Built-in Immutability for Cyber Resiliency

Imagine one or more of your systems is unavailable because of some malicious attack, whether a nasty virus, ransomware, or sabotage from a disgruntled employee. No worries, these things happen —  you’ll recover from backup. Except you discover that your backups have been compromised in the same manner. This is usually where the term air gap gets dropped. Someone will say, “you need a truly offline backup — tape! There’s no way ransomware can get into a tape backup!” While that’s true, how long does it take to recover from tape stored in a land somewhere far, far away? If a backup takes so long to restore that there’s major financial or business impact, does it actually exist? Realistically, there are ways to protect your data stored by backup systems even without this gap.  I previously wrote a blog post about immutable infrastructures, but compute infrastructures are not the only way that immutability matters in the data center. Immutable, by definition, means the state is set or inflexible once constructed. In other words, it cannot be changed. The goal is to build a more reliable automated compute infrastructure in order to enable stable continuous delivery. Data is becoming more and more…

Better NAS Backup RPO with Changelist Snapshots

Although NDMP has long been the de facto approach for protecting NAS data, some limitations have led Rubrik to choose a different approach from day 1, leveraging NFS and SMB instead.  To ensure that customers are able to reliably protect their data and recover quickly from data corruption and data loss, Rubrik takes an approach that obviates the need for complex NDMP implementations. Three-phase Approach NAS protection with Rubrik utilizes a three-phase approach. Each phase is optimized using modern techniques such as snapshot API integration, data partitioning, and parallel file streaming. The Rubrik three-phase approach for NAS protection includes: Scan: Rubrik identifies which files need to be protected for full or incremental backups. Fetch: Rubrik takes the list of files from the Scan phase and reads them over the NAS protocol. Copy: Rubrik compresses, encrypts, and writes the data to either the Rubrik cluster or, using NAS Direct Archive, to an archive location on-premises or in the cloud. NAS Data Scan File scanning has historically been the biggest bottleneck for NAS backup performance. This challenge has only grown as the amount of data has grown. Previous approaches, such as image-level backups, have increased backup performance by avoiding file scanning altogether.…

How Automation Can Advance Your Career

Working in IT keeps you on your toes as you constantly evaluate, test, and implement new technologies and applications. In many ways, IT environments are getting more difficult to manage and protect due to rapid data growth, the increase in available tools and integrations, and the rise of cloud adoption. In addition, IT organizations are now (finally!) often considered strategic business partners as data becomes more valuable and business-critical. This shift also means that IT admins are often asked to do more with less, which is why many organizations are leaning on automation. And (despite popular belief) creating scripts and automated tooling isn’t just for developers. Any IT professional—whether you’re an entry-level backup admin or seasoned DBA—can leverage automation. It’s a great way to meet your goals and advance your skillset. To give you a little inspiration, I can still remember exactly where I was and what process I automated for the first time. It was a fully automated NetApp Clustered Data ONTAP upgrade process that included creating a temporary HTTP server that could be used in the field. I also remember, looking back at that specific piece of automation, how rudimentary it was compared to what I’m doing today.…

How to Protect Mission-Critical Oracle Databases with Rubrik

When it comes to protecting mission-critical Oracle databases, many DBAs have traditionally turned to Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN).  However, with thousands of options and hundreds of scripts, protecting Oracle databases at scale can be a challenge for even the most seasoned DBA.  This blog wiIl explore how Rubrik Cloud Data Management simplifies the protection of Oracle databases by enabling DevOps-centric automation, instant recovery, self-service clones, and streamlined collaboration between DBAs and backup admins.   Automate Oracle Data Protection with Rubrik Backup Service and SLA Domain Policies For organizations looking for a hands-off approach to Oracle data protection, Rubrik provides the Rubrik Backup Service (RBS) and SLA Domain Policies. RBS is a lightweight connector that can be installed on either Linux or UNIX hosts and auto-discovers all of the Oracle real application clusters (RAC), hosts, databases, and tablespaces within the environment.  Once the entire Oracle environment is discovered, users can leverage Rubrik’s intelligent and automated SLA policy engine to create declarative policies that define backup frequency, retention duration, and desired location. After an SLA policy has been mapped, Oracle databases will be automatically protected, replicated, and archived. “One of the biggest advantages with Rubrik over legacy solutions is its policy-based management for…

Rubrik SLA Domain: Settings, Ops, Considerations

SLA Domains Explained In the data protection world, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) define protection levels for workloads, availability targets, and objects that are crucial to a company. Collecting this information, implementing it, and staying compliant with the SLA is usually a tedious and difficult process. Rubrik uses SLA Domains to make those SLAs easier to achieve.  SLA Domains are comprised of these three components: Snapshot protection and retention  Replication  Archival When combined, these components protect and help manage the lifecycle of your most critical data. SLA Domains can be set to align with your company’s own SLAs, making compliance incredibly simple. Additionally, Rubrik’s SLA Domain construct is declarative in nature, allowing for a set it and forget it style of implementation. While it may seem like a small thing to use declarative policies, there is a major difference between old-style imperative backup jobs and Rubrik’s declarative SLA Domains. To understand the difference, imagine a situation in which you want to give your friend a LEGO set for them to build. The imperative approach would be to sit down with your friend and tell them, step-by-step, exactly how to construct the model. It would be far simpler, and faster, to take…

IT and Sports: A Tale of Three Teams

Professional sports are big business. With teams looking for an edge both on and off the field, many clubs are embracing advancements in technology and big data to provide the best possible game-day experiences for players and fans. Not only is data being used to create championship-winning strategies, it’s also leveraged to better understand fan relations and ROIs and to gain insight into athletic performance during training sessions. This shift has led to the front offices of many franchises to embrace best-of-breed IT technologies that not only protect sensitive information, but help them unlock new business value from it. Tampa Bay Rays Hit It Out-of-the-Park with Instant Data Recovery From recruiting top athletes to game management, American baseball pioneered the use of data for on-field success. Many teams, like the Tampa Bay Rays, have scaled their IT infrastructure accordingly to store and manage critical statistics, including past season metrics, individual player performances, and other crucial data points. The Rays leverage this data to create reports that influence game plans and day-to-day business operations. As critical as data is for The Rays, managing it wasn’t always easy. The IT team was bogged down by fragmented, cumbersome backups and slow restores. To…

The Myth of Boring Backup

Am I crazy for thinking backup is exciting? Prior to joining Rubrik, I was a Gartner analyst for 20+ years and spent the majority of my time there covering primary storage and backup and recovery. As a storage analyst, I saw the consistently high client inquiry volumes on backup and recovery and decided to switch my coverage to this area. Some of my colleagues shook their heads and couldn’t understand why I wanted to cover a technology area that was so “boring.” To me, backup is not boring; it’s the biggest pain point in the entire data center infrastructure! It has often become a huge burden that slows down an organization’s quest for agility. As I studied the market and technologies, I realized that the pain was caused by too little innovation. All the major enterprise backup solutions only had incremental improvements in the past 20 years and couldn’t meet the new backup and recovery performance requirements. As a result of relentless data growth, backup windows have become longer and longer, while recovery is too slow to meet the requirement of new digital initiatives and changing expectations. Today, backup has become one of the most exciting fields because it’s experiencing…
