Rubrik is thrilled to be recognized in the top 10 of the 2020 Forbes Cloud 100 alongside innovative, future-forward companies such as Stripe and the newly-public SnowflakeThe Forbes Cloud 100 list, compiled with Bessemer Venture Partner and Salesforce Ventures, is “the definitive ranking of the top 100 private cloud companies in the world” based on rigorous evaluation in the areas of leadership, valuation, operating metrics, and people and culture.

This year marks the fourth year that Rubrik has placed on the Forbes Cloud 100 list (the second in the top 10). I have to admit, this year feels particularly exciting as the cloud becomes even more essential to today’s business operations. Who isn’t remote in some capacity, if not completely? We are a bit obsessed with what our customers need, and the move to cloud is a big one. We are ready for the challenge. And here’s why…

Automate and Orchestrate Data Management

Customers have long felt the pain of legacy data management. They were lost in a sea of backup jobs, missing SLA recovery windows, and a myriad of hardware and software solutions for managing and protecting their data. Rubik changed the game with a consumer-like experience through a powerful backup workflow engine. Now, users can collapse hundreds of backup jobs into 5 simple sliders. As environments scale, Rubrik takes all the work out for backup admins by automatically discovering and applying policies, giving the backup teams superpowers to do more with less.

From the beginning, Rubrik was designed to be API-first. Users can enable self-service data protection and recovery, provision and manage resources using infrastructure as code methodologies, and monitor Rubrik with the monitoring tools you already know and love. Customers can deliver new, automated services across any topology, a previously impossible feat.

We designed the platform to be “app aware,” which means we understand who has accessed the data, what type of data it is, and how old the data is. This metadata index gives us the power to make it extremely simple and fast for customers to search for and recover data anywhere. It also allows us to build powerful ML-driven apps, that use these data insights for managing risk, and identifying ransomware patterns.

Take Advantage of Cloud Economics and Scale

For years, the cloud hasn’t been a matter of if  but when. Cloud is quickly becoming a backbone of the modern backup architecture. The pandemic has pushed the need for cloud now to enable productivity and collaboration with distributed, global workforces. In a recent survey by MariaDB, 40% of respondents claimed that COVID-19 has sped up their move to the cloud, and over 38% responded that “being 100% on the cloud” is one of the most important technological changes their organization faces. It’s likely that even after the pandemic ends, remote work is here to stay, as companies such as Twitter and Square are allowing employees to work from home indefinitely.

Our customers are all on a journey to the cloud, they are looking to Rubrik to do three things: make it easy to archive to lower cost long term storage to the cloud; lift and shift their existing applications onto the cloud to accelerate their move away from on-premises infrastructure; and build new applications in the cloud to make sure they are protected.

So let’s take a look at archiving. Using the same simple workflow engine, from day one, we made it easy for customers to set an archiving objective and tell us which cloud service they want to use (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud)–we take it from there. Now, we have added smart automatic tiering of the data by timestamp, pointing it to the lowest-cost storage by data type in the cloud.

Whether customers are lifting-and-shifting their workloads to the cloud, building new applications that leverage native cloud services, or protecting Microsoft 365, they need enterprise class data protection. Rubrik delivers the same SLA policy management, instant file and table level granular recovery, and simple experience that that had for managing their on-premises environment, all visible in one console. So, one place to manage and monitor it all.  In the words of David Coffman, Director of Enterprise Infrastructure at Meredith Corporation, “Rubrik is our unified system of record. It gives us a simple, bird’s-eye view of all of our four sites and allows us to centrally manage our infrastructure by giving us insight into potential short-term capacity issues.”

A Growing Ransomware Threat

While the cloud makes collaborative remote work possible, it also gives hackers a larger surface area for malicious activity. Don’t just take our word for it. According to McAfee’s Cloud Adoption and Risk Report : Work From Home Editionwhich pulled data from 30 million MCVISION Cloud users between January and April 2020, security threats skyrocketed with external attacks on cloud accounts increasing over 600%.

You’ve heard us say it before: backups are a critical defense, but ransomware strains are getting increasingly sophisticated and can even exfiltrate your backup data, ruining your last line of defense.

Rubrik addresses these challenges head on with native immutability (meaning your backups can never be tampered with or deleted), anomaly detection, and accelerated recovery across on-prem and cloud environments. Customers such as Kern Medical Center and the City of Durham have avoided paying ransom by swiftly recovering from ransomware attacks with Rubrik. Giving customers peace of mind is what we build for.
