Rubrik Datos IO, 1 Year Later: Onwards to Rubrik Mosaic!

What seemed like a good match back then, looks like a great match one year later. Last week marked the one-year anniversary of Rubrik’s first acquisition and the day that Datos IO joined the Rubrik family.  I want to use this occasion to share a few things that I’ve learned along the way and what it’s like when “a startup meets startup.” It all began with a conversation between Bipul Sinha, Rubrik’s co-founder and CEO, and I about 18 months ago. Fast-forward to today, and that conversation seems like yesterday. The V  in RIVET (the acronym for our company values) is velocity, and it’s this velocity across all functions that made one year fast-forward like one day. What made the Rubrik acquisition of Datos IO a success revolves around the absorptive capacity concept, or the “ability to recognize the value of new information, assimilate it, and apply it to commercial ends.” First, Rubrik understood the emerging and fast-growing NoSQL and Big Data market and had an appetite for acquiring purpose-built products that help expand Cloud Data Management offerings.  Next, both companies grasped the need to integrate without disrupting—avoiding a costly mistake that often occurs when two startups join forces. Finally, we…

50+ Customer Visits, 1 Key Theme: NoSQL Is Now Mainstream In Enterprise

Over the past year, I’ve had the good fortune of sitting down with leading enterprises to speak with CIOs, enterprise architects, database engineering leaders, and more. Many of these discussions centered on the evolving world of business applications and databases and the challenges of digital transformation initiatives (customer experience, digital banking experience, data-as-a-service, real-time analytics, etc). In these discussions, I gained insight into why enterprises are embracing NoSQL databases, and several enterprise data management trends stood out to me. Here are the top three that I believe are shaping the market and CIO digital transformation initiatives the most in 2019: Enterprise NoSQL Adoption Is Now Mainstream Non-relational NoSQL databases are no longer stepchildren of the relational database space but hold their own prominent place in the enterprise data architecture strategy. In recent years, NoSQL has become critical for building cloud-native applications, given that traditional relational databases cannot deliver the same agility, flexibility, and performance that these modern applications need. NoSQL started with data stores such as MongoDB and Apache Cassandra but is now evolving to include in-memory database stores like Redis and search products like ElasticSearch and Splunk, which are fast developing as cornerstones for operational and analytical use cases.…

NoSQL Replication Is Not Backup

As we kick off 2019, I wanted to reflect back on a trend that has continued to gain momentum over the past few years–the march towards cloud-native applications that rely on highly-distributed and non-relational NoSQL databases. Our industry increasingly relies on architectures that embrace scale-out, highly-distributed systems. From small startups designing entirely in the cloud to large enterprises developing net new customer facing applications, the move to NoSQL databases has increased across the globe. While cloud-native architectures and, in particular, NoSQL databases solve problems such as resiliency from hardware failures and geographic distribution, they also amplify a few common pitfalls. One of the biggest challenges is that because NoSQL databases have done such an excellent job with native database replication, many organizations are fooled into a false sense of protection. The irony here is that by solving one major problem, many others now lurk in the background, leaving critical customer data at risk. As organizations continue to deploy production applications on NoSQL databases, it’s nearly inevitable that the data will become unavailable or corrupted. What happens in the event of a virus attack, data corruption, or a simple human error such as an admin dropping a table? If the only…

Easing Regulatory Compliance with Queryable Recovery

As organizations continue to ramp up their efforts to collect and analyze more data, a variety of privacy and data protection regulations have been set to support users’ personal information. In many cases, organizations must now rework their data protection strategy to comply with these new laws while also leveraging the business value of data.   As a Cloud Data Management company, Rubrik wants to make it easier for our customers to deal with all aspects of protecting and managing their data, and facilitating compliance is a critical aspect of that. Backup and recovery can be an especially challenging part of privacy compliance. In this blog post, I’ll focus on selective restores in light of these regulations–though they’re very handy in any DBA’s toolbox. Under the Hood Recovery is an important aspect of many privacy and data protection requirements. Rubrik’s Live Mount feature makes queryable data recovery and selective restores for databases quick and easy. Rubrik initially built this capability for VMs and has expanded it over time to include workloads like traditional physical and virtual relational databases. At a high level, Live Mount makes use of the performance and storage capabilities of the Rubrik cluster to instantly mount the…

Rubrik Datos IO Streaming Recovery: Near-Zero RTO for NoSQL Databases

Backup and recovery has been overlooked as backwaters of enterprise data. Innovations were incremental at best until the arrival of Rubrik, the company that led the world to rethink backup and recovery as the frontier of data management for cloud-connected enterprises. Data protection has long been a pain point for enterprises across industries. Applications built on top of traditional databases like Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or IBM DB2 are generally stateful end-to-end. This means that whether you are recovering from media failures, site loss or user errors, you must first shutdown the application, recover the backend database, and reconnect your application before consumers can access it again. However, things are different in the world of next-generation applications that are deployed on modern distributed architectures such as NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Apache Cassandra, DataStax, CouchBase, Apache HBase, and many others). Shared-nothing architectures, eventually consistency nature of write operations, and scale-out capabilities force us to rethink NoSQL backup and recovery. But probably the most important aspect is the shear scale of data sets that are stored and maintained in these modern NoSQL databases. These databases power a number of modern enterprise use cases, including Internet of Things (IoT), security/customer real-time analytics, customer 360…

Riding the Wave at AWS re:Invent

Cloud computing is riding a wave to become the norm for all enterprises, with AWS as the current leader. Amazon recently reported its third quarter earnings, and despite the mixed results, its AWS cloud computing business unit has continued to experience exponential growth. AWS revenues grew 46% and is well on its way to becoming a $30 billion business in 2019. Rubrik, of course, is no stranger to rapid growth in the cloud. From day one, Rubrik has focused on its vision to be the world’s leading Cloud Data Management company, and we have been relentless in building a solution that helps our customers ride the wave in their journey to the public cloud. Along the way, we’ve built a strong partnership with AWS and have been recognized as a member of the AWS Partner Network. We also recently achieved the coveted AWS Storage Competency designation, which validates our approach and commitment to a deeper integration with AWS services. It’s been rewarding seeing our joint customers solve their biggest challenges with our growing portfolio of cloud services for AWS. We extended our cloud story this year by acquiring Datos IO, a market leader in data management for cloud applications built…

Think You’re Ready for Digital Transformation? Set up for Success with Rubrik Andes 5.0

Updated 1/31: Rubrik Andes 5.0 is Generally Available as of January 31, 2019. Digital transformation is top-of-mind for every enterprise. Recent research predicts that by the end of 2019, digital transformation spending will be up 42% from 2017.* At its core, digital transformation means using technology to automate manual processes in order to respond to the market faster. It’s critical for driving key business outcomes such as enabling employees to develop products, delighting customers with rich experiences, and outpacing competition–all while streamlining operations for cost-efficiencies. But in reality, enterprises are still in the infancy stage of their journey. From the beginning, Rubrik was architected to provide the foundation necessary for transitioning into a digital-first company. Here’s how we’ve helped our customers accelerate their digital transformation so far: API-driven automation: CIOs are constantly looking for ways to increase automation to deliver IT-as-a-Service and empower their organization beyond IT. Rubrik was built to be API-first, meaning that everything we do is available over our RESTful APIs. This enables admins to leverage self-service so they can focus on more strategic business goals–faster product development, improved operational efficiencies, and building competitive edge. AI-driven ransomware detection: A ransomware attack is no longer a question of…

Rubrik Datos IO 3.0: NoSQL Database Protection in the World of Containers

Last month, we were thrilled to announce Rubrik Datos IO 3.0, the biggest Datos IO launch ever. The most exciting additions of this release include new support for NoSQL databases deployed on containers and the ability to deploy Datos IO natively as a Docker container. These capabilities enable enterprises that are adapting container-based architectures to pursue digital transformation and build out their multi-cloud strategies. The Journey from Physical Servers to VMs to Containers The technology around us is evolving rapidly. We started with building applications that run on servers (aka physical machines) and then gradually moved to VMs that allowed us to run multiple applications on a single physical machine. Though this helped optimize data center utilization, procuring and managing physical and virtual machines incurred time and operational costs. Cloud quickly become the solution that enabled faster time-to-market while achieving massive cost savings. However, with so many infrastructure choices, precious developer time is often wasted in deciding the underlying infrastructure. Containers address this pain point by enabling developers to spend time building robust applications, leaving the choice of underlying infrastructure to IT. Organizations are increasingly embracing this next wave to build containerized applications. With containers, they no longer have to…
