Building Automated Test/Dev Environments with Rubrik

IT environments can get complex. So, it’s only natural that trying to mimic a production environment as close as possible in a test environment (why else would you build it?) can get equally complex. You often don’t have the same exact resources available for test and dev as you do for production, which makes it additionally challenging. As a developer (and tester), you don’t want to be hindered by the shortcomings of the infrastructure (hence the popularity of consuming public cloud resources on-demand). Equally, IT infrastructure folks want to deliver the best experience possible for their internal consumers, so they look for ways to introduce more flexibility into the environment. One aspect of this can be automation. It is a way to potentially speed up delivery of resources, ensure a consistent service, reduce errors, and avoid additional interruptions, leading to increased productivity on both ends of the equation. So what if there was hidden potential deep inside your IT infrastructure that could help out in this regard? I’m talking about backup data — data that typically sits unused in your environment, consuming space and resources until called upon to provide restores that will (fingers crossed) return you back to operation…

Rubrik Brings Adaptive Data Consistency to vSphere Virtual Machines

At Rubrik, every product release aims to add capabilities that will address our customers’ current pain points with enterprise data management. We started out by protecting VMware vSphere environments, and now support more than 20 platforms. While we are aggressively proliferating to multiple platforms, we are equally focused on refining our current solutions based on real-world customer stories. One such innovation is  adaptive data consistency  for virtual machines — a capability that drastically improves the lives of enterprise backup admins. Before diving into adaptive data consistency, let’s go through the basics. Data consistency in recovery points is broadly classified into three categories: inconsistent, crash-consistent, and app-consistent. An inconsistent recovery point is taken with zero pre-work. It is not suitable for data sets that contain complex and interdependent relationships, as only data captured on disk is backed up. The in-memory changes are not captured, so it won’t be a true representation of the data in the system for that point in time. A crash-consistent recovery point, when restored, gives you the state of the data from the time of the backup. All the data is captured at the same time, but I/O operations and transactions in process may not be captured. For…

API Orchestration Based on Real-Time Weather Forecasts

Information is knowledge — we’ve known that for centuries. When it comes to meteorological events, the more informed you are about them, the more preparation you can take. This especially holds true in our data-driven era in which a service outage can be detrimental to a business. One example of this is during a hurricane. Suppose a hurricane is headed to your state, with forecasted winds great than 100 MPH. You’d enter “high alert mode” and take every precaution necessary to protect your family and valuable possessions. What if this same human instinct could be orchestrated in your on-premises data center — without you having to even think about it? That’s where the power of API comes in. Rubrik places simplicity at the forefront, which is one reason our engineers chose to create an API-first architecture. Even our HTML5 interface consumes API endpoints. Our rich suite of RESTful APIs makes it easy to create customized workflows, and both our customers and partners have wowed us with their creativity. Rubrik’s API-first architecture goes beyond automating day-to-day data protection. It offers intelligent data management that can be leveraged for predictive capabilities, self-service, and more. I’m honored to call Florida my home and…

For CIOs, Focus on the Service Experience is Paramount

Four years ago, I sat down with Frank Slootman, now Former CEO of ServiceNow and Data Domain, and shared my idea of re-architecting backup and recovery from the ground up to manage the data explosion in a cloudy world. Backup and recovery was overdue for a technology refresh. There was opportunity to bring the power of public clouds to backup, expand the role of backup data into a business asset for test/dev and analytics, and replace the traditional cumbersome architecture and user experience with one that was radically simple and infinitely scalable. Fast forward to ten product releases and 600+ employees, Frank and I caught up on why he invested in Rubrik and how our vision resonated with him. During the discussion, we traded notes on where IT is headed and what’s top of mind for CIOs. Four out of the five business days, I’m usually found on the road, meeting with customers around the world across all industries. After countless trips, I have noticed a clear trend in my discussions with CIOs – the CIO of today is starkly different from the CIO of yesterday. They are business strategists and spend their time figuring how best to leverage technology…

Automatically Provision Self-service Data Management In Your Cloud with Rubrik and SovLabs

Rubrik puts simplicity at the forefront. The easy-to-use GUI is a Rubrik hallmark feature making available quick data protection, instant recovery, and self-service data management. Users can manage their backup services interactively or through the simple, fully-featured automation interface provided by RESTful APIs in order to manage Rubrik’s SLA policy engine. Cloud-scale deployments, however, require automation that spans not only multiple products and services such as name services like DNS and Active Directory, but also multiple product and service categories, including (but by no means limited to) the aforementioned name services, address management, load balancing and, of course, backup services. Fortunately, this is exactly where Rubrik’s API-first architecture really shines, particularly when combined with the power of VMware vRealize Automation (vRA). That said, until recently, making Rubrik’s advanced capabilities available in vRA required administrators to develop, support, and maintain custom integration code. This could delay schedules, increase cost and risk, and reduce agility with every update to deployed technology. Fortunately, SovLabs has recently released a new Backup-as-a-Service Module for vRA that navigates this crucial “last mile” by making the full set of Rubrik data management services directly available from within vRA. With the SovLabs solution, after a simple four-step installation,…

Data Protection’s Day Off

Remember the 1986 movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? The premise is about a high school teen named Ferris Bueller who decided to skip school for a day and have the time of his life. In the late 1980s, tape media was the king of the Backup and Recovery world, and hard disk was still a newbie typically only used as a staging area for fast recovery. Fast forward to today in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in which data is king and the life blood of almost all organizations. We are at the point where data protection and cloud administrators now have an opportunity like Ferris Bueller to sleep better at night and maybe even get a “day off” by automating the workflows of their Backup and Recovery tasks and processes. Now it is your turn to have a day off with Rubrik’s API-Driven Cloud Data Management (CDM) fabric. Backups on Autopilot Autopilot describes the ability to drive the trajectory of an object without “hands-on” control. Rubrik provides a similar benefit by controlling your copy data’s trajectory without constant manual efforts like other legacy backup products. One of the top quantifiable business benefits of Rubrik is that it only takes…

Elenia Delivers Instant Recovery for Business Continuity with Rubrik

Elenia is the second largest electricity distribution company in Finland, supplying household, corporate, and public sector customers in over 100 municipalities throughout Finland. Antti Laakso, IT Specialist at Elenia, discusses how his team leverages Rubrik for time-saving backup management and instant recovery of mission-critical systems. Tell me about your role and the IT environment at Elenia. Elenia supplies power and heat to 420,000 residential, industrial, and community customers in Finland. We are leading the smart electricity networks field by integrating power distribution and data systems into a smart electricity distribution grid to provide real-time information. At Elenia, I am responsible for managing VMware backups and storage. Currently, we protect about 400 VMs with Rubrik in a fully-virtualized environment. An eight-person IT team supports approximately 400 employees, as well as our entire customer base. What challenges were you experiencing with your previous solution? Prior to Rubrik, we relied on multiple legacy solutions, which was increasingly complex and time-consuming to manage. If the business wanted tight RTOs and RPOs, it would have been tough to meet them. It could take one day to restore a mission-critical system, which negatively impacted our business. Additionally, there were times when backups failed or we couldn’t…

Top 3 Use Cases for Rubrik with Zerto

In my first post, I’d like to share some of the cool use cases for using Rubrik with Zerto. For the uninitiated, Zerto provides hypervisor-based replication and recovery automation across hypervisors and clouds. The solution delivers RPOs of seconds and RTOs of minutes. Zerto is the logical evolution of storage-based replication/CDP with separate orchestration solutions. Similarly, Rubrik is the logical evolution of data protection and management software that frees your data from underlying infrastructure. If your primary use case is replacing SAN replication and SRM, then Zerto can help simplify and future proof your environment. Likewise, if your primary use case is replacing legacy backup hardware and software, then Rubrik is a no brainer to simplify and future proof. Now that we have established that these are complimentary solutions, here are my top 3 use cases for using them together: 1. Simplify End-to-end Data Protection The first thing users love about both Rubrik and Zerto is that they simplify the complex, enterprise-class backup and replication technologies. In a nutshell, this means that mere mortals with no professional services can achieve the highest levels of data protection assurance with ease. Rubrik delivers the best converged backup solution on the market. It can start ingesting your data to…

Top 3 Mistakes to Avoid When Automating Your Business

Businesses worldwide are leveraging automation to deliver services at a lower cost with a higher level of customer satisfaction. The return on investment for automation is well documented, both in financial benefit and higher customer retention rates. But not all efforts to implement automation are created equal, and many companies stumble to meet their goal. Integrating automation into a business requires planning and strategy. This post walks through the top pitfalls to avoid when implementing automation. Recreating the Workflow The first mistake many businesses make is automating the steps of an existing workflow. This may seem like a shortcut since the workflow provides a blueprint for the steps needed to achieve the end result. But workflows created around manual processes focus more on previously performed tasks than on the entire problem. I experienced this firsthand while developing a process to automate billing based on cloud usage. The existing workflow had many steps that required manually altering the output of the previous step and reformatting it before sending it to the next person in the chain. This process created a significant margin of error, as even minor changes caused the entire chain to break. This leads to our next major pitfall.…
