If there’s anything that years of consulting with enterprise clients has taught me, it’s that the world of technology continues to accelerate through iteration after iteration of new architectures, models, and solutions at a pace that is difficult to grasp. If you follow Rubrik, it’s hard to miss that we’re focused on enabling automation in the datacenter. We built an API into Rubrik from the very beginning and frequently talk about automation — whether in blog posts, customer discussions, or presentations. As 2017 begins, we plan to expand this focus. Using Automation to Validate Applications and Services in Rubrik Backups

The ability to restore files, folders, applications, and entire servers is the ultimate goal of data protection. With that in mind, there are a lot of checks in place to validate that all source data has been correctly stored within the Rubrik Cloud Data Management (CDM) fabric. This includes CRCs to ward against corruption, over-the-wire encryption to prevent tampering, and the use of erasure coding to opportunistically place data across hardware components to avoid single points of failure. In addition, it’s a good idea to validate that a backup can be restored. The best method is to perform a restore of the data to ensure that whatever is required – be it files, folders, applications, or entire servers – can be presented back to the users. Traditionally, this has been clunky. Solutions that offer such workflows are often quite slow to complete and limited in scope. Plus, they operate in a closed-source orchestration engine that is tightly coupled to the solution itself. PowerShell and RESTful APIs – Making Backup Awesome Again

The virtualization world has long been singing the praises of the “abstract, pool, and automate” goal. Put simply, it meant separating the application from hardware, forming a fabric of resources, and automating the consumption of those resources for applications. The key focus is the application and how it can be made a first class citizen in the data center. However, the automation of tasks has traditionally been slower to enter the world of enterprise infrastructure. I attribute this to vendors using proprietary or closed protocols while also lacking a solid, simple to use, and consumable API that enables a rich ecosystem of task automation. On top of this, administrators and engineers are burdened with keeping the data center operational and don’t have the luxury of codifying a plethora of workflows using handfuls of different programming languages. New vRealize Orchestrator Workflows for Enhancing Your Rubrik Experience

One of my favorite topics of discussion is hearing how folks are embracing the world of Rubrik’s Converged Data Management to tie in our RESTful APIs with other systems for end-to-end automation. One such system is VMware’s vRealize Orchestrator (vRO) which was released as a community focused project on Flowgrab over half a year ago. Since then, we’ve added a lot more to the product across two major releases, such as replication, new form factors, and a plethora of user experience enhancements. This has a direct correlation on our API maturity in terms of functionality, available resources, and what can be done to the data protection fabric. I’m here to share the next evolution of our vRO Plugin. Our very own Matt Altimar, who has over a decade of experience as a Senior Server Administrator building and maintaining large enterprise data centers, has constructed a new open source project on GitHub with a ton of new Rubrik workflows. These are all compatible with release 2.0 of our product and sync up nicely with a vRO deployment. Welcome to the third post in the Converged Data Management series: API-Driven Architecture. To best understand how this property impacts the modern data center, it’s important to take a step back and view how today’s services – meaning the various number of servers that construct an application offered to the business or its clients – are created, consumes, and retired. This is often referred to as lifecycle management.As a service is instantiated, there are a number of lifecycle milestones to reach. These include the details needed to request a service from a portal or catalog, the provisioning tasks to build the service, various care and feeding events while the service runs, and ultimately the retiring and archival aspects of the service. More often than not, these milestones are wrapped into various orchestration engines and front-ended by a Cloud Management Portal (CMP) for administrative and tenant based consumption. In other scenarios, there are still automation workflows being utilized by way of point-and-click scripts and customization tasks.
