About the team

The Polaris Platform Bangalore team (a.k.a. Legion team) at Rubrik provides the core platforms and systems that enable product engineers to efficiently build and operate scalable and reliable applications in
the cloud and also the on-prem version of the control plane. Polaris Platform has a horizontal charter with our customers being both external customers as well as Rubrik internal teams.
Presently, the Legion team is working on enabling product led trials, license management & enforcement, making its cloud deployment infrastructure more efficient. Legion team also owns the on-prem RSC (RSC-P) version and is currently working on supporting it on different deployments, while ensuring it scales and is performant like its cloud counterpart.

About the role

As a database engineer on the RSC Platform Engineering team, you’ll own the fundamental database infrastructure components that all other Rubrik Security Cloud product teams at Rubrik build upon. You’ll own database architecture for both online and analytics/offline use cases. This role requires strong SQL expertise including schema design and performance tuning. This is an exciting time to join as we are constantly innovating on scaling and operating our foundational services to support product growth. 

With your technical expertise, you design, implement and improve processes, procedures and automation for all database-centric areas. You also test the systems in place and interface with external groups. 

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement and maintain relational database systems for performance and reliability 
  • Ensure we maintain high availability and durability of Rubrik databases 
  • Own and evolve the data model for various Rubrik cloud product lines 
  • Understand the OLTP and OLAP needs - Design and work on implementing the suitable database architecture
  • Establish best practices for internal teams for efficient database usage (E.g. Write performant SQL queries)
  • Tune and configure our databases as well as build tools and scripts to monitor, troubleshoot, and automate our systems 
  • Propose test plans, interface with external groups, developers and application owners to arrive at optimal solutions 
  • Perform periodic database upgrades minimizing downtime for our customers 
  • Design and enhance disaster recovery and backup procedures for the Database systems and RSC Platform.

Responsibilities 

  • Design and implement scalable, high-performance database schemas/ improvements for different workloads, create comprehensive data models, and establish architecture standards and best practices across the organization
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on efficient data access patterns, implement security and disaster recovery strategies, and provide database design guidance through code reviews and technical consultation
  • Monitor, analyze, and optimize database performance through indexing strategies, query optimization, capacity planning, and troubleshooting complex performance issues across multiple environments
  • Identify customer pain-points proactively, and help improve customer experience through software enhancements, tools, documentation, guidelines, and more 
  • Recommend best practices like query tuning, schema design, instance sizing, flag settings, extensions, and the likes. Help customers perform experiments and scale with different settings to tune instances for their workload 
  • Perform capacity planning, scaling strategies on production databases to support projected growth

Experience & preferred qualifications you’ll need

  • 3-8 years of experience designing and managing relational databases with a focus on performance, security, scalability, reliability, high-availability, and disaster recovery 
  • Experience working with high traffic OLTP databases, preferably MySQL
  • Experience working with OLAP databases such as BigQuery
  • Experience with scripting and automation using languages such as Go/Scala/Python/Java. 
  • Exceptionally Strong in Performance Tuning - Database configurations and SQL, identifying observability metrics on databases.
  • Experience with backend development and distributed systems, exposure to Micro services based architecture is preferred.
  • Experience operating mission-critical database applications in on-premise, cloud or in hybrid cloud environments. Experience with at least one of the public clouds - GCP/AWS/Azure is preferred.
  • Extreme curiosity to understand database intrinsics, root cause complex problems and great communication skills.

You will hold in confidence and will not possess or use (except as required to evaluate the proposed business relationship) or disclose any Confidential Information except information you can document which (i) is in the public domain through no fault of yours, (ii) was properly known to you, without restriction, prior to disclosure by Company or (iii) was properly disclosed to you by another person without restriction. Miscellaneous.  The terms of this Agreement will remain in effect with respect to any particular Confidential Information until you can document that such Confidential Information falls into one of the exceptions stated in Section 2 above.  You acknowledge and agree that due to the unique nature of the Confidential Information, any breach of this Agreement would cause irreparable harm to Company for which damages are not an adequate remedy, and that Company shall therefore be entitled to equitable relief in addition to all other remedies available at law.  This Agreement is personal to you, nonassignable by you, governed by the internal laws of the State of California and may be modified or waived only in writing signed by both parties.  If any provision of this Agreement is found to be unenforceable, such provision will be limited or deleted to the minimum extent necessary so that the remaining terms remain in full force and effect.  The prevailing party in any dispute or legal action regarding the subject matter of this Agreement shall be entitled to recover attorneys’ fees and costs.
