Cloud Data Management Gets Edge-ier

Two months ago, we announced the Early Access program for Rubrik Firefly, a major release that extended data management from virtual to physical workloads, across clouds, and to edge environments. Rubrik Edge, a software appliance built for remote and branch offices (ROBO), now stretches Cloud Data Management capabilities—like automated backup, replication to headquarters, cloud archival—to the far-flung corners of our customers’ businesses. While lightweight in form factor, Edge represents a significant step towards our vision of a single, software fabric that spans across clouds, is packed with rich data services, and delivers “applications” across the entire data lifecycle. Edge quickly deploys as a software appliance within a virtualized environment. It’s easy to manage, using the same consumer-grade HTML5-based interface that powers our r300/r500 appliance series. If a VM fails or a file is lost, you can deliver quick recoveries expedited by our global real-time search. Furthermore, we incorporate capabilities to save you time and money: Policy-based Management: Quickly assign SLA policies to your VMs with just a click. Create your own SLA policies by selecting desired snapshot capture frequency, retention duration, and data policy (store on-site, to a central site, or in the cloud). It takes just a simple swipe to…

Next-Gen Backup at Wabash National, North America’s Leading Semi-Trailer Producer

This week, I chat with Steve Bunch, Server and Storage Manager at Wabash National, on how next-gen backup helps Wabash in its quest to keep America’s leading fleets operating efficiently. Tell me about your role at Wabash and how you landed there.   I’ve been working at Wabash for 12 years, right out of college. I started answering phones with the Tier 1 support team, worked my way up the chain, and left to get some server, backup, and virtualization experience. I received a call from Wabash with an offer to re-join as a server admin. The company was  starting to diversify and acquisitions were a part of the strategy, which meant plenty of help was needed to standardize data center environments. The team grew from 3 to 14 people, and I was promoted to Server/Storage Manager, handling everything from servers, storage, virtualization, and business critical applications. What type of backup challenges were you experiencing? Our company is active in M&A activity, which means we acquire lots of different data centers and IT stacks. It wasn’t until I brought in a backup administrator to streamline our multiple backup solutions and firmware upgrade process that I realized how challenging backup was!…

3 Things to Know About Rubrik and Cloudian

Zero Setup, Instant Access, and Lower TCO With Rubrik, your data is always “on” even when it’s tucked away in an archive tier, such as public cloud storage, on-site object stores, and NFS. We’re excited to team up with Cloudian, provider of Amazon S3-compatible on-site object storage. Cloudian offers HyperStore, software that transforms commodity servers into scalable and fault tolerant object stores. Together, Rubrik and Cloudian simplify how enterprises manage backup and long-term data retention in hybrid cloud environments. A backup and archival strategy that stands strong in the face of unstoppable data growth and external/internal compliance regulations requires instant data accessibility, ease of scale, dead simple management, and economics that don’t break the company piggy bank. As you evaluate options to modernize backup and archival, here are three key things to know about Rubrik and Cloudian. Get started quickly. There’s no additional software installations or plugins necessary to connect Rubrik with Cloudian. Just set your target archival location to Cloudian. Define your archival policy in the same place where you define your backup policy. Move a slider to determine when data should be archived off the Brik (Rubrik appliance) and off you go. Get instant, intelligent access to data.…

Cloud is the New Tape

A few weeks ago, I paid a visit to Terry Young, the man behind the scenes that keeps infrastructure running at Castilleja School. We met in November to discuss how Castilleja used Rubrik to solve recovery challenges and re-purpose backup data for testing. This time, our conversation focused on how Castilleja has been using Rubrik to archive data to AWS S3. As a result, Terry has wiped out tape management complexity and created a disaster recovery insurance plan for Castilleja. Mapping Business Objectives to Cloud Services In order to smoothly transition to public cloud, Terry segmented workloads by size, criticality of data, and recovery time objectives. RTOs differ when you’re recovering 4TB from the Brik vs. from the cloud. In addition, Terry defined a new retention policy – everything was kept on-premises for 3 days and anything beyond 3-5 days was archived to the cloud. Archiving starts at midnight to 6 am to not coincide with business hours. Significant Time Savings from Easy Recoveries As Chris mentioned in Part 1, the challenge of public cloud is ensuring that data can be pulled down into an on-premises location without breaking the bank and recovery time/point objectives. This is where Rubrik works…

Leeward Business Advisors Drives Competitive Advantage with Rubrik

Jason Klein, CTO at Leeward Business Advisors, spends his time hunting for the latest disruptive enterprise technology to transform business outcomes. An IT architect trained in economics, he’s racked up almost two decades of enterprise tech experience. Tell me about Leeward Business Advisors and how it differentiates from other service providers? We’re a Midwest managed service provider that delivers CTO/CIO-level consulting services for all types of organizations, from non-profits with 5-10 users to departments within large, Fortune 100 customers.  We take a business-centric approach that focuses on aligning business leadership with technology leadership. We accomplish this by engaging C-level executives to help prioritize business initiatives and outcomes that can be translated to the technology teams. We then offer services that accelerate those outcomes. How were you solving the data protection challenge prior to Rubrik? Our previous vendor didn’t provide us with any competitive advantage. The product works fine but didn’t fit into our overall service provider approach. We were looking for webscale solutions that could deliver linear scalability and mitigate single points of failure. We ended up hitting some performance and scalability issues with our previous solution. I’ve seen customers switch from X to Y to Z, trying to find…

ExponentHR Goes Forward with a Simpler, Easier DR Strategy

Misha Vyazmensky, CTO, and Chris Gurley, Sr. Network Engineer, explain how Rubrik helped ExponentHR move forward in its DR strategy. What does ExponentHR do? Misha: Since 2001, we’ve been a leading human resource information systems SaaS platform. We help businesses (100 to 10,000+ employees) drive smarter decision-making, from running payroll to accessing vast amounts of data for financial analysis to managing employee benefit plans in light of recent legislative changes like ObamaCare. Why were you investigating a new solution for backup and replication? Misha: We have a team of 4 employees. We’re a small group supporting an enterprise-level business so we place a high emphasis on technologies that deliver simplicity and ease of management. Chris: Before, we were using a virtualization-centric backup solution that had replication capabilities to deliver off-site availability. When it worked, it was fine. When it didn’t work, it was rocket science to root cause the issue. Restores were also click-intensive and time consuming – it took a hundred clicks and 30 minutes to start restore for just 50 VMs. Why Rubrik? Chris: We were two days away from signing paperwork to expand our existing backup system when I saw Duncan Epping’s post on Rubrik. We had…

Rubrik Helps RFA Deliver Archival-as-a-Service

Grigoriy Milis is the CTO at RFA (Richard Fleischman & Associates) and a 16-year IT veteran with more than 15 years of experience working in the financial industry. What differentiates RFA from other Managed Service Providers? We specialize in providing global data center services to the financial services industry, such as hedge funds and private equity funds. RFA is headquartered in New York City but we operate in New York, Connecticut, Boston, and London. We do a substantial amount of research in the market to stay on top of the latest technology trends that can help our clients. We’ve established a good track record of partnering up with startup companies to help them shape their product roadmap early on. Many of these companies have now become major players in IT markets like security. What drove the initial interest in Rubrik? We actually were very skeptical of evaluating a backup solution given the maturity of the backup market. Backup is an old problem and existing solutions, from decades ago and more recently, are pretty similar across the board. What caught my attention was Rubrik’s public cloud archival capabilities combined with global deduplication. It’s a huge differentiator for Rubrik since everybody integrates…

Learning Uptime at Castilleja with Rubrik

Terry Young, Senior Network and Systems Administrator, talks about using Rubrik to overcome the hidden costs in other backup software and easing into cloud services for long-term data retention. Tell me about your role at Castilleja. I’m the Sr. Network and Systems Administrator at Castilleja, and am responsible for anything technology-related to infrastructure. Network, servers, storage, backup. I previously worked down the street at Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD). What challenges have you faced working in academia? What I’ve found challenging with IT environments in academia is the lack of a holistic approach in building out the environment to address the needs. Solutions are tacked on over time without a general framework in mind, resulting in a hodgepodge configuration. At Castilleja, after experiencing two application outages, we started looking for a separate, easy to use, single backup solution stack that has the ability to restore and run on its own stack (without re-hydrating on primary storage and loss of performance), support multi-purpose use cases beyond recovery such as staging and test/dev, and be cost-effective. Prior to Rubrik, our backup software required re-hydration on the primary storage due to performance issues. I had to reserve x-amount of space on our…
