The Time is Now for Zero Trust Data Securityᵀᴹ
Ransomware threats are getting increasingly more sophisticated and are now going straight for backup data, which can be debilitating for recovery after a cyberattack. This in turn requires that backup data be inherently secure so attackers can’t hold data hostage. Successful ransomware recovery requires a new approach for security strategies. If data is the primary target, then security measures must begin with data.
You’ve seen the headlines, traditional IT security defenses are failing. Gartner projects that “By 2025, at least 75% of IT organizations will face one or more attacks, as free-rein researchers document a dramatic increase in ransomware attacks during 2020, pointing to sevenfold or higher rates of growth.” Attackers are getting through the firewalls and anti-virus products. This breakdown of perimeter security measures is driving a Zero Trust approach to cybersecurity. A Zero Trust architecture assumes all users, devices, and applications are untrustworthy. Trust nothing. Verify everything.
Rubrik adheres to the model defined by the National Institute of Standards (NIST), which is defined by the NIST SP 800-207 Zero Trust Architecture Specification. According to NIST, Zero Trust comprises “an evolving set of cybersecurity paradigms that move defenses from static, network-based perimeters to focus on users, assets, and resources.”
Rubrik Zero Trust Data Security™ is an architecture that is modeled after the Zero Trust Implementation Model from NIST. At the core of Rubrik Zero Trust is Rubrik DataGuardian™, which supports a purpose-built file system that never exposes backup data via open network protocols. This creates a logical airgap that blocks data from being discoverable or accessible over the network. Meaning when data is written to the Rubrik system, it cannot be modified, deleted, or encrypted by an attack, which ensures that a clean copy of data is always available for recovery.
