Last year, I wrote a blog post about the Rubrik Partner Tech Champions Program which equips our technology partners with specialized, hands-on, practical knowledge tailored to meet market demands and drive tangible success.
This year, I have a number for you: 100.
That is how many partner engineers have now stood in front of a panel of Rubrik leaders, defended a real customer solution for an hour, and passed.
Every one of them got there the same way. They designed a Rubrik solution for a real case, presented it, fielded questions from experts, and were scored across ten dimensions by people who did not coach them.
This is how you earn a Rubrik Black Belt.
The Bar Does Not Move
A Black Belt earned in Kiel means the same thing as one earned in Denver. Four things make sure that’s possible:
Same curriculum for everyone: Every candidate completes all four data estate modules: Identity, Cloud, SaaS and Enterprise. Nobody skips one because their practice only sells a single workload.
A floor nobody gets under: Every candidate earns all four Rubrik Resilience Architect certifications before reaching the panel. The Black Belt sits on top of those four, so the technical floor is identical for everyone.
A real coach: Every candidate is assigned a Rubrik Sensei and spends about four weeks in prep with that Sensei and their Rubrik GPO SE.
A panel with no conflicts: The Sensei who coached you and the GPO SE who ran your prep cannot sit on your validation panel. The people who helped you are not the people who grade you.
That last rule is the whole reason this certification means something. Nobody is grading their own work.
Partners: “This is Challenging and Rewarding”
That is the endorsement that matters most.
One partner director wrote to his own team the day his engineer passed: we know this Black Belt is not easy.
“It is a unique and rewarding experience that goes far beyond simply selecting the correct answers from a checklist,” said a newly certified engineer in Germany. “Instead, it challenges and validates one's capabilities, experience, and deep understanding in a very meaningful way.”
Some candidates come in to validate years of experience. Others use it to go deep on Identity or Cloud for the first time. Both groups end up at the same panel. Partner engineers who carry a lot of vendor badges keep telling us this is the one that took real work.
Every Black Belt Has a Sensei
Nobody is assigned to be a Sensei: they volunteer. More than 50 Rubrik sales engineers have served as Sensei, and almost all of them sit outside the global partner engineering org. They are field SEs carrying their own account load who give four weeks of coaching to a certification that does not appear anywhere on their own scorecard.
One newly minted Black Belt in the Americas had kind words to say about his Sensei.
“He was always generous with his time, knowledge, and guidance," the new Black Belt reported. "I couldn't have asked for a better coach through the program.”
You may take a course for the content, but you need a Sensei to achieve mastery.
Where is My Black Belt Ring?
Every Black Belt gets a kit, and inside the kit is a ring.
It started as a small idea. It is now the most requested item in the program. That same engineer in Germany signed off his email with one more line:
“Just one question. Where is my ring?”
A shipping delay in EMEA turned into a running email thread. One of our GPO SE leaders summed it up: the ring is the talk of the town.

What’s Next?
The map keeps filling in. We added our first Middle East Black Belt in July and our first Qatari Black Belt in September.
In December, a new designation opens up for Black Belts. It is called Grandmaster. It is earned annually and has to be re-earned every year, so it is a status you hold rather than a badge you keep. Watch your inbox.
Start at White Belt on the Rubrik Learning Portal. It is self-paced and takes an afternoon. Green Belt follows. When you are ready for the Black Belt, tell your Rubrik GPO SE and we will assign you a Sensei.
