Sphero Chooses Rubrik for Easy Integration with Nutanix AHV and AWS

Based in Boulder, Colorado, Sphero designs and develops robots that fuse physical robots, digital apps, and entertainment experiences. Founded in 2010, the company helped pioneer connected play with its smartphone-enabled spherical robots that encourage learning through play. Since the launch of their iconic BB-8 droid, Sphero has created robotic toys for some of the largest entertainment brands in the world, including Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar while also engaging kids worldwide with their presence in over 20,000 schools. We recently spoke with JD Snodgrass, IT Manager, who oversees all IT services at Sphero. Tell us about Sphero’s IT strategy. My team and I support and manage all end-user systems for the company, including networking, servers, AV, and help desk. Sphero is dedicated to providing employees with innovative technology to help serve its global customer base. As a result, ensuring always-on services is a top priority for my team. What issues were you experiencing with your legacy backup solution? Previously, we only relied on network storage devices and disk. We had no physical backups and no disaster recovery plan. Upon joining the company, I knew we needed more robust data protection. On top of that, we had an incident that caused part…

Encrypting Your Data in the Cloud: Rubrik CloudOut with Google Cloud Storage

With the rise of ransomware attacks and other security threats, data encryption is mission-critical for any company’s security strategy. The risk of improperly encrypting data is especially amplified in the cloud era, when sensitive data is stored outside of customer data centers and in public cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. While these providers offer a number of tools to help customer encrypt data before it is stored, these tools can be complex and difficult to use. Addressing the top enterprise pain points is what Rubrik was founded on, and security has been core to its platform since day one. This includes end-to-end encryption, both in transit and at rest, which we extend to our integration with public cloud providers. The Rubrik approach simplifies how data encryption is implemented and masks complexity from users. Rubrik has a wide breadth of cloud capabilities, from simple archival to DR and test/dev. Many customers leverage our CloudOut capability for archival of their backup data in public cloud providers, often as a replacement for tape. This approach is typically more cost effective and more reliable, and offers better response times in the event that data restoration is required.…

Helping Customers with Their Cloud Journey

There was a time not so long ago when adopting the public cloud was considered too big of risk for the enterprise. Today, enterprises are seeing public cloud vendors as strategic partners and exploring new ways to leverage the innovation, agility, and scale of providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. However, enterprise use cases for the public cloud are not restricted to cloud-native workloads, as originally articulated by AWS and others, but also include more traditional and monolithic applications. As Tim Carr discussed in his recent Gestalt IT blog post, enterprise customers are embracing the public could but typically in a phased approach. Source: Can a Backup Appliance Really Help your Enterprise Cloud Strategy? – Part 2 These cloud journey phases often look like this: Phase 1: Leverage basic public cloud services that require minimal changes to current workloads or processes. Phase 2: Build out an infrastructure using public cloud resources for new workloads or for migrating existing on-premises workloads. Phase 3: Refactor applications to take advantage of public cloud scale and innovations, including more advanced public cloud services. Rubrik has built solutions into its Cloud Data Management platform focused on the needs of our customers as they…

Tampa Bay Rays on Pitching a Perfect Game with Rubrik

Juan Ramirez, Vice President of Information Technology at the Tampa Bay Rays, discusses how Rubrik transformed the game of data management, ensuring operations run smoothly both during the season and offseason. Tell me about your role at Tampa Bay Rays. I’m the Vice President of Information Technology at the Tampa Bay Rays and am responsible for the Rays’ technology strategies and operations. I joined the team in 2006 and am heading into my 10th season. When I joined the department, it was just myself and an assistant. Since then, the department has grown greatly from 2 to 12 people. What challenges were you experiencing with backup prior to Rubrik? Backup has always been an issue around here. Our previous solution was very cumbersome, and since our business grows so fast and is very sensitive, keeping up with the changes on a daily basis was a struggle. Particularly, we had a lot issues with tape and backing up to disk. Also, the recovery and response times were never there. We have 350 VMs, and we try to protect as much as we can. The baseball operations and workloads are the most important to us. Thus, if anyone needs to restore a…

The IT department as a whole is 14 team members, but the infrastructure team consists of only 2 – Shane and I. Since it is just Shane and I responsible for managing the network, storage, virtualization, backup, and recovery, we needed a system that was simple and easy to operate. Tell me about your environment Rubrik supports all systems at our Pennsylvania location with 250 end users as well as at our remote location in Texas with 25 employees. Currently, we have approximately 85 VMs under protection with Rubrik across two sites. Our environment is 100% virtualized, another major shift over…

How We Built More Efficient Data Archival with Cloud

The move to cloud is no longer a question of if but rather when. However, enterprises are still confused on how to adopt a cloud strategy within their own environments. As our CEO Bipul Sinha stated at the Looking AHEAD Tech Summit, in order to increase cloud adoption, “companies need to create killer applications to leverage the cloud.” At Rubrik, we create applications that help enterprises transition to cloud seamlessly. The first step in the path is to archive the backups. The challenge of archiving to public cloud is ensuring that data can be pulled down into an on-premises location without breaking the bank or your recovery time objectives. This is where Rubrik works its magic. When Rubrik manages your data, it keeps a record of the metadata that is quickly accessible without data rehydration. You can locate VMs and files instantly with Google-like search. Just type a few letters into Rubrik’s predictive search engine, and you’ll get served results instantly. In this post, I will describe how Rubrik archives data and makes data rehydration fast and efficient. Snapshot Upload We have jobs running per VM that archives snapshots depending on the configured SLA policy for that VM. When an…

Three Use Cases Demonstrate How Rubrik Rocks Recovery

Our customers and peers in the industry always want to hear about how others are using Rubrik to provide data protection. And as much as I love our technology, it’s really all about how our converged data management solution is being leveraged by those looking to ensure that their SLA requirements are being met (or exceeded). Recently, we wanted to bring in another pair of eyeballs to look at our customer testimonials. The tech-savvy team at ActualTech Media cropped up as a great fit to see what we’re doing, capture our use cases into a white paper, and help provide you with that lightbulb moment that is so awesome to experience when it comes to ditching backup jobs for declarative SLA policies. I humbly invite you to read their brand new paper, hot off the press, focused entirely on addressing three of the most common challenges beleaguering administrators looking to provide data protection for today’s data center and tomorrow’s applications. In this masterpiece of wordcraft, you’ll learn: Use Case 1: Ousting Tape-Based Backups Learn how using cloud and object storage can reduce costs by 60%, provide incredibly more efficient recovery workflows, and offer massively boosted availability for data. Use Case…
