Heartbroken by vSphere Data Protection?

Has the end of VMware’s vSphere Data Protection left you spurned? Getting dumped hurts. So, take your time and play the field. Just know that when you are ready to move on to a more serious relationship, Rubrik is ready for you. To add insult to injury, VMware is offering three years of Avamar Virtual Edition licensing for free. . .as long as you have less than 4 TB; otherwise, you have to pay. And, regardless of how much data you need to protect, you must continue to pay maintenance costs. Ouch! What is this – alimony? Love really can hurt. But it doesn’t have to! There are no limits to Rubrik’s love.  Have more than 4 TB of protected data? No worries! Rubrik uses a linear scale-out approach to solve data growth concerns. Simply add more briks to accommodate your company’s data growth. VMware will continue to focus on the vSphere Storage APIs – Data Protection (VADP), which Rubrik leverages to backup your virtual machines. This is great news, but your company may not use 100% VMware virtual machines. Fear not–we’re diversifying our portfolio by providing support for physical Windows and Linux servers, as well as Microsoft SQL databases. Speaking…

Cloud Data Management Keeps Balance Innovations at the Forefront of Retail

This week, I chat with Todd Shutts, Senior Vice President of the Advanced Technology Group at Balance Innovations, about evolving retail to support cloud services, speeding up infrastructure upgrade roll-outs, and the smart way to utilizing public cloud. Balance Innovations offers a unique retail currency management software platform. How does your team help the company stay at the forefront of retail innovation? Balance Innovations delivers a cloud service platform to help retailers transform their currency operations. We overhaul traditionally manual tasks (store-level reports done in Excel and delivered via fax) into actionable data insights for a retail executive to increase efficiency and performance. We drive transparency into currency management, and when retailers can see it, they’re able to act much faster. My team is chartered with helping the organization build product, from tactical to long-term strategy. Over time, we have evolved our product delivery mechanism to cloud services. How are you evolving IT to support this business transition? To develop product that is easier to consume, deploys more quickly, and with fewer roadblocks, we have built cloud native systems on infrastructure- and platform-as-a-service technologies. Continuous integration and delivery, with a focus on DevOps, are key drivers of this new product…

Fortune 500 Consumer Retail Company Simplifies Data Protection with Rubrik

At VMworld 2016, I sat down with one of our customers at a Fortune 500 consumer retail company to discuss how they are using Rubrik and the benefits they have seen. As a result, they have wiped out management complexity for their backup and recovery environment and created a plan to expand their global footprint. What type of backup challenges were you experiencing? Our team was looking to simplify backup and recovery. We were previously using multiple solutions and were frustrated by the time needed to train employees let alone recover data. It just wasn’t feasible, and we needed faster recovery times. Additionally, our previous solution was extremely expensive. We have two heavy data centers, and we were running out of runway in our remote locations as well as our local locations. To expand storage space within our former solution would have been very costly. What sold you on Rubrik? While we were evaluating other solutions, when we saw your product, it spoke for itself. That was the biggest thing. I don’t think anyone on our team could effectively know how to use our previous product. With Rubrik, I can take anyone off the street, and in less than hour,…

This is Cloud Data Management

This is Cloud Data Management What is Cloud Data Management? Cloud Data Management is a platform that orchestrates mission critical application data across private and public clouds while delivering data management functions such as backup, disaster recovery, archival, compliance, search, analytics, and copy data management in a single, run-anywhere platform. Built for the cloud generation, Rubrik eliminates the complexity of legacy solutions with an automated policy engine that manages data throughout its lifecycle across all data management functions. This vision to deliver a software fabric for data management is rooted in our cloud vendor-agnostic platform, preventing vendor lock-in to any particular cloud. The cloud is a democracy. In the past, we lived in a restrictive system, one where we were anchored to legacy platforms with a disparate view of our businesses. The cloud represents a new era that liberates enterprises by delivering universal access and automation over their applications. With cloud, enterprises can reduce cost and time-to-market while retaining business agility. The cloud adoption is not a question of “if” but rather “how.” Many enterprises are unable to realize the promise of the cloud because of the limitations within their own infrastructure. They have spent millions and millions on their…

Security 101: What Security Really Means For Data Management

Data security is not a new priority for enterprises. In earlier blog posts, we discussed the rising threat of ransomware and how a next-gen data management solution prevented a ransomware attack. Given the exponential growth of data and increasing trend in data breaches, it is imperatives that businesses apply the highest security standards to all their data. However, the concept of security is often confounded in the context of data management. To clarify the important terms, components, and their implications for data security within enterprise backup and recovery, I sat down with Adam Goldberg, who leads product development for Rubrik’s security solutions. Adam comes from a security background with previous experience at the Department of Defense.Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) FIPS 140-2 is the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) security standard used to accredit cryptographic modules. It is often a requirement for a product to be installed in a location where sensitive data is stored. The FIPS 140-2 standard extends far beyond the federal government. For example, financial and healthcare institutions collect, store, and transfer highly sensitive information that needs to be secured. While FIPS 140-2 features four levels of security, only Level…

Langs Building Supplies Stops Ransomware Attack in its Tracks

A ransomware attack prevented by a reliable, next-gen backup solution Langs Building Supplies, a leading supplier of timber products in South Queensland, Australia, was recently hit by a ransomware attack. Due to its effective backup infrastructure, the company was able to thwart the threat and restore its data without paying a ransom. Ransomware is a special type of malware that encrypts victims’ data and prevents them from accessing it until a ransom is paid. In a previous post, our security lead David Ramos explained the rising threat of ransomware and strategies for prevention. As Ramos stated, “With an effective backup solution, ransomware can ideally be reduced to a minor inconvenience.” This was certainly true for Langs Building Supplies. We sat down with Matthew Day, ICT and Support Manager at Langs Building Supplies, to discuss his experience defending against a ransomware attack. Q: How were you able to identify a ransomware attack had occurred? A: We have monitoring tools in place to send alerts when there are high change rates in the data structure. An alert was triggered, and we were able to shut down the affected VDI desktop within minutes. Because we could stop the attack mid-stream, we were able…

Here’s Why You Should Shelve Backup Jobs for Declarative Policies

Changing out legacy, imperative data center models for the more fluid declarative models really gets me excited, and I’ve written about the two ideas in an earlier post. While the concept isn’t exactly new for enterprise IT – many folks enjoy using declarative solutions from configuration management tools such as Puppet – the scope of deployment has largely been limited to compute models for running workloads. The data protection space has largely been left fallow and awaiting some serious innovation. In fact, this is something I hear from Rubrik’s channel partners and customers quite frequently because their backup and recovery world has forever been changed by the simplicity and power of converged data management. To quote Justin Warren in our Eigencast recording, backup should be boring and predictable rather than exciting and adventurous because the restoration process failed, and you’re now responsible for missing data. That’s never fun. Thinking deeper on this idea, it brings me to one of the more radical ideas that a new platform brings: the lack of needing to schedule backup jobs. Creating jobs and telling them when exactly to run, including dependency chains, is the cornerstone of all legacy backup solutions. As part of their…

Backup Wars: The Dawn of Next-Generation Data Protection

Update: New Backup Wars video out on Episode IV: Star Wars – Backup Wars Edition. Click here! Some of you may have witnessed the epic battle between Batman and Superman last weekend. Well, we leave the interpretation of “epic” to you. Today, we are showing you a battle that is not in theatres. In honor of World Backup Day, we bring back your favorite superhero in data protection, Mr. Awesome Backup, in “Backup Wars.” In the world of backup and recovery, Mr. Awesome Backup ends the drought and restores innovation to defeat Mr. Flakey Backup. Jokes aside, battling the woes of legacy architecture is exhausting. Given the rapid adoption of virtualization and large data growth, organizations struggle to access, retrieve, and recover all this data. Legacy systems implement incremental improvements, but these Band-Aids are not enough when the underlying architecture is broken. You deserve a next-generation solution that provides consistent performance and simplifies management of backup and recovery. This is what Rubrik represents – a new school approach that eliminates traditional backup software by providing a converged data management platform that is intelligent, simple, and fast. Rubrik unifies hardware and software components complete with a state-of-the-art user experience and scale-out…
