SLACIP: Tightening the Grip on Cyber Security Controls
In April 2022, the Security Legislation Amendment (Critical Infrastructure Protection) Act 2022 (SLACIP Act) expanded the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 (SOCI) to provide a framework for managing risks relating to critical infrastructure in Australia. This is also a framework to improve preparedness and resilience for critical infrastructure assets. The Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2022 framework includes enhanced cyber security obligations. These elements will improve the preparedness of Australia’s most important critical infrastructure assets to manage and mitigate the range of hazards that could otherwise have a serious impact on the delivery of their essential service.
As an expansion of SOCI, the SLACIP Act introduces new key features into the critical infrastructure framework:
The Enhanced Cyber Security Obligations Framework (ECSO), a new amendment to the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018, is the latest in a row of cyber security specific to Systems of National Significance (SONS) deemed part of a nation’s critical infrastructure
This new framework is a concise, converged set of controls that allow organisations to achieve comprehensive cyber resilience and data management in key areas to help them defend against cyber threats effectively—and quickly revert back to operational efficiencies when a major cyber incident occurs.
