Should Your Data Protection Strategy Go 100% Agentless?

Over the past 30 years, we’ve grown  used to data protection solutions that require backup agents to be deployed within an OS. Historically, no other options were available, and the available solutions were designed to protect mostly physical machines, at least in the x86 world. Most people define  a backup agent (sometimes known as a backup client)  as a piece of software provided by the data protection solution that  performs the actual backup job from within the workload. This job is usually comprised of several tasks, including: Preparing the workload for online backup, which involves quiescing the filesystem and running applications to put them in a consistent state. Identifying new and changed data, such as blocks or files, since the previous backup operation. Processing new data, which might include actions such as deduplication, compression, and encryption. Transporting the backed up data to a backup storage target. Backup agents are deployed, controlled, and maintained by a master server that tells each agent what to do. The master server also collects and stores information about the backed up data, called metadata, and logs everything that happens. This is basically a client-server relationship that requires network communication between the backup infrastructure and each…

The Myth of Boring Backup

Am I crazy for thinking backup is exciting? Prior to joining Rubrik, I was a Gartner analyst for 20+ years and spent the majority of my time there covering primary storage and backup and recovery. As a storage analyst, I saw the consistently high client inquiry volumes on backup and recovery and decided to switch my coverage to this area. Some of my colleagues shook their heads and couldn’t understand why I wanted to cover a technology area that was so “boring.” To me, backup is not boring; it’s the biggest pain point in the entire data center infrastructure! It has often become a huge burden that slows down an organization’s quest for agility. As I studied the market and technologies, I realized that the pain was caused by too little innovation. All the major enterprise backup solutions only had incremental improvements in the past 20 years and couldn’t meet the new backup and recovery performance requirements. As a result of relentless data growth, backup windows have become longer and longer, while recovery is too slow to meet the requirement of new digital initiatives and changing expectations. Today, backup has become one of the most exciting fields because it’s experiencing…

Automate Windows Full Volume Recovery with Rubrik

Can you instantly recover from a catastrophe, data loss event, or crash of your Microsoft Windows system? If you have ever been in this situation before, you may recall that simplicity reigns supreme. To help cope with disasters, systems and backup administrators desire simplified ways to achieve volume-level protection for their Windows environments. If you’re on a quest for a more innovative method that requires less manual effort and provides more flexibility and agility, Rubrik’s Windows Full Volume Protection (FVP) is for you. With Alta 4.2, Rubrik introduces Windows FVP to perform volume-based backup and recovery of the entire system and data drives that reside on physical Windows servers. Admins can now automate full volume recoveries with a process guaranteed to make efforts more efficient. What is Windows Full Volume Protection? Before diving into the benefits of our approach, let’s walk through the basics. Rubrik Windows FVP extends our capabilities to protect Windows components by utilizing our Rubrik Backup Service (RBS), which calls the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to capture crash-consistent snapshots of the volumes, such as: All Drives (C:\, D:\, etc.), including system and data drives Fileset type (NTFS) Volume Size Permissions This extension further enhances our…

In the Eye of the Beholder: Rubrik Alta 4.2

In any new release, there are the major features–the items you mention when asked for a 30-second version of “what’s new.” Rubrik Alta 4.2 is no exception, and we’ve talked a lot about the high-level themes and larger features. Perhaps it’s my IT Operations background, but while I get excited about the banner features, I also find the “smaller” items fascinating. I still remember reading release notes as a customer and seeing a feature or feature improvement that, while minor to many, was hugely impactful and an indication of development maturity. If developer cycles aren’t also put towards improvement to existing features or “minor additions,” that’s not healthy and is especially challenging for current customers. Given that, I’d like to take a few minutes to focus on a few less notable, but still important, 4.2 features. Let’s call them “In the Eye of the Beholder” features. Edge on AHV & Hyper-V I’ve spent a lot of time with customers who have extensive Remote Office / Branch Office (ROBO) architectures. Backup and recovery in these environments can be painful–lack of physical space, tape rotation, budget challenges, performance, and more. While Rubrik in the data center traditionally has a 3 or 4 node minimum,…

AWS EC2 Protection with Rubrik

For most IT professionals, data protection is a difficult and thankless task. Adding to the pain, data protection tools can be even more complex and brittle than manual processes. Take, for example, the protection of virtual machines/instances in the public cloud. The primitives help protect your data, but automating the process often requires cobbling together various scripts and services that have to be constantly maintained. Solving these pain points was a major part of the recent Rubrik Alta 4.2 release. Based on customer demand, we’ve made simplifying the protection of cloud workloads a key benefit of our platform, beginning with Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 instances. In a previous post, I provided an overview of the various AWS primitives, such as EBS snapshots and Amazon Machine Images, that are involved with EC2 instance protection. This post will go under the hood of how Rubrik uses these primitives to automate and simplify protection. What Challenges Are We Solving For? We designed Alta 4.2 to address the top data management challenges we heard from customers and prospects who are running workloads in AWS. This includes those who are new to the public cloud and those who run primarily in the cloud. Here…

Long Live vCloud Director!

Although now focused on service providers, vCloud Director is alive and well, as shown by the #LongLivevCD hashtag on Twitter. vCloud Director (vCD) makes it easy for cloud service providers or managed service providers (MSPs) to manage and operate virtual data centers (VDCs) for multiple consumers or tenants. The solution can automate the creation of VDCs based on consumer resource needs and assign the appropriate policies necessary to maintain a proper allocation of resources. vCD also provides a unique portal for consumers to manage various cloud services and workloads on their own. At Rubrik, we’re excited to further our customers’ abilities to create customized private cloud offerings tailored their environment. Our integration simplifies protection of VMs by recognizing vCD constructs and provides granular recovery at the file-level so that users can choose whether to recover an entire vApp or a subset of VMs. With Rubrik Alta 4.2, we’re pleased to offer support for vCD with the following features: Support for vCD 8.10 and later Autodiscovery of vCD hierarchy SLA-based autoprotect at different levels of vCD hierarchy vCD instance vCD organizations Org VDC vApp Recovery flows Export and instant recovery File restore Network settings Self-service multi-tenancy for Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) Reporting per…

Communauté d’Agglomération Melun Val de Seine Reduces Costs and Management Time with Rubrik

The Communauté d’Agglomération Melun Val de Seine (CAMVS) is a French urban community, located in the Île-de-France region, in the Seine-et-Marne department. As a public inter-municipal cooperation establishment, CAMVS provides a number of services, including economic development, transport, habitat, environment, higher education, culture, and sports. They currently support 20 municipalities and over 130,000 inhabitants. We recently spoke with Emmanuel Chadoutaud, who manages the Infrastructure Systems and Data Security for 14 municipalities. What challenges were you experiencing with data protection? As a result of consolidating 14 municipalities into one centralized IT department, we [ended up] managing about ten different backup solutions. All of these solutions were error-prone and unreliable. We weren’t confident in our ability to guarantee reliable and always-on services. Additionally, the volume of work involved in just monitoring backups was becoming unmanageable. We had several occasions where we were unable to meet our SLAs due to solutions crashing. It got to the point that we were dealing with one backup incident or more per week. What were you looking for in your new solution? We’re a small, agile team, and monitoring our previous solutions was taking too much time. We simply cannot afford to be specialists in several different…
