How to Not Be A Victim of Infrastructure with Rubrik Live Mount

Since day one, Rubrik was built with the user in mind, delivering ultimate simplicity and comprehensive data protection at enterprise scale. That’s why we leverage our own platform to manage and protect our mission-critical data, allowing us to experience firsthand how our technology accelerates product development and automation. However, just like any other organization, we at Rubrik are still susceptible to unpredictable hiccups and disasters. We recently encountered one of these issues during a product release cycle. With Rubrik, we were able to quickly meet our time-to-market goals and minimize business disruption and engineering productivity loss. Here’s our story of how Rubrik came to the rescue: At Rubrik, one of our core values is velocity, and that applies to our engineering teams as well. Our engineering teams use our home-grown orchestration layer to allocate precious infrastructure resources for functional/integration and regression tests, which enables us to deliver quality product at lightning speed. This orchestration layer and its services run on top of an enterprise SAN (hybrid flash-based array) for storing the test data and builds. However, recently, this storage layer behaved erratically, significantly slowing down our build times and release pipelines. Our IT infrastructure teams came to the rescue, quickly…

Planning a Successful Disaster Recovery Strategy

Here at Rubrik, we strive to provide a strong suite of tools that make backup and disaster recovery (DR) as easy as possible. We’ve developed technologies like Live Mount, CloudOut, and CloudOn to help businesses recover quickly from a disaster and minimize downtime. In my experience, technology—no matter how advanced—is only a piece of the DR equation. A fully developed DR plan requires people, process, and technology in order to truly be successful. Here’s a look at some of the top considerations when developing your DR strategy: People First and foremost, you must have the right stakeholders and executive sponsorship sign off on your strategy so that they can go to bat for you when allocating people and resources. Successful DR planning requires time and input from many people across your organization—the larger the company, the more people involved. Your team should be representative of all key areas of your company, with smaller groups concentrated on logistics and operations where necessary. Here are some examples of how to effectively make up your team: Business Unit Stakeholders: Identify critical applications, success criteria, and potential roadblocks. Provide input to other teams as needed. Application Owners/Analysts: Own dependency mapping and success criteria for…

Bare Metal Recovery: The Rubrik Way

While the rage of late has been a shift into more agile and efficient operating models based on DevOps principles, infrastructure-as-code, virtualization, and cloud, the reality is that organizations are still relying on physical on-premises infrastructures to provide services. For many organizations, these physical systems are hosting some of their most mission-critical applications, which means ensuring protection is a business necessity. However, physical servers also present some of the toughest challenges when it comes to data protection. Decoupling data from physical servers and providing an image level, or Bare Metal Recovery (BMR), restore process is much harder without the layer of abstraction hypervisors provide. Rubrik Andes 5.0 seeks to break down these abstraction challenges, providing end-to-end protection around physical Windows servers. Rubrik’s Road to Bare Metal Recovery At Rubrik, we designed our platform to be a unified solution that can protect data regardless of where it lives. We dipped our toes into physical data protection with our third product release,  which offered options for administrators to backup on a fileset level. While this functionality is great at providing support for dump-and-scrape backups or protecting a large set of user-created files, complete system recoveries led to lengthier RTOs. We addressed this…

Drinking Our Own Champagne: Introducing Rubrik on Rubrik

Now, more than ever, IT is transforming from a supportive tool or insurance policy into a strategic business imperative. As someone who has been in the industry for over 20 years, it’s clear to me that we’re at a tipping point at which enterprises must quickly adapt their technologies to drive competitive edge and unlock new business value. I joined Rubrik as CIO last year to build an IT organization that enables the business processes, employee experience, and infrastructure needed to support the company’s unprecedented growth–while also delivering deep business intelligence and keeping us secure. Previously, I led Business Applications at VMware, where I drove IT transformation across people, process, and technology areas to achieve nimble and agile delivery. In other words, I’ve experienced firsthand the unprecedented speed at which data is growing and the challenge of massive data proliferation as we enter the cloud era. Today, CIOs need infrastructure flexibility and a comprehensive platform to manage all of their data, no matter where it resides. Rubrik was designed to address these challenges and has redefined the data protection industry, shifting the perception of what’s possible. That’s why we’re excited to share Rubrik on Rubrik. Using Rubrik to automate, manage,…

Tech Walkthrough: Amazon EC2 Protection with Rubrik

In a previous post, I previewed Rubrik’s support for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) native protection, and it’s been rewarding seeing customers use this capability to protect their AWS workloads. With the exciting announcements recently revealed at AWS re:Invent, this is a good time to walk through some of Rubrik’s Amazon EC2 protection capabilities. Prerequisites First thing you’ll need is an AWS account with some Amazon EC2 instances launched and running in one or more AWS Regions. Note that these instances must be using Amazon Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volumes since Rubrik will be leveraging Amazon EBS snapshots for data protection. On the Rubrik side, you’ll need either a Rubrik instance running on-premises with network connectivity to AWS or a Rubrik Cloud Cluster with access to your AWS account. There is also some preliminary configuration work, detailed in Rubrik documentation, that has to be completed before we can start managing native Amazon EC2 protection: Identify a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and Subnet where the transient Rubirk EC2 instance will be launched. This Rubrik instance will be used for the indexing of Amazon EBS snapshots. Create a Security Group that allows inbound access over TCP through ports 2002 and 7780. This…

Introducing Rubrik Protection for Epic EHR

How confident are you in your Epic EHR data backups? Here at Rubrik, we understand that our healthcare customers rely on their electronic healthcare record (EHR) system for real-time access to patient health data. Any downtime of this mission-critical system would jeopardize the quality of patient care and risk non-compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory requirements. Unfortunately, legacy backup solutions are increasingly stretched by the explosive growth of healthcare data and rising intensity of ransomware and malware attacks. Protecting large EHR systems is difficult, with slow backup and recovery performance potentially compromising patient data availability. Without proper security, backups of production data are equally vulnerable to ransomware attacks. And on top of these security risks, legacy backup systems are complex and require significant management time, often from dedicated specialists. With Andes 5.0, Rubrik addresses these pain points by extending its policy-driven data protection to both physical and virtualized Epic EHR systems. Here are a few of the key differentiators that set Rubrik apart: High-performance backups. Rubrik Cloud Data Management (CDM) accelerates Epic backups with parallel ingestion and an incremental-forever approach, with no impact on the Epic production system. SLA policy-driven automation. Through a single policy engine, backup administrators create and…
