Encrypting Your Data in the Cloud, Part 1: Why It Matters

Data Breaches Are Trending While IT security in 2018 has been dominated with news about CPU vulnerabilities, we may very well look back on 2017 as the year of online data breaches and cloud data leaks. From stolen consumer data due to unpatched vulnerabilities to sensitive data leaks due to misconfigured cloud storage buckets, it seems that no one’s data was safe in 2017. For a number of reasons, this is a trend that is likely to continue in 2018 and beyond: The inexorable move from analog to digital means more and more of our data is being stored on computers and websites that are targets for hackers. For example, the Equifax breach impacted 145 million consumers who had personal information stolen. A greater percentage of company employees work remotely using a wide range of devices from desktops to smartphones. This expands the threat landscape and gives malicious actors more ways to compromise valuable data. The growth of the public cloud means that increasingly more data is being stored outside of company data centers in repositories that are accessible via public endpoints. This move to the cloud requires knowledge and skill sets that are still in short supply, leading to…

Focusing on our Strengths: Rubrik & QStar

Tape?! Yes, tape. Rubrik has long supported native cloud integration for long-term archive for similar economics to tape with more flexibility and reliability. But for some customers, archiving to tape is an unavoidable legal or compliance requirement. This is particularly the case for customers across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia in finance, energy, defense, media, and more. As we listened to our customers, we discovered that they needed tape support but also wanted many more “forward-looking” features — additional cloud capabilities, data portability, analytics, and more. However, in some ways, development is a zero-sum game; time spent on one feature by definition is not available for other features. When you look at tape support, it’s not simple due to a multiplicity of tape libraries, drives, and related drivers – tape has been around for 30+ years after all. To solve this conundrum, Rubrik partnered with a company that has made handling tape drives and tape libraries a competitive strength – QStar. Starting with version 4.0 and later, Rubrik natively integrates with QStar Archive Manager to provide tape archiving. QStar exposes a tape library via SMB from a Windows server, handles the proprietary drivers required to interface with tape libraries, and…

Designed for Security: Introducing Software Encryption at Rest

There’s been a lot of buzz around the recent launch of version 3.1 of Rubrik Cloud Data Management. As our 7th product release, this version introduces a variety of rich new features to our platform that help make data management even more comprehensive. In previous posts, we discussed Rubrik Envision, which delivers visual data for platform analytics, and support for physical Windows servers. Version 3.1 also bolsters our security capabilities by adding software encryption for data at rest. The update is available on the r300 appliances, which ship with a built-in Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip. Rubrik already supports hardware-based encryption on r528 appliances. So, now customers can enable data-at-rest encryption across Rubrik appliances, as well as role-based access control, to protect their data. Here are some of the key benefits our software encryption feature delivers: Comprehensive Protection We use AES 256-bit encryption to protect all of the data associated with your Rubrik cluster. We encrypt all files in Atlas, Rubrik’s cloud-scale file system. In addition, metadata, logs, and generated stats are encrypted. Simplicity Software encryption for data at rest is supported for the r300 appliance series. It is easily enabled at bootstrap and requires no user intervention thereafter. It…

Meet the r599 BC: Bringing Backup Back

Rubrik is proud to announce our latest product, the all new r599 BC. r599 BC does one job and does it best: archival to papyrus. “Backup is dead,” they said. “Even the dead need backup!” we believe. During our beta testing, the most crucial piece of feedback we received was from Mr. Tutankhamun, C.I.O., Pharaohmatix Inc. “We deal with sensitive data, and we need encryption, not just backup,” he said. Enter r599 BC: papyrus archival with encryption using hieroglyphs. r599 BC is the world’s first converged data management platform with state-of-art ancient encryption built right into it. What’s more, there’s no master key we can forge to break the encryption. That means you own your data. Now. Always. The customer testimonials are flying in, and they all agree: r599 BC is light-years ahead of its time. “You guys made backup sexy again.” “Rock solid backup!” “Now I can backup all of Cleopatra’s selfies without worrying!” It’s product of the century. With r599 BC, data security will never be the same again. The government can not have and will never have access to your data.
