JELD-WEN Shuts the Window on Cyberthreats with Rubrik

With operating facilities in 15 countries in North America and Europe, 18,000 employees, and over 25 million windows and doors sold annually, the multi-billion-dollar company’s brilliant and sustainable designs bring beauty and security to all the projects they touch, from building solar-powered homes to earthquake-resilient homes.

Stephen Morris, Sr. Manager of IT Architecture and Engineering at JELD-WEN, and his team manage the IT infrastructure driving the entirety of JELD-WEN operations, including networking, computing, and key systems for ERP, CRM, supply chain, manufacturing, and financial management. If any of these systems were to go down, the impact on business continuity would be immediate and potentially devastating, halting production lines, disrupting supply chains, and impairing financial transactions. Decades of acquisitions created a complex mosaic of on-premises and cloud technology, including multiple backup systems.

The catalyst for looking at Rubrik was to protect JELD-WEN’s M365 data. Once they saw the power and simplicity of Rubrik for M365 protection in the cloud, that led to the natural evolution of consolidating all workloads into a single Enterprise-ready solution. “Rubrik was the clear choice for JELD-WEN. What stood out amongst competitors, in addition to M365 protection, was its strategic partnership with Microsoft and its cyber resilient roadmap,” said Morris.

Solutions

PERFECT FIT FOR EFFICIENT CLOUD-NATIVE PROTECTION

With a cloud-first strategy, JELD-WEN initially used Azure Backup to protect their data as they migrated workloads to the cloud—a common transition strategy. However, they soon encountered a few challenges.

Firstly, Azure Backup didn’t allow for a uniform, single view of all their data across all their data sources. JELD-WEN still had significant data on-premises, along with M365, and they didn’t want to rely on multiple, disparate solutions to manage and secure their diverse data landscape. Second, they wanted a solution that had robust cyber resilience capabilities–being able to monitor for and quickly detect threats and quickly recover. Finally, they were running into issues around the high costs of storing large amounts of backup data on hot storage tiers.

Within six months, JELD-WEN went live with Rubrik Cloud-Native Protection for its Microsoft Azure and M365 environments, dropping maintenance and eliminating tape storage. “Now we use cloud storage the way that we should, saving roughly 50% of the cost. The move also facilitated stronger data governance and visibility,” says Morris.

JELD-WEN’s implementation of Rubrik enhanced their cyber resilience and operational efficiency.
