More and more healthcare organizations are driving digital transformation as they look to improve the patient experience, reduce costs, and streamline processes. The downside, however, is that this shift is making healthcare organizations even more lucrative to cyberattackers–especially when combined with the volume of computer-stored patient information and EHR data. Healthcare remains one of the top industries targeted by ransomware and saw a 350% increase in Q4 2019 alone.

You’ve heard us say it before. Backups are a critical defense against ransomware. However, advanced ransomware is now targeting backups, which only increases the chances of ransom payout as organizations lose their last line of defense. Rubrik was designed to make backups immune to ransomware and accelerate recovery after an attack. Data stored in Rubrik is never available in a Read/Write format, preventing your backups from being compromised or deleted. In the event of an attack, quickly recover to the most recent clean state with just a few clicks–minimizing downtime and data loss.

Here are two stories of how healthcare organizations are leveraging Rubrik to up-level their ransomware remediation strategy and protect critical data.

Rubrik Gives Southern Nevada Health District Peace of Mind

The Southern Nevada Health District is the local public health agency for Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada. In addition to providing primary care and clinical services, the agency is responsible for regulating EMTs and ambulances, inspecting hotels and restaurants, operating mosquito and vector control programs, maintaining vital records, and conducting education programs for the area. With more than 42 million visitors to Las Vegas every year, SNHD’s attention to health extends beyond the region’s 2.2 million residents.

Data protection and availability is critical for SNHD, especially with the access to citizen data such as health clinic records and PII; losing access to this data could significantly impact both patients and staff. Tired of dealing with unreliable, complex data management, SNHD switched to Rubrik, citing ease of use and cloud capabilities as driving factors. Aware that healthcare organizations are high-targets for ransomware attacks, the agency also found peace of mind with Rubrik’s native immutability and ability to quickly recover data. As Jason Frame, Chief Information Officer, explains, “It’s important to the health of our patients that if we ever have an attack, we can quickly and easily get back up and running with Rubrik.”

Kern Medical Center Quickly Recovers 100% of Protected Systems

Kern Medical Center is a leading Central Valley healthcare organization and prides itself on providing unparalleled service to patience. Located in Bakersfield, California, the center includes a modern 200+ bed public hospital, a comprehensive offering of primary care and specialty clinics, and a large body of highly-skilled doctors, nurses, technicians, and other health-care providers.

Kern Medical Center was attacked by ransomware in June 2019 that infiltrated their environment and began encrypting production data. The attack was discovered after an hour when users reported they couldn’t access their systems. Using Rubrik, they were able to recover 100% of the impacted systems within minutes, including recovering their business-critical electronic medical record system. Post-attack, Kern Medical Center moved more of their legacy systems to Rubrik to protect against potential future attacks, citing immutable backups as a major driver in this decision.
