets where unstructured data demands strain the limits of modern data centers. The solution serves as a highly-scalable on-premises target for data protection with support for policy-based migration to the cloud. Our platform was built from the ground up with simplicity in mind. Rubrik’s integration with Cloudian extends this focus while meeting customers’ business requirements around backup, archive, and disaster recovery. The joint solution delivers unlimited scale, security, and…

Data Protection for the Changing Enterprise

The modern enterprise is changing. We are moving towards a world of containers, API-first architectures, and cloud-native applications; the latter two are discussed by Chris Wahl, Rubrik’s Chief Technologist, in a previous post. Enterprise technology is moving from email to Slack, relational databases to NoSQL, and more. But not every company is moving at warp speed, and both Oracle and Microsoft are still relevant in almost every data center. While Rubrik protects the enterprise on-premises, we are far more than a converged data management hardware appliance. We support multiple architectures beyond hardware via Rubrik Edge, our software-only appliance for ROBO, and Cloud Cluster for cloud-native apps and public cloud data protection. Rubrik is evolving and growing rapidly to meet cutting-edge business requirements while maintaining a Google-like, web-scale architecture and striking simplicity. Let’s Talk Applications! Tim Carr is right (don’t tell him I said that) — DBAs typically do not like to step outside of their comfort zone or native toolsets. Luckily, with our new Oracle integration, Rubrik provides its core benefits such as immutability and policy-driven management while integrating with native Oracle capabilities. Our approach is to integrate with RMAN, which provides agentless support (yay!) but still allows Oracle DBAs to use…

End-to-End Data Management with Nutanix AHV

Last week, we announced Rubrik Alta, our ninth and most significant product release. Alta brings many cool, innovative additions. One of the items that I’m most excited about is support for Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) virtual machines. Rubrik now provides end-to-end data management for Nutanix. So, users can securely access data instantly, automate protection policies, and manage their AHV workloads. Rubrik has long supported VMware vSphere on the Nutanix platform. But Rubrik is excited to extend its partnership with Nutanix to be one of the first platforms to support native AHV backup and recovery. Alta’s support for AHV, as well as Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware, enables customers to orchestrate application data across multi-hypervisor and multi-cloud environments. Here’s how it works: Rubrik capitalizes on enhancements to Acropolis Block Services (ABS), such as Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) support. As you probably know, we’re all about the APIs. Rubrik leverages Nutanix’s new-and-improved REST 3.0 API to interact with Nutanix Changed Region Tracking (CRT) and query the changed metadata regions given any two snapshots of a virtual disk or VM. This approach is indispensable for taking incremental backups because of its efficiency. It’s also useful for taking full backups since the API identifies regions that are zeroed, therefore saving on…

Heartbroken by vSphere Data Protection?

Has the end of VMware’s vSphere Data Protection left you spurned? Getting dumped hurts. So, take your time and play the field. Just know that when you are ready to move on to a more serious relationship, Rubrik is ready for you. To add insult to injury, VMware is offering three years of Avamar Virtual Edition licensing for free. . .as long as you have less than 4 TB; otherwise, you have to pay. And, regardless of how much data you need to protect, you must continue to pay maintenance costs. Ouch! What is this – alimony? Love really can hurt. But it doesn’t have to! There are no limits to Rubrik’s love.  Have more than 4 TB of protected data? No worries! Rubrik uses a linear scale-out approach to solve data growth concerns. Simply add more briks to accommodate your company’s data growth. VMware will continue to focus on the vSphere Storage APIs – Data Protection (VADP), which Rubrik leverages to backup your virtual machines. This is great news, but your company may not use 100% VMware virtual machines. Fear not–we’re diversifying our portfolio by providing support for physical Windows and Linux servers, as well as Microsoft SQL databases. Speaking…
