OpenWorld 2019: How to Protect Mission-Critical Oracle Databases with Rubrik

When it comes to protecting mission-critical Oracle databases, many DBAs have traditionally turned to Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN).  However, with thousands of options and hundreds of scripts, protecting Oracle databases at scale can be a challenge for even the most seasoned DBA.  This blog wiIl explore how Rubrik Cloud Data Management simplifies the protection of Oracle databases by enabling DevOps-centric automation, instant recovery, self-service clones, and streamlined collaboration between DBAs and backup admins.   If you are attending Oracle OpenWorld this year, make sure to stop by the Rubrik booth (#317) to see these capabilities in action first-hand. Automate Oracle Data Protection with Rubrik Backup Service and SLA Domain Policies For organizations looking for a hands-off approach to Oracle data protection, Rubrik provides the Rubrik Backup Service (RBS) and SLA Domain Policies. RBS is a lightweight connector that can be installed on either Linux or UNIX hosts and auto-discovers all of the Oracle real application clusters (RAC), hosts, databases, and tablespaces within the environment.  Once the entire Oracle environment is discovered, users can leverage Rubrik’s intelligent and automated SLA policy engine to create declarative policies that define backup frequency, retention duration, and desired location. After an SLA policy has been mapped,…

Rubrik SLA Domain: Settings, Ops, Considerations

This multi-part blog series will take a deep dive into Rubrik’s SLA Domains to assist in understanding them better as well as configuring them optimally for your environment. SLA Domains Explained In the data protection world, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) define protection levels for workloads, availability targets, and objects that are crucial to a company. Collecting this information, implementing it, and staying compliant with the SLA is usually a tedious and difficult process. Rubrik uses SLA Domains to make those SLAs easier to achieve.  SLA Domains are comprised of these three components: Snapshot protection and retention  Replication  Archival When combined, these components protect and help manage the lifecycle of your most critical data. SLA Domains can be set to align with your company’s own SLAs, making compliance incredibly simple. Additionally, Rubrik’s SLA Domain construct is declarative in nature, allowing for a set it and forget it style of implementation. While it may seem like a small thing to use declarative policies, there is a major difference between old-style imperative backup jobs and Rubrik’s declarative SLA Domains. To understand the difference, imagine a situation in which you want to give your friend a LEGO set for them to build. The imperative…

The Digitization of Media: Protecting and Delivering Content with the Cloud

Cloud computing was once a buzzword. Now it’s a reality. This massive adoption of cloud is happening across nearly every industry and vertical as companies look to lower costs and increase agility. In this blog, we explore how two of our media and entertainment customers, Sesame Workshop and America’s Test Kitchen, are embracing the cloud to unlock added business value. Sesame Workshop Supports Key Digitization Efforts and Moves to the Cloud with Rubrik Sesame Workshop is a non-profit providing educational entertainment to children through a variety of media platforms and is best known for overseeing Sesame Street, the longest-running children’s show of all-time. Delivering educational programming to children in over 150 countries, Sesame Workshop’s IT team manages over 45 years-worth of intellectual property. Having previously relied on outdated, complex, legacy technologies, the organization selected Rubrik to help their team protect, archive, and manage business-critical data and content and to accelerate their use of Microsoft Azure. Sesame Workshop CTO Shadrach Kisten insists that the cloud is necessary for content archival, long-term retention, and accessibility among team members – something Rubrik facilitates. According to Kisten, “With Rubrik, we will be able to archive to Azure for 90 days and then push the…

IT and Sports: A Tale of Three Teams

Professional sports are big business. With teams looking for an edge both on and off the field, many clubs are embracing advancements in technology and big data to provide the best possible game-day experiences for players and fans. Not only is data being used to create championship-winning strategies, it’s also leveraged to better understand fan relations and ROIs and to gain insight into athletic performance during training sessions. This shift has led to the front offices of many franchises to embrace best-of-breed IT technologies that not only protect sensitive information, but help them unlock new business value from it. Tampa Bay Rays Hit It Out-of-the-Park with Instant Data Recovery From recruiting top athletes to game management, American baseball pioneered the use of data for on-field success. Many teams, like the Tampa Bay Rays, have scaled their IT infrastructure accordingly to store and manage critical statistics, including past season metrics, individual player performances, and other crucial data points. The Rays leverage this data to create reports that influence game plans and day-to-day business operations. As critical as data is for The Rays, managing it wasn’t always easy. The IT team was bogged down by fragmented, cumbersome backups and slow restores. To…

The Myth of Boring Backup

Am I crazy for thinking backup is exciting? Prior to joining Rubrik, I was a Gartner analyst for 20+ years and spent the majority of my time there covering primary storage and backup and recovery. As a storage analyst, I saw the consistently high client inquiry volumes on backup and recovery and decided to switch my coverage to this area. Some of my colleagues shook their heads and couldn’t understand why I wanted to cover a technology area that was so “boring.” To me, backup is not boring; it’s the biggest pain point in the entire data center infrastructure! It has often become a huge burden that slows down an organization’s quest for agility. As I studied the market and technologies, I realized that the pain was caused by too little innovation. All the major enterprise backup solutions only had incremental improvements in the past 20 years and couldn’t meet the new backup and recovery performance requirements. As a result of relentless data growth, backup windows have become longer and longer, while recovery is too slow to meet the requirement of new digital initiatives and changing expectations. Today, backup has become one of the most exciting fields because it’s experiencing…

How to Not Be A Victim of Infrastructure with Rubrik Live Mount

Since day one, Rubrik was built with the user in mind, delivering ultimate simplicity and comprehensive data protection at enterprise scale. That’s why we leverage our own platform to manage and protect our mission-critical data, allowing us to experience firsthand how our technology accelerates product development and automation. However, just like any other organization, we at Rubrik are still susceptible to unpredictable hiccups and disasters. We recently encountered one of these issues during a product release cycle. With Rubrik, we were able to quickly meet our time-to-market goals and minimize business disruption and engineering productivity loss. Here’s our story of how Rubrik came to the rescue: At Rubrik, one of our core values is velocity, and that applies to our engineering teams as well. Our engineering teams use our home-grown orchestration layer to allocate precious infrastructure resources for functional/integration and regression tests, which enables us to deliver quality product at lightning speed. This orchestration layer and its services run on top of an enterprise SAN (hybrid flash-based array) for storing the test data and builds. However, recently, this storage layer behaved erratically, significantly slowing down our build times and release pipelines. Our IT infrastructure teams came to the rescue, quickly…

Planning a Successful Disaster Recovery Strategy

Here at Rubrik, we strive to provide a strong suite of tools that make backup and disaster recovery (DR) as easy as possible. We’ve developed technologies like Live Mount, CloudOut, and CloudOn to help businesses recover quickly from a disaster and minimize downtime. In my experience, technology—no matter how advanced—is only a piece of the DR equation. A fully developed DR plan requires people, process, and technology in order to truly be successful. Here’s a look at some of the top considerations when developing your DR strategy: People First and foremost, you must have the right stakeholders and executive sponsorship sign off on your strategy so that they can go to bat for you when allocating people and resources. Successful DR planning requires time and input from many people across your organization—the larger the company, the more people involved. Your team should be representative of all key areas of your company, with smaller groups concentrated on logistics and operations where necessary. Here are some examples of how to effectively make up your team: Business Unit Stakeholders: Identify critical applications, success criteria, and potential roadblocks. Provide input to other teams as needed. Application Owners/Analysts: Own dependency mapping and success criteria for…

Bare Metal Recovery: The Rubrik Way

While the rage of late has been a shift into more agile and efficient operating models based on DevOps principles, infrastructure-as-code, virtualization, and cloud, the reality is that organizations are still relying on physical on-premises infrastructures to provide services. For many organizations, these physical systems are hosting some of their most mission-critical applications, which means ensuring protection is a business necessity. However, physical servers also present some of the toughest challenges when it comes to data protection. Decoupling data from physical servers and providing an image level, or Bare Metal Recovery (BMR), restore process is much harder without the layer of abstraction hypervisors provide. Rubrik Andes 5.0 seeks to break down these abstraction challenges, providing end-to-end protection around physical Windows servers. Rubrik’s Road to Bare Metal Recovery At Rubrik, we designed our platform to be a unified solution that can protect data regardless of where it lives. We dipped our toes into physical data protection with our third product release,  which offered options for administrators to backup on a fileset level. While this functionality is great at providing support for dump-and-scrape backups or protecting a large set of user-created files, complete system recoveries led to lengthier RTOs. We addressed this…
