Rubrik and vSAN: Simplifying the Operational Experience

There is no doubt that policy plays a big role in the move to the next generation of the Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC). The introduction of cloud and software-defined solutions to IT environments brings many benefits in terms of flexibility and choice, but with that comes complexity. With all of the moving parts it takes to make up our data centers today, administrators are having a hard time keeping up with organization and customer demands. Traditionally, IT Operations have taken an imperative approach to managing environments, which includes providing instructions to infrastructure and letting it execute, building out components, and doing configurations manually. This practice cannot keep up with the software-defined world. For this reason, we’re seeing a shift to a declarative model in which administrators define the desired end state while the software determines the best path possible to obtain it. This approach revolves heavily around policy. Simplifying the Operational Experience VMware’s vSAN is a great example of how moving to a declarative approach and applying policy can benefit an organization. vSAN abstracts away the mundane tasks of managing the performance and availability of the underlying storage, instead replacing it with a set of policies, or pre-defined capabilities applied to…

VM Linking: Because Data Outlives Infrastructure

At Rubrik, we believe in liberating data from infrastructure so that it can be instantly accessed at anytime, anywhere. This is becoming increasingly important as companies undergo digital transformation, and we painstakingly make sure that we support the full life cycle of data even as the underlying infrastructure changes. With our customers’ needs in mind,  we developed a simple, but very powerful, feature designed to deliver true data mobility – VM linking. The VM linking feature ensures that as VMs are moved between vCenter servers, the Rubrik system is able to correlate the different “identities” of the VMs across these servers. This allows Rubrik to provide consistent protection for VMs and easy access to the VMs historical snapshots, regardless of the vCenter server from where they were taken. VM linking solves some of the biggest pain points our customers have experienced when managing historical backup data in a changing infrastructure. To illustrate, I’ll walk through a few examples of how customers benefit from this new capability. Swing Migration to a Greenfield vCenter Deployment With the new releases of vSphere, along with the ending of support for older vSphere versions approaching, many customers are planning upgrades as part of their data…

Get Your “VMware vSphere 6.5 Host Resources Deep Dive” eBook!

With an average 4.9 out of 5 star rating on Amazon, Frank Denneman and Niels Hagoort’s latest book, VMware vSphere 6.5 Host Resources Deep Dive, certainly lives up to the expectation. The book covers four main topics: CPU, Memory, Storage, and Networking. The in-depth read can only be described as a serious deep dive for people who seriously want to understand what is going on under the covers of their VMware environment. I don’t think I have ever seen topics like NUMA or NIC drivers explained at this level of depth. If you ask me, it is fair to say that Frank and Niels redefined the term “deep dive.”  – Duncan Epping, VMware Chief Technologist and previous co-author with Frank on the Clustering Deepdive series. As Frank and Niels describe it: The VMware vSphere 6.5 Host Resources Deep Dive is a guide to building consistent high-performing ESXi hosts. A book that people can’t put down. Written for administrators, architects, consultants, aspiring VCDX-es and people eager to learn more about the elements that control the behavior of CPU, memory, storage and network resources. This book shows that we can fundamentally and materially improve the systems we’re building. We can make the…

Get Ready for Rubrik at VMworld 2017!

I’ve had the pleasure of attending a large swath of VMworld conferences over the years. It’s usually a hectic week in which I see many familiar faces within the virtualization community while also trying earnestly to meet new folks who want to chat about technology, career growth, or Game of Thrones. One overtone to the general chaos at VMware’s flagship event is having fun with the folks at Rubrik as we attempt to balance the joys of passing out LEGO kits with sharing knowledge on various techy bits. I’ve had the extreme pleasure of discussing Rubrik’s Cloud Data Management solution while giving back to the community in various Top 10 rated sessions such as Getting Started with PowerShell and PowerCLI for Your VMware Environment. But this year is different since I have an amazingly talented team of Technical Marketing Engineers who have blown the doors off whatever I could come up with solo! Here’s a quick rundown of where you’ll find us all during the VMworld 2017 U.S. conference. We hope to see you at our sessions, the Rubrik booth (#412), and our super slick VIP VMworld Party! Make sure to say hello, as we’ll be handing out some sticker swag and other…

Heartbroken by vSphere Data Protection?

Has the end of VMware’s vSphere Data Protection left you spurned? Getting dumped hurts. So, take your time and play the field. Just know that when you are ready to move on to a more serious relationship, Rubrik is ready for you. To add insult to injury, VMware is offering three years of Avamar Virtual Edition licensing for free. . .as long as you have less than 4 TB; otherwise, you have to pay. And, regardless of how much data you need to protect, you must continue to pay maintenance costs. Ouch! What is this – alimony? Love really can hurt. But it doesn’t have to! There are no limits to Rubrik’s love.  Have more than 4 TB of protected data? No worries! Rubrik uses a linear scale-out approach to solve data growth concerns. Simply add more briks to accommodate your company’s data growth. VMware will continue to focus on the vSphere Storage APIs – Data Protection (VADP), which Rubrik leverages to backup your virtual machines. This is great news, but your company may not use 100% VMware virtual machines. Fear not–we’re diversifying our portfolio by providing support for physical Windows and Linux servers, as well as Microsoft SQL databases. Speaking…

What It Means to Be a VMware vExpert

Being a technical professional often results in no one knowing about the work being done–if things go according to plan. Our focus is on being invisible. We set up complicated servers, hook them all together, and offer up resources for virtual machines and data repositories. And in the end, an application is given a home, where visibility of the world is often abstracted from view. I think this is one reason why engineers like myself like to write about current infrastructure. From bugs to beautiful cabling jobs, we find beauty in our operational expertise. And few programs reward the blogs, podcasts, presentations, and overall evangelism of passionate virtualization professionals the way VMware’s vExpert award does. This is an acknowledgement from VMware given to over 1,200 people who have demonstrated the ability to pass along their knowledge to the community. It’s not easy to come home from a long day of work and fire up your laptop to engage in even more work-centric focus. The amount of contributions and the willingness to discuss various areas of expertise speak highly of these technical professionals and their dedication to performant infrastructure for their business. And while there are a few rewards for becoming a vExpert,…

Pump up the Excitement – VMworld Approaches!

Has it really been a year already? Apparently so, because another gauntlet of VMworld conferences approach and is bristling with energy and excitement. The Rubrik team and I will once again be embarking on an adventure to tour the Las Vegas and Barcelona events, spreading some serious amounts of knowledge, heavy-hitting swag, and a plethora of other surprises. This year, with thanks to our swelling customer base and buzz around making data protection “not suck,” we’ve set the bar to ludicrous speed with a Platinum presence and all the trimmings that goes along with that. I’m stoked! Earlier, I blogged on Wahl Network with an outline of sessions in which I’m excited to present with the likes of Duncan Epping, Kyle Ruddy, Chris Gurley, and Eric Shanks. If you’re interested in learning more about Rubrik CDM, data center automation, PowerShell and PowerCLI scripting, vRealize Automation blueprints, or vRealize Orchestrator workflows – and you’ll be at either of the VMworld events – you’re in for a treat! Stay tuned for even more epic details as we get closer to the VMware event of the year! 🙂

New White Paper – Rubrik and VMware Virtual SAN

One common thread among all application requirements is the need for reliable, performant storage. Today, that comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes – from legacy, dual-controller arrays to software defined storage using distributed, scale-out architectures. All of the choice can be a tad daunting at times, especially when you consider the criticality of workloads that will be writing and reading their data. At Rubrik, we see a vast number of different storage solutions in production for our customer workloads. One of the first questions that crop up is around compatibility – can we provide data protection services for their VMware virtual machines? The simple answer is: sure! As I’ve rambled on about before, abstraction by way of vSphere APIs for Data Protection (VADP) allows our Converged Data Management fabric to largely ignore the underlying storage technology being used to provide data services to an application. While not all of them are fashioned in the same way, specific nuances are handled by the hypervisor directly. But it’s one thing to say that two technologies work together and quite another thing entirely to prove it out. My many years as an engineer and architect have taught me to “trust,…
