Simplifying AWS Native Protection with Rubrik Polaris

Why Polaris for AWS? Last year, Rubrik introduced the world to Polaris, our innovative SaaS offering for a new breed of data management apps. Our first Polaris app was Polaris GPS, which provides customers with centralized management and monitoring of their globally-distributed Rubrik infrastructure. We quickly followed that up with our second application, Polaris Radar, which leverages machine learning to help customers detect and recover from ransomware. However, with organizations driving cloud adoption more and more, we always knew protecting workloads running in the cloud would be a key focus of Polaris. We spearheaded these efforts with Office 365 protection in our Andes release. This was just the beginning, and I’m happy to announce that Rubrik has now released native protection for Amazon Web Service (AWS) workloads using Polaris. Building on the capabilities of our flagship Cloud Data Management (CDM) product, Polaris integrates with the native snapshot capabilities and APIs provided by AWS for protecting Amazon EC2 instances and Amazon EBS volumes. This tight integration provides Rubrik customers with a central point of management to address various data protection use cases. Why should customers use Polaris to protect Amazon EC2 and Amazon EBS? As a SaaS solution, Polaris provides many…

Protecting Encrypted Amazon EBS Volumes with Rubrik

Encrypting your data has moved from being a “nice-to-have” to a mandatory procedure when creating or storing data on-premises or in the cloud. Cloud providers have generally taken the lead in making encryption a simple-to-use service on their platform. One example is Amazon Web Services (AWS), who offers users the ability to encrypt data in transit and at rest with many of their services, including Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), Amazon Elastic File Service (EFS), and Amazon Elastic Block Storage (EBS). Rubrik has integrated with AWS encryption services from its inception, beginning with Amazon S3 and Rubrik CloudOut, and now including Amazon EBS snapshots. This integration provides not only the ability to encrypt data that Rubrik manages in AWS, but also key management through the AWS Key Management Service (KMS) and customer-deployed key management systems. These integrations give our joint customers the flexibility to control their encryption keys seamlessly while using Rubrik for data management in AWS. I’ve been writing about how Rubrik helps customer with protecting their Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances using Amazon EBS and Amazon Machine Images (AMI). The earlier blog posts in this series can be found here: Your Primer on Amazon EC2 Protection Amazon…

Tech Walkthrough: Amazon EC2 Protection with Rubrik

In a previous post, I previewed Rubrik’s support for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) native protection, and it’s been rewarding seeing customers use this capability to protect their AWS workloads. With the exciting announcements recently revealed at AWS re:Invent, this is a good time to walk through some of Rubrik’s Amazon EC2 protection capabilities. Prerequisites First thing you’ll need is an AWS account with some Amazon EC2 instances launched and running in one or more AWS Regions. Note that these instances must be using Amazon Elastic Block Storage (EBS) volumes since Rubrik will be leveraging Amazon EBS snapshots for data protection. On the Rubrik side, you’ll need either a Rubrik instance running on-premises with network connectivity to AWS or a Rubrik Cloud Cluster with access to your AWS account. There is also some preliminary configuration work, detailed in Rubrik documentation, that has to be completed before we can start managing native Amazon EC2 protection: Identify a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and Subnet where the transient Rubirk EC2 instance will be launched. This Rubrik instance will be used for the indexing of Amazon EBS snapshots. Create a Security Group that allows inbound access over TCP through ports 2002 and 7780. This…

NoSQL Replication Is Not Backup

As we kick off 2019, I wanted to reflect back on a trend that has continued to gain momentum over the past few years–the march towards cloud-native applications that rely on highly-distributed and non-relational NoSQL databases. Our industry increasingly relies on architectures that embrace scale-out, highly-distributed systems. From small startups designing entirely in the cloud to large enterprises developing net new customer facing applications, the move to NoSQL databases has increased across the globe. While cloud-native architectures and, in particular, NoSQL databases solve problems such as resiliency from hardware failures and geographic distribution, they also amplify a few common pitfalls. One of the biggest challenges is that because NoSQL databases have done such an excellent job with native database replication, many organizations are fooled into a false sense of protection. The irony here is that by solving one major problem, many others now lurk in the background, leaving critical customer data at risk. As organizations continue to deploy production applications on NoSQL databases, it’s nearly inevitable that the data will become unavailable or corrupted. What happens in the event of a virus attack, data corruption, or a simple human error such as an admin dropping a table? If the only…

Introducing Rubrik Protection for Epic EHR

How confident are you in your Epic EHR data backups? Here at Rubrik, we understand that our healthcare customers rely on their electronic healthcare record (EHR) system for real-time access to patient health data. Any downtime of this mission-critical system would jeopardize the quality of patient care and risk non-compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory requirements. Unfortunately, legacy backup solutions are increasingly stretched by the explosive growth of healthcare data and rising intensity of ransomware and malware attacks. Protecting large EHR systems is difficult, with slow backup and recovery performance potentially compromising patient data availability. Without proper security, backups of production data are equally vulnerable to ransomware attacks. And on top of these security risks, legacy backup systems are complex and require significant management time, often from dedicated specialists. With Andes 5.0, Rubrik addresses these pain points by extending its policy-driven data protection to both physical and virtualized Epic EHR systems. Here are a few of the key differentiators that set Rubrik apart: High-performance backups. Rubrik Cloud Data Management (CDM) accelerates Epic backups with parallel ingestion and an incremental-forever approach, with no impact on the Epic production system. SLA policy-driven automation. Through a single policy engine, backup administrators create and…

Adcubum Chooses Rubrik for Fast Recovery and Cloud Mobility

Located in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Adcubum is the country’s market leader in health and accident insurance, as well as an active player in the property insurance market. The standard software, adcubum SYRIUS, covers the entire value chain of the insurance industry. Insurance companies use adcubum SYRIUS for the rapid implementation of digitization projects, as well as for the replacement of legacy systems. We recently spoke to Patrik Fürer, IT Product Services, about his team’s experience with Rubrik. What is the role of IT within Adcubum? We see ourselves as the leader in ‘digital insurance’ and work everyday to help our customers be the best in their industry. As a software development company, IT belongs to the core of our business. It’s our job to provide a secure, agile environment for our developers, which means adopting the right solutions like Rubrik. What challenges were you previously experiencing with data management? Prior to Rubrik, we employed a tape-based legacy data management solution, which was complex and labor-intensive. Our previous solution demanded expertise that was limited to one team member who spent a considerable amount of time monitoring tape usage and replacing worn media. Upgrading backup client software was also a major drain…

Providing Cost-effective NAS Protection for Enterprise Customers via NAS Direct Archive

Given the recent digital explosion, the size of our customers’ NAS environments has drastically increased. A big reason for this is the relative ease with which companies can deploy, manage, and scale NAS storage systems. As more and more critical data makes their way to NAS systems (e.g., medical images, design files, and sensitive documents), enterprises are increasing their focus on NAS protection. Rubrik is a one-stop shop for enterprise data protection, and a large component of this protection is NAS.
