Petit Forestier Deploys Rubrik for Cost Efficiencies and Easy Google Cloud Platform Integration

Headquartered in Villepinte, France, Petit Forestier is the European leader in refrigerated vehicle and container rental, providing key products for businesses whose success depends directly on controlled temperatures of their products and maintaining the continuity of the cold chain. Laurency: As a family-owned company, we care deeply about our employees. We want to ensure they have a world-class experience by equipping them with modern IT solutions that will last for the next decade. We need infrastructure that will scale to support our company’s growth and transition to the cloud. In the Eye of the Beholder: Rubrik Alta 4.2

In any new release, there are the major features–the items you mention when asked for a 30-second version of “what’s new.” Rubrik Alta 4.2 is no exception, and we’ve talked a lot about the high-level themes and larger features. Perhaps it’s my IT Operations background, but while I get excited about the banner features, I also find the “smaller” items fascinating. I still remember reading release notes as a customer and seeing a feature or feature improvement that, while minor to many, was hugely impactful and an indication of development maturity. If developer cycles aren’t also put towards improvement to existing features or “minor additions,” that’s not healthy and is especially challenging for current customers. Given that, I’d like to take a few minutes to focus on a few less notable, but still important, 4.2 features. Let’s call them “In the Eye of the Beholder” features. Edge on AHV & Hyper-V I’ve spent a lot of time with customers who have extensive Remote Office / Branch Office (ROBO) architectures. Backup and recovery in these environments can be painful–lack of physical space, tape rotation, budget challenges, performance, and more. While Rubrik in the data center traditionally has a 3 or 4 node minimum,…

The Power of Recovery from Long-Term Archive

In the world of backup and recovery today, there are many methods of copying data and ways to store that data. Whether you are sending data to Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Object Storage, NFS, or Tape, there should be a policy-driven and simple way to accomplish it. Most IT pundits talk about how important it is to backup or archive data; very seldom do they talk about ways of recovering data regardless of location. Rubrik provides a variety of methods to recover virtual or physical machines and restore protected data. Archiving snapshots is a method used to provide cost-effective long-term storage of snapshot data outside of the local Rubrik cluster transparently to the user. There is no need to schedule jobs or tasks to archive data and, regardless of location, all data is accessible from the same search interfaces. Rubrik deduplicates and compresses data before archiving, and encryption is used to encrypt all archive data. Even when archived, a Rubrik cluster can transparently recover a source virtual machine (VM) and mount a point-in-time copy of the source VM. A VM can be recovered by using any of the standard Rubrik data protection methods. Backups are stored on a local Rubrik…

Customers can now orchestrate application data across multi-hypervisors and cloud environments. New application-aware data protection and management for enterprise apps Rubrik Alta introduces Oracle support by integrating with RMAN. Data Protection for the Changing Enterprise

The modern enterprise is changing. We are moving towards a world of containers, API-first architectures, and cloud-native applications; the latter two are discussed by Chris Wahl, Rubrik’s Chief Technologist, in a previous post. Enterprise technology is moving from email to Slack, relational databases to NoSQL, and more. But not every company is moving at warp speed, and both Oracle and Microsoft are still relevant in almost every data center. While Rubrik protects the enterprise on-premises, we are far more than a converged data management hardware appliance. We support multiple architectures beyond hardware via Rubrik Edge, our software-only appliance for ROBO, and Cloud Cluster for cloud-native apps and public cloud data protection. Rubrik is evolving and growing rapidly to meet cutting-edge business requirements while maintaining a Google-like, web-scale architecture and striking simplicity. Let’s Talk Applications! Tim Carr is right (don’t tell him I said that) — DBAs typically do not like to step outside of their comfort zone or native toolsets. Luckily, with our new Oracle integration, Rubrik provides its core benefits such as immutability and policy-driven management while integrating with native Oracle capabilities. Our approach is to integrate with RMAN, which provides agentless support (yay!) but still allows Oracle DBAs to use…

End-to-End Data Management with Nutanix AHV

Last week, we announced Rubrik Alta, our ninth and most significant product release. Alta brings many cool, innovative additions. One of the items that I’m most excited about is support for Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) virtual machines. Rubrik now provides end-to-end data management for Nutanix. So, users can securely access data instantly, automate protection policies, and manage their AHV workloads. Rubrik has long supported VMware vSphere on the Nutanix platform. But Rubrik is excited to extend its partnership with Nutanix to be one of the first platforms to support native AHV backup and recovery. Alta’s support for AHV, as well as Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware, enables customers to orchestrate application data across multi-hypervisor and multi-cloud environments. Here’s how it works: Rubrik capitalizes on enhancements to Acropolis Block Services (ABS), such as Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) support. As you probably know, we’re all about the APIs. Rubrik leverages Nutanix’s new-and-improved REST 3.0 API to interact with Nutanix Changed Region Tracking (CRT) and query the changed metadata regions given any two snapshots of a virtual disk or VM. This approach is indispensable for taking incremental backups because of its efficiency. It’s also useful for taking full backups since the API identifies regions that are zeroed, therefore saving on…
