data archival to Microsoft Azure for long term retention and instant access

Overview

Berkeley College, a leader in career-focused education since 1931, offers a diverse range of academic programs through its Larry L. Luing School of Business, School of Professional Studies, and School of Health Studies, with campuses across New Jersey, New York, and online.

As Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Leonard De Botton leads a technology team focused on supporting the college's nine campuses and empowering students. “At Berkeley, we strive to empower each student for lifelong success,” said De Botton. “With Rubrik Security Cloud, we not only streamline operations and enhance the student experience but also gain the agility to innovate beyond backup, enabling us to deploy applications in minutes while staying aligned with our mission and vision.

Challenges

  1. Instability and management complexity of legacy data protection systems

  2. Cumbersome replication and long-term archiving process

  3. Lengthy recovery times

Results

  1. A single platform enhancing cyber resilience with disaster recovery, replication, cloud archival, and test/dev capabilities

  2. Elimination of tape with data archival to Microsoft Azure

  3. Integration with Pure Storage FlashArray//m for high performance

  4. Rubrik for Physical SQL for point-in-time backup and restores

Challenges

LEGACY APPROACH NOT BUILT FOR THE CLOUD ERA

As Berkeley College’s data footprint grew, ensuring robust data security and cyber resilience became increasingly vital for their highly virtualized and cloud-based environment. Joseph Pagano, Senior Director of Infrastructure, noted that their previous solution struggled to support the growing infrastructure and protect their data effectively. “Managing our data security was becoming complex as we scaled through virtualization. Our legacy systems were cumbersome to manage, and they didn’t provide the level of security we needed to keep pace with our expanding infrastructure,” said Pagano. “We were relying on outdated tools to safeguard a modern virtualized environment, which left us vulnerable.”

Pagano and his team sought a solution designed for today’s threat landscape. “We needed a platform that could ensure our data was secure and resilient, allowing us to protect and recover swiftly in the event of any incident, malicious or not. Traditional systems just couldn’t offer the agility or the security we required. We chose Rubrik Security Cloud because it was built to secure our data in this new era,” added Pagano.

DEPLOYING RUBRIK FOR CYBER RESILIENCE AND DATA SECURITY

Berkeley College implemented Rubrik across its main and colocation data centers, utilizing Rubrik’s comprehensive suite for virtualized and physical environments, including disaster recovery, data replication, cloud archival, and test/dev. Key benefits include:

  • Instant data recovery during cyber threats: “In the event of a cyberattack, Rubrik enables us to restore critical data within minutes.”

  • Seamless cloud integration with Microsoft Azure: “Rubrik’s secure cloud mobility allowed us to eliminate tape, seamlessly integrate with Azure, and enhance our data security strategy while reducing costs.”

  • Optimized performance with Pure Storage: “Combining Pure’s all-flash array with Rubrik has delivered unmatched performance, ensuring seamless protection for our next-gen applications.”

  • Resilience for physical SQL environments: “Rubrik’s point-in-time restore for Microsoft SQL has simplified and stabilized our operations.”

  • 33% reduction in TCO: “By consolidating multiple tools into Rubrik’s unified platform, we improved storage efficiency, reduced hardware needs, and freed up resources.”
